A case-control study of children of ages 10 years and under in Los Angeles County was conducted to investigate the causes of leukemia. The mothers and fathers of acute leukemia cases and their individually matched controls were interviewed regarding specific occupational and home exposures as well as other potential risk factors associated with leukemia. Four hundred ninety-seven patients were identified as having been treated for cysticercosis at four hospitals in Los Angeles during the 11-year period 1973 through 1983. Eleven deaths were recorded. Over 90% of these patients were Hispanics in productive age groups; the majority were Mexican by nationality. Hospitalizations were generally short, and readmissions for recurrence of symptoms or complications of therapy occurred in only 14% of patients. This paper reports the findings of a nonparticipant observational study of a "gang" of late-adolescent, middle-class youths in a Southern California beach community over an 11-year period. The significance of family background, interpersonal relationships in the home, and socialization processes were explored in relation to such factors as the use of drugs, sexual experiences, and other "deviant" behavior. The authors studied 2,950 population-based colon cancer cases in males in Los Angeles County, California, that were diagnosed between 1972 and 1981. To determine if colon cancer risk is reduced by physical activity on the job in males aged 20-64 years, the authors first rated each occupation by judging the activity level as high, moderate, or sedentary. An obstetrician and two staff members developed rubella and exposed 56 susceptible pregnant women in a large prenatal and family planning clinic. Two women (3.6%) developed rubella at 27 and 38 weeks' gestation and delivered uneventfully. Sixteen hundred clinic and hospital employees were tested, with 79% of the total and 48 of 59 (81.4%) OB/GYN personnel showing prior infection and/or immunity (HAI titer greater than or equal to 1:8). We analyzed 305 patients with either single or multiple vessel disease, as demonstrated by coronary arteriography, to determine risk factor and sex differences. Women accounted for more than one fourth of the patients with single vessel disease (group A), but for only one seventh of the individuals with multiple vessel disease (group B). Hemagglutinating antigens of Western equine encephalomyelitis (WEE) virus and 5 strains of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus were charcaterized by their capacity to adsorb on inorganic (kaolin, bentonite, barium sulphate) and organic (chick embryo fibroblasts) adsorbents. In a study of 1,330 ectopic pregnancies, 123 (9 per cent) patients experienced repeat tubal pregnancies. Sera from birds of the order Anseriformes in Czechoslovakia were examined for virus neutralizing (VN) antibodies to arboviruses. VN antibodies to Sindbis, Calovo and Tahyna viruses were found in 15, 5 and 6 out of 106 greylag goose (Anser anser) sera. Out of 38 ducks, 6 mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) and 1 garganey (Anas querquedula) contained VN antibodies to Sindbis virus, 6 mallards to Calovo virus, 4 mallards and 1 garganey to Tahyna virus, 2 mallards and 1 garganey to tick-borne encephalitis (TE) virus and 1 mallard to West Nile (WN) virus.
