Inter- and intraindividual variability of bacterial content in boar semen.

The aim of this study was to evaluate inter- and intraindividual variability in total bacterial count (TBC) in raw and extended boar semen and to identify management- and animal-related factors associated with this variability. Semen samples from 92 clinically healthy boars of different breeds and ages, housed in barns with varying bedding, ventilation and cooling systems, were examined monthly over a 13-month period. Progressive motility of diluted sperm (PMSd) was assessed by computer-assisted semen analysis (CASA) on the day of collection (D0) and after 7 days of storage at 16°C (D7). Total

Taming pet allergens: strategies to make furry cats less allergenic.

Much research on allergy to furry animals focuses on diagnosis and treatment of the human patients. However, this review will explore strate … enzymatic washing agents, which can reduce the allergen load in the environment. Finally, selective breeding and choice of animal breeds with inherently lower allergen production or reduced shedding may further mitigate exposure. Together, these interventions represent a shift from exclusively human-targeted allergy therapies toward integrated approaches t …

Beyond the Mission: Long-Term Endocrine Dynamics in Search and Rescue Dog-Handler Teams.

Search and rescue (SAR) dog-handler teams work under challenging conditions that may influence long-term physiological stress and arousal. Hair steroid analysis provides a reliable measure of chronic endocrine activity in SAR teams. Hair cortisol (HCL) and hair testosterone (HTL) offer non-invasive markers of chronic hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) and (the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal) HPG axis activity. This study examined long-term endocrine patterns in SAR dogs and their handlers and explored correlations within and between species. Hair samples were collected from 60 SAR dogs and t

Silent Threats: A Narrative Review of Urinary Bladder Cancer in Dogs and Cats-Epidemiology and Risk Factors.

Urinary bladder neoplasms are clinically relevant in dogs and cats and are also common in humans, all of which may share exposure to environmental factors that influence disease risk. In Veterinary Medicine, however, their etiological determinants remain poorly defined. Urinary bladder neoplasia range from non-invasive lesions limited to the mucosa to invasive forms that infiltrate the muscular layer, which are more aggressive and metastatic. In dogs, invasive urothelial carcinoma (UC) represents the most frequently diagnosed type, while in cats, it is less common but displays similar biologic

Degree of Inflammation in Surgically Obtained Intervertebral Disc Extrusions in a Population of 74 Dogs.

Intervertebral disc disease remains the most common spinal pathology in dogs and is characterized by degeneration of the intervertebral disc, primarily through chondroid metaplasia of the nucleus pulposus. Current histological grading systems for disc degeneration do not include inflammation, despite its potential relevance in clinical presentation through extradural swelling and compression. In this retrospective study, surgically removed disc extrusion material from 74 dogs was histologically processed and evaluated using a semi-quantitative grading system for disc degeneration and inflammat

Arterial vascularization of the pig thyroid gland: an anatomical identification and variations.

The thyroid gland is a highly vascularized organ in vertebrates. However, the information on the vascular pattern of this gland in pigs remains limited. This study elucidates the morphoanatomy and arterial supply of the gland in three breeds: Landrace (L), Large White (W), and Crossbreed (LWD). Two hundred twelve pigs were used and dissected to observe the arteries supplying blood to the gland. As a result, the gland was classified into three types based on its appearance: pear-shaped, butterfly-shaped, or partially separated. Moreover, the arteries supplying the gland were observed and then c

Rickettsial seropositivity in Lao PDR smallholder livestock farms: Implications for animal and human health.

Rickettsioses are emerging zoonotic diseases in Southeast Asia caused by vector-borne, intracellular Rickettsia bacteria that threaten public health, animal welfare, and food security. Despite their importance to rural livelihoods, the epidemiology of rickettsial exposure in livestock remains poorly understood. This study used abattoir-based serology to evaluate livestock as sentinels of environmental exposure to Rickettsia in Lao PDR and to identify spatial hotspots and risk factors for seropositivity. Abattoir-based serological data were generated from cattle, pigs, and water buffalo samples

The genetic architecture of milk urea concentration in dairy cattle differs across the lactation cycle.

Milk urea concentration (MUC) is an indicator of dietary protein utilization and nitrogen use efficiency in dairy cows. We performed GWAS on MUC in early, mid, and late lactation in the Holstein (HOL) and Brown Swiss (BSW) dairy cattle breeds using imputed sequence variants. We identified 11 and 17 independent QTL for MUC across the 3 lactation stages in BSW and HOL, respectively. Although many of these QTL have previously been reported for MUC and other dairy traits, our study provides evidence that some QTL exert lactation stage-specific effects. Our findings suggest that variants at the DGA

Primer-walking sequencing identifies predominantly noncoding TP53 variants in canine cancers.

IMPORTANCE: Tumor protein p53 (TP53) alterations are frequently reported in canine cancers but remain incompletely characterized due to differences in reference genomes and sequencing cost. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a cost-efficient primer-walking approach for TP53 variant screening in dogs with spontaneous tumors. METHODS: Tumor tissue (n = 10) or blood (n = 16) was collected from 26 dogs with suspected neoplasia. Interpretable TP53 sequences spanning introns and exons 2-11, excluding long intron 1 and non-protein-coding exon 1, were obtained by primer-walking polymerase chain reaction and San

Genomic analyses identify 15 risk loci and reveal HDAC2, SOX2-OT, and IGF2BP2 in a naturally occurring canine model of gastric cancer.

Gastric cancer ranks as the fifth most common human cancer worldwide and has a poor survival rate and limited treatment options. Despite the high prevalence and mortality rate, the genetic etiology is largely unknown. In dogs, a clinically and histologically similar disease disproportionately affects two breeds, the Belgian Tervuren and Belgian Sheepdog, which develop the intestinal and diffuse tumor subtypes observed in humans. We performed a Bayesian genome-wide association study and selection analyses in this naturally occurring canine model to elucidate underlying genetic risk factors for

A Retrospective Study on Pre- and Intraoperative Predictors on the Recovery Quality of Horses After General Anesthesia.

Equine anesthesia is related to high morbidity and mortality rates and recent studies suggested that the period of recovery remains the phase associated with the greatest risk of mortality in horses. Intraoperative hypotension, hypoxemia, and hypercapnia are recognized as potential determinants of recovery quality. This study, conducted at the Equine University Hospital of Liege, aimed to explore how these factors influence recovery outcomes and compare complications between non-emergency and emergency procedures. We analyzed data from 1057 horses, with a mean weight of 498 kg (ranging from 15
