[OATP 1B1 T521C/A388G is an important polymorphism gene related to neonatal hyperbilirubinemia].

OBJECTIVE: Multiple genetic and environmental factors contribute to the onset of many human diseases, such as neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. OATP 1B1 is an important polymorphism gene which transmembrane transports unconjugated bilirubin(UCB). Genetic polymorphisms that affect the functionality of the protein may potentially lead to altered transport characteristics. The T521C/A388G polymorphism of this gene has been reported to considerably reduce the transporting property of drugs like pravastatin, and may be involved in the membrane translocation of bilirubin. Some studies have shown that OAT

Oocyte mitochondrial deletions and heteroplasmy in a bovine model of ageing and ovarian stimulation.

STUDY HYPOTHESIS: Maternal ageing and ovarian stimulation result in the accumulation of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) deletions and heteroplasmy in individual oocytes from a novel bovine model for human assisted reproductive technology (ART). STUDY FINDING: The levels of mtDNA deletions detected in oocytes increased with ovarian ageing. Low levels of mtDNA heteroplasmy were apparent across oocytes and no relationship was identified with respect to ovarian ageing or ovarian stimulation. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Oocyte quality decreases with ovarian ageing and it is postulated that the mtDNA may hav

A Compendium Review of the Global Epidemiology of Ticks and Tick-borne Diseases: Regional Insights from Türkiye.

Vector-borne diseases have historically posed significant threats to plants, humans, domestic animals, and wildlife, with their impact being especially pronounced in tropical and subtropical regions. Among these, tick-borne diseases (TBDs) have emerged as an increasingly critical global concern. This growing threat is largely driven by the expanding geographic range of ticks and the wide array of pathogens they transmit, including viruses, bacteria, protozoa, nematodes, fungi, and infectious prion proteins. The global cumulative economic impact of the challenges caused by ticks and TBDs contri

Improving the Understanding of the Immunopathogenesis of Lymphopenia as a Correlate of SARS-CoV-2 Infection Risk and Disease Progression in African Patients: Protocol for a Cross-sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by SARS-CoV-2, continues to impact health systems throughout the world with serious medical challenges being imposed on many African countries like Nigeria. Although emerging studies have identified lymphopenia as a driver of cytokine storm, disease progression, and poor outcomes in infected patients, its immunopathogenesis, as well as environmental and genetic determinants, remain unclear. Understanding the interplay of these determinants in the context of lymphopenia and COVID-19 complications in patients in Africa may help with risk stratification a

Chlamydophila psittaci is viable and infectious in the conjunctiva and peripheral blood of patients with ocular adnexal lymphoma: results of a single-center prospective case-control study.

Ocular adnexal MALT lymphoma (OAML) is linked to Chlamydophila psittaci (Cp) infection. Viability and infectivity of Cp, demonstrated by growth in culture, has not been yet investigated in these patients. We conducted a single-center prospective case-control study to assess the prevalence, viability and infectivity of Cp in 20 OAML patients and 42 blood donors registered in a 6-month period. The presence of Cp in conjunctival swabs and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of patients and donors was assessed by TETR-PCR and in vitro cultures. From an epidemiological point of view, OAML pat

An experimental study of catechol-o-methyltransferase Val158Met moderation of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol-induced effects on psychosis and cognition.

Observational studies have suggested that psychometric psychosis liability and a functional polymorphism in the catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT Val(158)Met) gene moderate the psychosis-inducing effect of cannabis. To replicate and extend this finding, a double-blind, placebo-controlled cross-over design was used in which patients with a psychotic disorder (n=30), relatives of patients with a psychotic disorder (n=12), and healthy controls (n=32) were exposed to Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta-9-THC, the principal component of cannabis) or placebo, followed by cognitive assessment and as

Polymorphisms of the CYP1A1 and glutathione S-transferase genes associated with susceptibility to lung cancer in relation to cigarette dose in a Japanese population.

An association of lung cancer susceptibility with an MspI restriction site polymorphism of the CYP1A1 gene was reported in our previous study. This polymorphism has been subsequently found to be closely linked to another isoleucine-valine (Ile-Val) polymorphism, which resulted in an Ile-Val amino acid replacement in the heme-binding region of P4501A1. We report here that genetic risk for squamous cell carcinoma of the lung was associated with these two polymorphisms of the CYP1A1 gene in terms of genotype frequencies and cigarette-smoking dose and that a more increased risk was observed for th

Comparative chloroplast genomics of Ajania sericea and sympatric Asteraceae species identifies shared candidate molecular features associated with alpine adaptation.

BACKGROUND: Ajania sericea is endemic to the Dali region of Yunnan and is currently the southernmost known member of the genus Ajania worldwide. It co-occurs with Aster brachytrichus, Anaphalis pannosa, and Leontopodium dedekensii in alpine habitats of northwestern Yunnan, where plants are exposed to strong ultraviolet radiation, low temperatures, strong winds, and drought. To explore whether sympatric Asteraceae species from different lineages share chloroplast genomic features associated with alpine response, we sequenced, assembled, and compared the chloroplast genomes of these four species

Unveiling hidden microbial diversity in Mars 2020 mission assembly cleanrooms with molecular insights into the persistence and perseverance of novel species defying metagenome sequencing.

NASA cleanrooms, which are critical for assembling space mission components, are maintained under stringent decontamination protocols to minimize biological contamination. These environments are characterized by nutrient-poor and oligotrophic conditions, leading to low microbial loads. Despite extensive cleaning, oligotrophs capable of surviving in such conditions continue to persist, often remaining undetected due to their low abundance, resistance to environmental stresses, and difficulties in biomolecule extraction. Even with shotgun metagenome sequencing technologies, these microbes may go

DNA methylation signature of cognitive reserve moderates CSF tau pathology in prodromal Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive reserve (CR) refers to differences in the adaptability of cognitive processes that modify the impact of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology on cognitive performance. Currently there are no established blood-based biomarkers of CR in prodromal AD. In this study, we operationalize CR as memory reserve, defined as moderation (attenuation) of the CSF pTau181-memory association. DNA methylation (DNAm) integrates genetic and environmental influences and may capture biological processes that mitigate the impact of AD pathology on memory. We aimed to identify blood DNAm loci that

Associations between dietary food categories, epigenetic age acceleration and low-grade inflammation in the Lifelines-DEEP cohort.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Low-grade inflammation (LGI) and metabolic dysfunction are tightly linked processes central to the onset and progression of complex diseases and aging. LGI acts both as a driver and a consequence of metabolic disturbances and represents a hallmark of "inflammaging", the chronic, systemic inflammatory state arising from sustained immune activation that characterizes aging and underlies many age-related pathologies. Targeting LGI through lifestyle changes, particularly diet, offers a promising approach for healthy aging. Epigenetic clocks have recently emerged as biomarkers o

Coordinated regulation of Mdr1- and Cdr1-mediated protection from antifungals by the Mrr1 transcription factor in emerging Candida spp.

UNLABELLED: Infections caused by the emerging pathogenic yeast Clavispora (Candida) lusitaniae can be difficult to manage due to multi-drug resistance. Resistance to the frontline antifungal fluconazole (FLZ) in Candida spp. is commonly acquired through gain-of-function (GOF) mutations in the gene encoding the transcription factor Mrr1. These activated Mrr1 variants enhance FLZ efflux via upregulation of the multi-drug transporter gene MDR1. Recently, it was reported that, unlike in the well-studied Candida albicans species, C. lusitaniae and Candida parapsilosis with activated Mrr1 also have

Mutation Spectrum of GJB2 in Taiwanese Patients with Sensorineural Hearing Loss: Prevalence, Pathogenicity, and Clinical Implications.

Hearing loss is often caused by genetic and environmental factors, with inherited mutations responsible for 50-60% of cases. The GJB2 gene, encoding connexin 26, is a major contributor to nonsyndromic sensorineural hearing loss (NSHL) due to its role in cellular communication critical for auditory function. In Taiwan, common deafness-associated genes include GJB2, SLC26A4, OTOF, MYO15A, and MTRNR1, which were similar to those found in other populations. The most common pathogenic genes is GJB2 mutations and the hearing level in children with GJB2 p.V37I/p.V37I or p.V37I/c.235delC was estimated

Antibiotic Resistance Profiles of Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. Isolated From Dairy Farms and Surroundings in a Rural Area of Western Anatolia, Turkey.

Background Antibiotic resistance is a significant public health issue worldwide. Antibiotic-resistant zoonotic bacteria such as Escherichia coli (E. coli), Campylobacter, Salmonella, Listeria, Coxiella, and Mycobacterium can be particularly isolated from biofertilizers. Epidemiological studies have shown that cases of foodborne infections and intoxications are significantly related to animal-derived foods. The presence of these species in aquatic environments indicates areas or organisms contaminated with animal or human feces. Especially, the presence of E. coli in aquatic environments has be

Thermal Endurance by a Hot-Spring-Dwelling Phylogenetic Relative of the Mesophilic Paracoccus.

High temperature growth/survival was revealed in a phylogenetic relative (SMMA_5) of the mesophilic Paracoccus isolated from the 78 to 85°C water of a Trans-Himalayan sulfur-borax spring. After 12 h at 50°C, or 45 min at 70°C, in mineral salts thiosulfate (MST) medium, SMMA_5 retained ~2% colony forming units (CFUs), whereas comparator Paracoccus had 1.5% and 0% CFU left at 50°C and 70°C, respectively. After 12 h at 50°C, the thermally conditioned sibling SMMA_5_TC exhibited an ~1.5 time increase in CFU count; after 45 min at 70°C, SMMA_5_TC had 7% of the initial CFU count. 1,000-times diluted

Aeromonas spp. simultaneously harbouring bla(CTX-M-15), bla(SHV-12), bla(PER-1) and bla(FOX-2), in wild-growing Mediterranean mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) from Adriatic Sea, Croatia.

Aeromonas species are becoming renowned as emerging pathogens by increasingly giving rise to a wide spectrum of food and waterborne infections in humans. Another worrisome feature of aeromonads is the growing frequency of antibiotic resistance as a consequence of their prominent diversity in terms of resistance determinants. This study aimed at determining the antimicrobial resistance pattern, prevalence and characterization of acquired β-lactamases, including extended-spectrum-β-lactamases (ESBLs) and AmpC cephalosporinases, as well as the presence of class 1 and 2 integrons, in Aeromonas iso

Preterm Risk Factors, Epigenetic Age, and Neurodevelopmental Outcomes.

IMPORTANCE: Studies examining biological factors associated with neurodevelopment in the preterm population are limited. It was previously demonstrated that epigenetic age acceleration was associated with better neurodevelopmental outcomes among children born preterm. It is unclear whether this association is modified by clinical and environmental preterm risk factors. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether the association between epigenetic aging and neurodevelopmental outcomes is modified by preterm brain injury and socioeconomic status. Molecular detection of antibiotic resistance genes in Staphylococcus aureus isolated from poultry farms of Kathmandu Valley, Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has emerged as a critical global health challenge and is currently addressed through a "One Health" approach that investigates its occurrence in humans, animals, and the environment, as well as the transmission pathways linking these reservoirs. In commercial poultry farms, antibiotics are routinely used to treat bacterial infections that are economically significant as well as to promote weight gain. However, data on AMR in Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) of poultry origin remain scarce in Nepal. Antimicrobial resistance in S aureus, particularly t
