Trends and projections of cervical and subcervical spinal cord injury burden in China: An observational study analysis for the GBD 2021.

Cervical spinal cord injury (CSCI) and subcervical spinal cord injury (SSCI) are severe central nervous system disorders with high disability and mortality rates, imposing a substantial burden on patients and society. To assess the incidence and prevalence and trends of spinal cord injury (SCI) in China, we analyzed data from the global burden of disease 2021 study. Variations in the age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR), prevalence rate (ASPR), and years lived with disability rate (ASYR) for CSCI and SSCI were evaluated using Joinpoint regression and age-period-cohort models, and long-term t

Cervical rib synostosis with the first rib and an elongated C7 transverse process: a rare variation causing thoracic outlet syndrome.

Morphological variants in the cervical and thoracic regions, although often asymptomatic, can have significant clinical implications when they contribute to conditions such as thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS). We report a rare case of a 39-year-old female patient presenting with vascular TOS. Detailed imaging via high-resolution computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) revealed a right-sided elongated transverse process (ETP) of the C7 (24.70 mm in length) articulating with a cervical rib (CR), which showed synostosis with the first rib. The coexistence of CR synostosis

Adaptation and Validation of the Standardized Swallowing Assessment Tool for Patients With Moderate-Severe Traumatic Brain Injury and Cervical Spinal Cord Injury.

Oropharyngeal dysphagia is common in moderate-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) patients and can have serious consequences. Delaying feeding in these patients can also be detrimental. Nonetheless, the psychometric properties of screening tools that can promptly identify dysphagia have never been tested in these neurotrauma populations. This study aimed to: (1) adapt, translate, and validate the content of the French-Canadian version of the the Standardized Swallowing Assessment (SSA) tool to meet the needs of moderate-severe TBI and cervical SCI patients

Diaphragm Motor-Evoked Potential Induced by Cervical Magnetic Stimulation following Cervical Spinal Cord Contusion in the Rat.

Cervical spinal injury is typically associated with respiratory impairments due to damage to bulbospinal respiratory pathways and phrenic motoneurons. Magnetic stimulation is a non-invasive approach for the evaluation and modulation of the nervous system. The present study was designed to examine whether cervical magnetic stimulation can be applied to evaluate diaphragmatic motor outputs in a pre-clinical rat model of cervical spinal injury. The bilateral diaphragm was monitored in anesthetized rats using electromyogram at the acute, subchronic, and chronic stages following left mid-cervical c

The prediction of intraoperative cervical cord function changes by different motor evoked potentials phenotypes in cervical myelopathy patients.

BACKGROUND: Surgery is usually the treatment of choice for patients with cervical compressive myelopathy (CCM). Motor evoked potential (MEP) has proved to be helpful tool in evaluating intraoperative cervical spinal cord function change of those patients. This study aims to describe and evaluate different MEP baseline phenotypes for predicting MEP changes during CCM surgery. METHODS: A total of 105 consecutive CCM patients underwent posterior cervical spine decompression were prospectively collected between December 2012 and November 2016. All intraoperative MEP baselines recorded before spin

Bow Hunter's Syndrome: Surgical Management (Video) and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Bow Hunter's syndrome (BHS) is a rare condition characterized by vertebrobasilar insufficiency associated with rotational vertebral artery occlusion during head movement. Many existing reports describe surgical management, although no single technique has proven superior. OBJECTIVE: To review all reported cases of BHS with focus on outcomes of individual techniques as well as to present a video report of a posterior decompression without fusion performed at the authors' institution. METHODS: We searched PubMed for all relevant articles of BHS available in the English language. Pe

Sporadic lower motor neuron disease with a snake eyes appearance on the cervical anterior horns by MRI.

OBJECTIVE: Lower motor neuron disease (LMND) is the term generally used to describe diseases in which only lower motor neuron signs are detected. A snake eyes appearance on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is associated with a wide spectrum of neurological conditions including LMND. The author reports on three unique LMND patients with upper limb muscle weakness and atrophy who show a snake eyes appearance by MRI. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The patients were aged 18, 40 and 52 years, respectively, at the onset of the disease and had a longstanding clinical course (more than 10 years for two patien

Normal ossification patterns of atlas and axis: a CT study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Development of the CVJ is a complex process rarely analyzed by CT. Cartilaginous remnants within the atlas and axis have been shown to variably persist throughout childhood and may be mistaken for fractures. The purpose of this study was to better estimate the fusion timeline of the synchondroses at the CVJ. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed singular CT scans in 550 children without known skeletal dysplasia or maturation delay (from neonate to 17 years) and analyzed the ossification of atlas and axis. Normal closing age for synchondroses was defined as

Upper cervical trauma in motor vehicle collisions.

Motor vehicle collisions can cause a variety of injuries in pedestrians and vehicle occupants. Fatal and nonfatal trauma to the upper cervical spine, that is, atlanto-occipital junction, atlas and axis, can be part of this spectrum. Certain distinctive injuries (for example, "hangman's fracture") which occur result from the unique anatomic structure of this area and the various disruptive forces such as extension, distraction (tension), compression (axial loading), shear, and inertia generated during collision. Correlation of autopsy findings or radiological information of these cervical injur

Computed axial tomography in C1-C2 trauma.

Twenty patients with C1-C2 vertebral trauma underwent computed tomographic (CT) scans to evaluate prospectively its efficiency for diagnosis and treatment. It is suggested that if standard roentgenograms are inconclusive, CT scan is recommended for further evaluation of C1 fractures and C1-C2 rotatory subluxation in preference to tomography and cineradiography. CT scans do not assess dynamic stability and may miss minimally displaced odontoid fractures. It was also concluded that they add little in the treatment of hangman's fractures, although scanning did show that the pathology was often mo
