The author' case was a 74 year-old Japanese female who died of senility. This case had a small-sized communicating branch corresponding to the left brachiocephalic vein and uniting bilateral superior venae cavae. 2 anastomotic branches were observed among the azygos, the hemi-azygos and the accessory hemiazygos vein, and also a small anastomotic branch between the accessory hemiazygos vein and the left s.v.c. The relationship between oral contraceptive (OC) use and occurrence of fibrocystic breast disease (FBD) of different histologic classifications was evaluated with data from a cohort study. In a retrospective study in children aged 0-18 years, 457 ankle fractures in children were classified traumatologically according to Gerner-Smidt or Lauge-Hansen. Anatomically, ankle fractures with open growth plates were classified according to the Salter-Harris classification. The authors present the historical evolution of the concepts of non-Hodgkin malignant lymphomas which lead to the new functional classifications of Lukes and of Kiel. These classifications are based on the discoveries of modern immunology and are relying on the marking techniques for the identification of the T, B and U lymphocytes. Arguments are presented why these modern nomenclatures should progressively replace the Rappaport classification which preceded the major developments of modern immunology. The Kiel nomenclature is briefly described.

The rapid development of chemotherapy and radiotherapy during the last decade makes an increasing demand for a reliable classification of malignant non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. This is especially important in children since in this age group the lymphomas show a much worse prognosis than in adults.
