Serum bile acid concentrations were measured after food had been withheld for 12 hours (fasting serum bile acid [FSBA] concentration) and 2 hours after a meal (post-prandial serum bile acid [PSBA] concentration) using a direct enzymatic procedure in 108 cats clinically suspected of having hepatobiliary disease. The effects of temporary water deprivation for 48 h on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of bumetanide were examined after intravenous (i.v.) administration of bumetanide, 8 mg kg-1 to control and water deprived rats (n = 7). Data are reported of a study of the functional state of the biliary in 50 patients with chronic cholecystitis by means of complex employment of dynamic echo- and cholecystography and dynamic computerized gamma-hepatobilioscintigraphy. It was found that dynamic echo- and cholecystography proved highly efficient indicating that ultrasound tomography is of importance not only the diagnosis of structural but also functional disorders in cholecystitis, for the choice of optimal tactics and evaluation of the efficacy of therapeutic measures excluding radiation treatment.

Species differences in biliary excretion of methylmercury and non-protein sulfhydryls (NPSHs) were studied using male rats, mice, rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters. EDTA was added to all mixtures used throughout the experimental procedures to prevent oxidation of NPSHs. Gastroenterostomy as part of the palliation of unresectable cancer of the head of the pancreas, in the absence of gastric outlet obstruction at the time of surgery, has been both rejected, and, more recently, advocated for all such patients. We analysed 117 cases of peritonitis in children. They were divided into two groups: -- Newborn and very young infants with peritonitis. -- Older children with peritonitis. The different causes in every group were studied, and it was attempted to find the particular criteria for each cause. The mortality in newborn and young infants is high, but resuscitation methods and appropriate surgical therapy are giving encouraging results. In older children the mortality from peritonitis is low and more or less resembles that in adults.
