Agranulocytosis is a rare but serious adverse effect of sulfasalazine treatment. We present a case of a 51-year-old woman receiving sulfasalazine for inflammatory arthritis presenting with sore throat, fever, lethargy and leucopenia (white cell count 0.9 × 10(9)/L). After 9 days of treatment with filgrastim (granulocyte-colony stimulating factor, G-CSF), her white cell count increased to 77.4 × 10(9)/L. This case highlights the importance of recognising sulfasalazine-induced agranulocytosis and the management of hyperleucocytosis following G-CSF treatment, to prevent harmful sequelae.

A controlled trial of once daily cleaning of computer keyboards in an intensive care unit was performed comparing 2% chlorhexidine gluconate-70% isopropyl alcohol (CHG) and a chlorine dioxide-based product used as a standard in our hospital. Chromoblastomycosis is a chronic, tropical and subtropical, subcutaneous mycosis caused by inoculation of dematiaceous molds. This disease is uncommonly reported in patients who have undergone solid organ transplantation. Sporotrichosis is a chronic, granulomatous and usually lymphocutaneous infection of humans and animals caused by the dimorphic fungus, Sporothrix schenckii. This study reports a case of lymphocutaneous and nasal sporotrichosis in a hunting dog with a three month history of non-healing skin lesions. The serological response in rabbits against Listeria monocytogenes after oral or intragastric inoculation was investigated. Both the number of sero-positive animals and the average serum titres were higher in animals inoculated by the oral route. For the study of the seasonal and hourly activity of the great gerbil, Rhombomys opimus in an endemic focus of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (Isfahan), two colonies were selected in which the number of gerbils was counted by visual sighting. The study shows that the gerbils are quite active from August through December. After a decrease in January and February, once again they become active but not as much as early Autumn. In the hot months of the year the gerbils are active only early in the morning and late in the afternoon. In the cooler months, they are active in the middle of the day.

Rapid proliferation of mammary epithelial cells derived from biopsy specimens of human fibroadenomas was observed when medium was supplemented with ten percent fetal bovine serum and hydrocortisone (5 microgram per ml-1).
