Correlation of nosocomial bloodstream infection incidences: an ecological study.

This study aimed to correlate nosocomial bloodstream infections (NBIs) across time against the ecological effect of infection control activities. All patients hospitalised >or=48h in the haematology and intensive care departments of a university hospital and discharged between 1 January 2004 and 30 June 2006 were prospectively included. The case definition of NBI infection was: (1) at least one positive blood culture justified by clinical signs, or (2) at least two positive blood cultures when the micro-organism was one of the following: coagulase-negative staphylococci, Bacillus spp. (except …

Molecular characterization and proposal of a neotype strain for Bartonella bacilliformis.

Bartonella bacilliformis, the etiologic agent of bartonellosis, was characterized biochemically and by DNA hybridization, guanine-plus-cytosine content, genome size, and 16S rRNA sequencing. DNAs from the two strains in our collection exhibited 97% relatedness in hydroxyapatite reactions done at 55 degrees C (optimal reassociation criterion) and 100% relatedness in reactions done at 70 degrees C (stringent reassociation criterion). There was no evidence of divergence within the related sequences. B. bacilliformis DNA showed no relatedness to the cat scratch disease bacillus or to a strain of a…

Pseudomonas aeruginosa as an uncommon agent of infectious panniculitis.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a Gram-negative bacillus that frequently causes septicemia, abscesses and infections in skin wounds. Panniculitis caused by this microorganism is unusual and there are few well-documented cases, none of them in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus. The present report describes an immunosuppressed patient with systemic lupus erythematosus who developed panniculitis caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, with a review of the literature on this rare presentation.

Hepatic Actinomycosis Mimicking Malignancy After Pancreaticoduodenectomy: A Case Report.

Abdominal actinomycosis is a rare disease caused by a Gram-positive bacillus (Actinomyces). Liver manifestation is rare and, in patients with a history of cancer, differential diagnosis with secondary malignant disease can be difficult. Microbiological result is necessary for a correct diagnosis, though not always possible in preoperative workout. The authors present a case of hepatic actinomycosis that mimicked oncological disease and led to a more aggressive surgical approach.

SERS of meso-droplets supported on superhydrophobic wires allows exquisitely sensitive detection of dipicolinic acid, an anthrax biomarker, considerably below the infective dose.

Surface-enhanced Raman measurements of <1 μL analyte/colloid meso-droplets on superhydrophobic wires with hydrophilic tips allowed dipicolinic acid, a spore biomarker for Bacillus anthracis (anthrax), to be detected at 10(-6) mol dm(-3). This is equivalent to 18 spores, significantly below the infective dose of 10(4) spores and 2 orders of magnitude better than previous measurements.

Targeting intracellular bacteria with an extended cationic amphiphilic polyproline helix.

An extended cationic and amphiphilic polyproline helix (CAPH) is described with a dual mode of action: effective cell penetration of human macrophages, and potent antimicrobial activity in vitro against both Gram-positive and negative pathogens, including Acinetobacter baumannii, Escherichia coli O157 and Bacillus anthracis. This dual action was successfully combined to clear pathogenic bacteria (Brucella and Salmonella) residing within macrophages.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteremia secondary to acute right leg cellulitis: case of community-acquired infection.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a gram-negative bacillus that causes wide spectrum clinical infections. However, it is most frequently associated with hospital-acquired infection. In this case a 58-year-old male with underlying hypertension and dyslipidaemia was admitted for acute right leg cellulitis. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was identified from the case, though it was not a usual suspected organism. It might be due to community-acquired infection.

Animal carcass and eyelid anthrax: a case report.

Anthrax is a worldwide zoonosis of herbivores, which is caused by the spore-forming bacteria Bacillus anthracis, and humans become infected when they are exposed to infected animals and their tissues or the organism directly. In this report, we present a 13-year-old boy who developed eyelid anthrax after contact with a sheep carcass during his summer holiday that resulted in eyelid anthrax and cicatricial ectropion.

Toxemic shock, hematuria, hypokalemia, and hypoproteinemia in a case of cutaneous anthrax.

A 20-year-old woman who had daily contact with domestic herbivores presented with a painless and pruritic lesion in her neck; the lesion ulcerated to a black necrotic eschar from which Bacillus anthracis grew. Rapidly expanding edema at the site of the ulcer was followed by shock, hematuria, hypokalemia, and hypoproteinemia. The latter symptoms - unusual for cutaneous anthrax - responded to intravenous penicillin therapy.

Epithelioid angiomatosis in patients with AIDS. Report of seven cases and review of the literature.

Seven cases of a distinctive vascular proliferation in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome are discussed and compared with other reported cases. All cases share clinical and pathologic manifestations that can be recognized early. Warthin-Starry-positive bacilli within some of the lesions and their response to erythromycin may indicate that the proliferation is associated with an infectious agent, possibly the bacillus that causes cat-scratch disease.

Influence of body weight on response of Fischer 344 rats to anthrax lethal toxin.

Groups of Fischer 344 rats were injected intravenously with Bacillus anthracis culture supernatant containing crude anthrax toxin. Times to death of rats given identical toxin preparations varied directly with the weights of the rats (P = 0.0001). In contrast to previous reports, the data indicate that rat weight must be taken into account during in vivo assays of anthrax lethal toxin activity.

One stone two birds: Endophytes alleviating trace elements accumulation and suppressing soilborne pathogen by stimulating plant growth, photosynthetic potential and defense related gene expression.

In the present investigation, we utilized zinc nanoparticles (Zn-NPs) and bacterial endophytes to address the dual challenge of heavy metal (HM) toxicity in soil and Rhizoctonia solani causing root rot disease of tomato. The biocontrol potential of Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens was harnessed, resulting in profound inhibition of R. solani mycelial growth and efficient detoxification of HM through strong production of various hydrolytic enzymes and metabolites. Surprisingly, Zn-NPs exhibited notable efficacy in suppressing mycelial growth and enhancing the seed germination (%)…

Combined Plate Microbial Assay (CPMA): a 6-plate-method for simultaneous first and second level screening of antibacterial residues in meat.

This paper proposes an improved high throughput microbial method for the simultaneous performance of first and second level screening for antibacterial residues in meat. It is based on growth inhibition of B. subtilis on agar medium pH 6, 7.2 and 8, of B. cereus on agar medium pH 5.9, of M. luteus on agar medium pH 8 and of E. coli on agar medium pH 7.2 (research or first level screening) and on the use of confirmatory solutions (Pase, Paba, MgSO4) for the identification or second level screening. In kidney control samples, dialysis membranes were interposed between samples and the agar surfac

Dark Field Microscopy-Based Biosensors for the Detection of E. coli in Environmental Water Samples.

Development of sensitive methods for the determination of E. coli bacteria contamination in water distribution systems is of paramount importance to ensure the microbial safety of drinking water. This work presents a new sensing platform enabling the fast detection of bacteria in field samples by using specific antibodies as the biorecognition element and dark field microscopy as the detection technique. The development of the sensing platform was performed using non-pathogenic bacteria, with the E. coli DH5α strain as the target, and Bacillus sp. 9727 as the negative control. The identificati…

Antimicrobial activity and stability of weakly acidified chlorous acid water.

The antimicrobial activity of weakly acidified chlorous acid water (WACAW) against Staphylococcus aureus, non-pathogenic Escherichia coli, enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC O157:H7), Candida albicans, and spore-forming Bacillus and Paenibacillus species was evaluated in vitro. The antiviral activity was also examined using feline calicivirus (FCV). Diluted WACAW (>100 ppm) effectively reduced the number of non-spore-forming bacteria (>4 log10 CFU reductions) within 5 min. Treatment with this sanitizer at 400 ppm for 30 min achieved>5 log10 CFU reductions in spore-forming Bacillus and Paenibacill…
