Four different muscle relaxants were compared as to their effects on tonic Ascaris suum muscle to: physiological activity, intracellular response to regulatory light chain phosphorylation, and receptor pharmacology. Perfusion of Ascaris suum muscle with each relaxant, gamma-aminobutyric acid, avermectin, piperazine and chlorpromazine resulted in a dose-dependent loss of muscle tone. Comparison of intracellular effects indicated that gamma-aminobutyric acid and avermectin perfusion initiated an increase in the levels of dephosphorylated regulatory light chain while piperazine increased first si

Ficus glabrata latex has been a well-known anthelminthic remedy in the neotropical regions since ancient times. The latex has been commercially exploited for decades because of its content of the proteolytic enzyme-complex ficin. A safe dosage regimen with direct use of the latex has been elucidated to control intestinal helminthiasis in the Indian and non-Indian rural population. Helminthiasis was common in three Amazonian villages, field bases for the clinical study, with an overall prevalence of 92%. Specific prevalences were: Ascaris 68%, Strongyloides 42%, Trichuris 41%, Ancylostoma/Necat

Ivermectin has been tested against the microfilariae of Onchocerca lienalis, Brugia pahangi and Dirofilaria immitis in vitro and in vivo. All in vitro tests were performed on larvae incubated for 48 hours at 37 degrees C in Hepes buffered medium 199 containing 20% serum, benzylpenicillin and streptomycin. In vivo tests were performed on larvae in female BALB/C mice dosed with ivermectin, 5 mg/kg, orally. The microfilariae of B. pahangi in vitro were insensitive to ivermectin at concentrations to 30 ng/ml. In vivo, an 87% reduction in the level of microfilaraemia was obtained by 24 hours after

Rapid assessment of the rate of transmission of schistosomiasis is essential in any control programme. It has been demonstrated that, by following the pattern of infection developing during a longitudinal study in a cohort of children under 6 years of age, it is possible to calculate the incidence of schistosomiasis in the community represented by that cohort. Children who were found by survey to be free from active infection with schistosomes were examined at intervals of 1, 3, or 4 months to determine the rate at which infections of either Schistosoma mansoni or S. haematobium occurred. This

BACKGROUND: Human schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease of major public health importance in sub-Saharan Africa. Mass drug administration (MDA) with praziquantel (PZQ) is the cornerstone of schistosomiasis control. However, its effectiveness is challenged by variable cure rates and rapid reinfection. Longitudinal data on reinfection and true incidence, which are critical for refining control strategies, are scarce from high-transmission foci like the Lango sub-region in Northern Uganda. This study assessed the efficacy of PZQ and the 24-week dynamics of reinfection and incidence of Schistosom
