The goal of this work was to reexamine previously published (1) brain spectroscopy data of abnormal metabolite ratios in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Toward this goal, (1)H MR spectroscopic imaging data from 10 ALS and nine control subjects were reanalyzed using improved data analysis techniques, including automated curve fitting and tissue-volume correction. We present the MRI and 1H MR spectroscopy findings in six patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and asymptomatic focal brain lesions. Variations in imaging appearances were seen, including regression of a previously identified lesion. MR spectra for the lesions and corresponding areas of normal brain show significant differences. Nitric oxide (NO) is a free radical produced during inflammation following activation of an inducible NO synthase by pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1beta. Exogenous nitric oxide was found to modify the pattern of cytokine secretion from human leukocytes, with similar outcome in 11 different healthy blood donors. In a cultured human hepatoblastoma cell line, Hep G2, chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) induced LDL receptor mRNA levels approximately 4 fold and mRNA levels for HMG-CoA reductase and HMG-CoA synthase two fold. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are associated with significant upper gastrointestinal (GI) toxicity, with a relative risk of approximately 3. This is supported by evidence drawn from randomised controlled trials [of aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid)], cohort studies and case-control studies. The risk is increased with higher doses of medication, shorter treatment duration and concomitant corticosteroid use. Elderly patients and those with a history of GI illness are also at increased risk. Ibuprofen may be associated with a lower, and piroxicam with a higher, risk of complications.

Variability in individual responses to drugs used to treat rheumatoid arthritis was studied in 532 patients under care in seven U.S. rheumatology private practices.
