A case of migrating inhaled ear of barley in a 2 1/2 year old boy is reported with: 1) mild initial symptoms at the time of inhalation followed by a symptomless interval of 8 days; 2) at day 9 fever and dyspnea, right paracardiac infiltrate with pleural reaction on X-rays, normal bronchoscopy; 3) at day 11 extensive right pneumothorax; 4) at day 20, right axillary inflammatory lesion; 5) at day 28 expulsion of an ear of barley from this lesion, followed by complete recovery.

Eleven cases of tracheobronchial rupture are described. Nine were the result of external non-penetrating trauma and all but three had other serious injuries. The remaining two were caused by endobronchial intubation. Of the cases caused by external injury, respiratory tract injury was confined to the cervical trachea in three. The myotropic effect of platelet activating factor (PAF), leukotriene D4 (LTD4) and histamine were compared on guinea pig pulmonary tissues. The initial administration of PAF induced a contraction of strips of trachea, bronchus and lung parenchyma. Aspergillus is a genus of cosmopolitan fungi with a selective pulmonary tropism. Their pathogenic role is due either to spreading in pre-existing pulmonary cavities, or to their allergizing capacity. Cavitary sequellae of tuberculosis and suppuration, particularly frequent and important in tropical environment, are elective localization for Aspergillus colonization. Surgical treatment is nowadays the only efficient one. Allergic manifestations are a more complex problem of therapy, exclusion of allergen being difficult to get in tropical environment.

One hundred and three bronchial asthma patients with a suspected allergic component developed 133 positive immediate asthmatic (bronchus-obstructive) responses (IARs) to bronchial challenge with allergen (BP). Phorbol ester tumor promoters enhance the ability of primary normal rat tracheal epithelial cells to form colonies in a time-dependent fashion. The potency of phorbol derivatives in inducing this effect is relative to their potency as tumor promoters in mouse epidermis. We examined the relations between bronchial reactivity, baseline FEV1, and annual decline of height corrected FEV1 (delta FEV1/ht3) over 7.5 years in 227 men (117 smokers, 71 ex-smokers, and 39 non-smokers). In patients with analgesics induced asthma (AIA) provocation tests by inhalation are less dangerous than oral provocation. Bianco et al. and Schmitz-Schumann et al. described an inhalation provocation test (IPT) with Lysine-acetylsalicylic-acid (Lys-ASA). Xeroderma pigmentosum fibroblasts (XPF) are defective in the repair of certain DNA adducts. We show here that XPF cells are more sensitive to the toxic effects of chrysotile, amosite and crocidolite asbestos than are normal human fibroblasts (NF). XPF cells from different complementation groups have a sensitivity to chrysotile which parallels the degree of their DNA repair deficiency. In addition, the survival of normal cells after chrysotile exposure increases with time if they are kept from replicating, while the survival of XPF cells under the same circumstances does not change.

The alkaline elution technique was used to study repair of DNA damage caused by formaldehyde (HCHO) in human bronchial epithelial cells and fibroblasts, skin fibroblasts, and DNA excision repair-deficient skin fibroblasts from donors with xeroderma pigmentosum. To our knowledge, this is the first description of the computed tomographic appearance of a displaced right upper lobe bronchus. The case reported is that of a 43 year-old woman who had known congenital heart disease and systemic hypertension. The computed tomographic study demonstrated a displaced right upper lobe bronchus; a persistent left superior vena cava; pulmonary hypertension with associated dilatation of the right chambers of the heart consistent with a longstanding left to right shunt; and subsequent development of pulmonary hypertension.

There are subgroups of subjects showing increased bronchial responsiveness to histamine among patients with sarcoidosis and with allergic alveolitis (farmer's lung). To test the relative importance of cholinergic effects on the Basenji-Greyhound (BG) model of asthma, we administered Ascaris antigen to Ascaris-sensitive BG dogs without other treatment, and following intravenous atropine. Pulmonary resistance (RL) increased from 1.4 +/- 0.43 cmH2O . l-1 . s (mean + SE) to 26.0 +/- 5.21 after Ascaris antigen exposure in seven untreated dogs.
