Central Texas ASR and Dam-Reservoir Alternatives Evaluated through Life Cycle Cost Analysis.

Life cycle costs and benefits were evaluated for aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) and dam-reservoir alternatives for one community in central Texas. The analysis included initial capital, replacement, rehabilitation, operation and maintenance, and salvage costs for the alternatives over the 50-year useful life period. Calculation of present value of costs and benefits points to lower capital and life cycle costs for the ASR alternative, potentially making it more affordable. ASR had reduced inflation vulnerability due to significantly less structural and land requirements and was over six ti

Estimating the impact and cost-effectiveness of antenatal care approaches in 24 low- and middle-income countries: a modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Antenatal care (ANC) is a critical intervention for improving maternal and newborn health outcomes, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This study modelled the potential impact and cost-effectiveness of a theoretical community-based and risk-stratified model of ANC in LMICs. METHODS: A decision-analytical model was developed to estimate health outcomes (maternal anemia, maternal deaths, newborn deaths, preterm births, stillbirths, low birth weight cases, and small for gestational age births) for 24 LMICs with demographic and health surveys conducted between 2

Analysis of the economic benefits and feasibility of the same-city delivery model for donor human milk (SCDM-DHM).

BACKGROUND: When mother's own milk (MOM) is insufficient, feeding very preterm infants with donor human milk (DHM) reduces the incidence of multiple severe complications and provides greater benefits than infant formula. Donor human milk (DHM) is obtained from breast milk banks, but establishing a human milk bank is very expensive. We propose a same-city delivery model for donor human milk (SCDM-DHM), where DHM is delivered via a cold chain from milk banks to NICUs without milk bank facilities, providing DHM to very preterm infants (VPIs). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the medical reco

Atrial fibrillation: economic burden and impact of catheter ablation.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a prevalent and significant health concern, imposing a substantial economic burden on healthcare systems worldwide. The condition is associated with an increased risk of stroke, heart failure and other comorbidities, contributing to heightened morbidity and mortality rates amongst those affected. Healthcare resource utilization and costs associated with the treatment and management of AF have become a pressing concern, particularly in the context of recurrent episodes. Catheter ablation (CA) has been demonstrated to have positive effects on relieving the economic bu

The BLISTER Score: A Novel, Externally Validated Tool for Predicting Cardiac Implantable Electronic Device Infections, and Its Cost-Utility Implications for Antimicrobial Envelope Use.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial envelopes reduce the incidence of cardiac implantable electronic device infections, but their cost restricts routine use in the United Kingdom. Risk scoring could help to identify which patients would most benefit from this technology. METHODS: A novel risk score (BLISTER [Blood results, Long procedure time, Immunosuppressed, Sixty years old (or younger), Type of procedure, Early re-intervention, Repeat procedure]) was derived from multivariate analysis of factors associated with cardiac implantable electronic device infection. Diagnostic utility was assessed against

Comparing warming strategies to reduce hypothermia and shivering in elderly abdominal or pelvic surgery patients: a network meta-analysis.

Perioperative hypothermia (PHT) and shivering represent significant clinical challenges in geriatric surgical populations. This network meta-analysis (NMA) systematically evaluates the comparative efficacy of various warming interventions in preventing PHT and shivering among elderly patients undergoing abdominal or pelvic surgery. We conducted a comprehensive literature search across PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane library, and China Wanfang databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published up to April 2024. Inclusion criteria encompassed RCTs comparing warming strategies in patients aged

Effectiveness and safety of Guilu Erxian Glue (a traditional Chinese medicinal product) for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis: A protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of postmenopausal osteoporosis is rapidly rising, with a high proportion of patients who are vulnerable to fractures and other chronic symptoms. The commonly applied Western medicine lacks cost-efficiency and tends to have various potential side effects. Guilu Erxian Glue (GEG), an orally taken traditional Chinese medicinal product, has been advocated to manage osteoporosis for a long period. However, the evidence of the efficacy of GEG on osteoporosis seems to be less convincing and conclusive. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness and

Chitosan Oligosaccharides Prevent Alcohol-Induced Liver Disease by Attenuating Inflammation and Oxidative Stress.

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is a liver disorder resulting from excessive alcohol intake, and currently, there are no therapeutics approved by the FDA for its treatment. This study investigates the protective effects and underlying pharmacological mechanisms of two chitosan oligosaccharides, COST (MW ≤ 1000 Da) and COSM (MW ≤ 3000 Da), in mitigating alcohol-induced liver disease (ALD). In animal models, we evaluated the changes in ALD following treatment with COST and COSM. Histopathological analysis revealed that both COST and COSM interventions mitigated hepatic steatosis and inflammatory i

Art-Based Intervention to Promote Psychological Adjustment, Self-Concept, and Quality of Life in Children: Protocol for a Cluster Nonrandomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Children's mental health is a critical public health priority, with approximately 8% of children aged 10 years or younger experiencing mental, behavioral, or emotional disorders. Despite evidence supporting early intervention, access to mental health services remains limited, particularly for socioeconomically disadvantaged populations. Art-based interventions have emerged as promising approaches to support mental health and socioemotional development. However, significant gaps persist in understanding their efficacy, scalability, and long-term impact. OBJECTIVE: This study aims t

Randomised controlled trial assessing the efficacy of balance acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for post-COVID syndrome: a study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Post-COVID syndrome (PCS) is an ongoing legacy of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Defined as symptoms persisting beyond 12 weeks following SARS-CoV-2 infection unexplained by an alternative diagnosis, many individuals continue to experience symptoms for months post-infection. Fatigue, breathlessness, cognitive difficulties and sleep disturbances are all commonly reported, frequently impairing daily functioning and quality of life. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), which enhances psychological flexibility and supports values-based behaviour change, has shown effectiveness across l

Cost-effectiveness of massed versus spaced trauma-focused treatment as first-line treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder in adults with multiple trauma exposure: protocol for a single-blind non-inferiority randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a serious disorder that burdens individuals and society. The current standard of first-line treatment for PTSD is spaced trauma-focused treatment (S-TFT), involving weekly sessions. While effective, S-TFT may take relatively long to complete, especially in patients exposed to multiple potentially traumatic events (PTEs). Massed trauma-focused treatment (M-TFT), involving increased session frequency, potentially results in faster symptom reduction and restoration of quality of life, as well as in a reduction of societal costs. However, M-TF

Protocol for the evaluation of the population-level impact of Zimbabwe's prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission program option B+: a community based serial cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: WHO recommends that HIV infected women receive antiretroviral therapy (ART) minimally during pregnancy and breastfeeding ("Option B"), or ideally throughout their lives regardless of clinical stage ("Option B+") (Coovadia et al., Lancet 379:221-228, 2012). Although these recommendations were based on clinical trials demonstrating the efficacy of ART during pregnancy and breastfeeding, the population-level effectiveness of Option B+ is unknown, as are retention on ART beyond the immediate post-partum period, and the relative impact and cost-effectiveness of Option B+ compared to Opt
