Autonomic dependence of ventriculoatrial conduction.

To evaluate the effects of isoproterenol and atropine on patients with poor ventriculoatrial (VA) conduction, 17 patients were studied who did not have 1-to-1 VA conduction during ventricular pacing at a rate slightly faster than sinus rate (group I) and 11 patients were studied who had 1-to-1 VA conduction, but only at constant ventricular pacing cycle lengths longer than 600 ms (group II). Isoproterenol infusion at a rate causing a 20 to 30% increase in sinus rate or up to 4 micrograms/min shortened the ventricular pacing cycle lengths that induced VA block in all group II patients. Atropine

Prolongation of refractoriness and activation time in normal canine ventricular myocardium following bolus administration of lidocaine.

This study examines the electrophysiologic effects of an intravenous bolus of lidocaine in the normal canine ventricle. In 14 open-chest dogs, left ventricular effective refractory period, ventricular repolarization time, and activation time were measured continuously during ventricular pacing (150/min) before, during, and after intravenous lidocaine given over 4 minutes. Lidocaine doses of 1.25, 2.5, and 5.0 mg/kg transiently prolonged the ventricular effective refractory period from 177 +/- 4 (X +/- standard error of the mean) to 185 +/- 5 msec (p less than 0.05), 176 +/- 3 to 188 +/- 6 msec

Neural connections between the hypothalamus and the liver.

After receiving information from afferent nerves, the hypothalamus sends signals to peripheral organs, including the liver, to keep homeostasis. There are two ways for the hypothalamus to signal to the peripheral organs: by stimulating the autonomic nerves and by releasing hormones from the pituitary gland. In order to reveal the involvement of the autonomic nervous system in liver function, we focus in this study on autonomic nerves and neuroendocrine connections between the hypothalamus and the liver. The hypothalamus consists of three major areas: lateral, medial, and periventricular. Each …

Axon injury induced endoplasmic reticulum stress and neurodegeneration.

Injury to central nervous system axons is a common early characteristic of neurodegenerative diseases. Depending on its location and the type of neuron, axon injury often leads to axon degeneration, retrograde neuronal cell death and progressive permanent loss of vital neuronal functions. Although these sequential events are clearly connected, ample evidence indicates that neuronal soma and axon degenerations are active autonomous processes with distinct molecular mechanisms. By exploiting the anatomical and technical advantages of the retinal ganglion cell (RGC)/optic nerve (ON) system, we de

Sex differences in regulatory mechanisms of the cardiovascular system during simulated hypokinesia.

The study examined sex-specific differences in the autonomic response to simulated hypokinesia. Nine healthy males (23±3 years) and nine females (26±3 years) underwent 5‑day dry immersion. Heart rate variability (HRV) analysis and factor analysis (8 indices) were used to assess autonomic regulation. Factor analysis revealed three factors explaining >80% of variance. Factor 1 (SDNN, RMSSD) was universal for both sexes, but only in males did it also include heart rate with the opposite sign. Factor 2 comprised LF in females and VLF with HF, % (opposite signs) in males. Factor 3 comprised VLF in

Colour changes in the feet: a sign of autonomic symptoms in systemic sclerosis.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with autonomic dysfunction, or dysautonomia, often report discolouration of their dependent extremities, which is thought to be from venous pooling or acrocyanosis. A subset of patients with SSc are affected by dysautonomia but may be challenging to identify. We sought to determine whether patients with SSc who report discolouration in their feet have a higher burden of autonomic symptoms, including orthostatic, gastrointestinal (GI), urinary, secretomotor and pupillomotor. METHODS: 167 patients with SSc completed the Composite Autonomic Symptom Score (COMPASS)-31 survey,

Autonomic and cholinergic mechanisms mediating cardiovascular and temperature effects of donepezil in conscious mice.

Donepezil is a centrally acting acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor with therapeutic potential in inflammatory diseases; however, the underlying autonomic and cholinergic mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we assessed effects of donepezil on mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), HR variability, and body temperature in conscious adult male C57BL/6 mice to investigate the autonomic pathways involved. Central versus peripheral cholinergic effects of donepezil were assessed using pharmacological approaches including comparison with the peripherally acting AChE inhibitor, neostigmine. Drug

Diagnostic criteria for idiopathic small fiber neuropathy: A systematic review.

Idiopathic small fiber neuropathy (iSFN) lacks broadly accepted diagnostic criteria, which hinders its timely diagnosis and treatment. A systematic literature review was performed to assess the published screening and diagnostic criteria for iSFN, excluding studies where SFN was of well-established etiology. Eighty-four clinical studies and seven guideline/review publications were included in this systematic review. Substantial heterogeneity existed in iSFN diagnostic criteria. The most common set of criteria to diagnose iSFN [presence of any symptoms of iSFN, absence of large fiber involvemen

The Role of the Vagal Nucleus Tractus Solitarius in the Therapeutic Effects of Obesity Surgery and Other Interventional Therapies on Type 2 Diabetes.

The current treatment for obesity-related type 2 diabetes is not able to achieve sufficient metabolic control. New remission prospects have been offered through bariatric surgery and other interventional therapies. The aim of the study is to illustrate the mechanism by which such therapies affect the autonomic system, in particular the afferent vagal activity. The first and most important terminal of this activity is the brainstem vagal nucleus tractus solitarius. Its function, on which the vagal efferent inputs that control the splanchnic organs depend, is conditioned by the level of synaptic

Recursive identification of an arterial baroreflex model for the evaluation of cardiovascular autonomic modulation.

The evaluation of the time-varying vagal and sympathetic contributions to heart rate remains a challenging task because the observability of the baroreflex is generally limited and the time-varying properties are difficult to take into account, especially in non-stationnary conditions. The objective is to propose a model-based approach to estimate the autonomic modulation during a pharmacological challenge. A recursive parameter identification method is proposed and applied to a mathematical model of the baroreflex, in order to estimate the time-varying vagal and sympathetic contributions to h

The circulating level of leptin and blood pressure in patients with multiple system atrophy.

Patients with multiple system atrophy (MSA) frequently exhibit orthostatic hypotension (OH). Leptin, an adipose-derived hormone, contributes to the sympathetic control of blood pressure (BP), and loss of leptin may cause OH. We aimed to clarify the relationship between leptin and OH in MSA. Serum leptin levels were measured in 36 patients with MSA, 25 patients with other atypical parkinsonian disorders (APDs), including progressive supranuclear palsy-Richardson syndrome and corticobasal syndrome, and 26 control subjects. Blood samples were obtained after fasting for 12h. In MSA patients, basel

Laryngeal and respiratory protective reflexes.

Swallowing is a complex motor behavior that relies on an interneuronal network of premotor neurons (PMNs) to organize the sequential activity of motor neurons that are active during the buccopharyngeal and esophageal phases. Swallowing PMNs are highly interconnected to multiple areas of the brain stem and the central nervous system and provide a potential anatomic substrate integration of swallowing activity with airway protective reflexes. Because these neurons have synaptic contact with both afferent inputs and motor neurons and exhibit a true central activity, they appear to constitute the

The association of Clostridium botulinum type C with equine grass sickness: a toxicoinfection?

The cause of grass sickness, an equine dysautonomia, is unknown. The disease usually results in death. Gastrointestinal (GI) dysfunction is a common clinical manifestation in all forms of the disease. It is generally thought that equine grass sickness (EGS) is caused by an ingested or enterically produced neurotoxin which is absorbed through the GI tract. Clostridium botulinum was first implicated as a causative agent when it was isolated from the GI tract of a horse with EGS in 1919. The aim of the present study was to investigate the hypothesis that EGS results from toxicoinfection with C. b

Principal features of the nerve supply to the ovary, oviduct and tubal third of the uterus in the golden hamster.

The autonomic outflow and sensory structures in the ovary and accessory reproductive organs of the hamster are described by means of specific fluorescence and enzyme histochemical techniques for the demonstration of catecholamine and acetylcholinesterase (AChE), respectively. Sympathetic nerves accompany branches of the major blood vessels in the mesentery of the ovary, oviduct and tubal uterine horn and invest the vascular bed in each of these organs. Vasomotor fibers predominate in the ovary and oviduct, though occasional adrenergic axons supply thecal and interstitial tissues in the ovary a
