Deafening-induced rapid changes to spine synaptic connectivity in the adult avian vocal basal ganglia.

The basal ganglia have been implicated in auditory-dependent vocal learning and plasticity in human and songbirds, but the underlying neural phenotype remains to be clarified. Here, using confocal imaging and three-dimensional electron microscopy, we investigated striatal structural plasticity in response to hearing loss in Area X, the avian vocal basal ganglia, in adult male zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata). We observed a rapid elongation of dendritic spines, by approximately 13%, by day 3 after deafening, and a considerable increase in spine synapse density, by approximately 61%, by day 14

Fitting Assistive Technology for People with Hearing Loss: The Importance of Remote Microphone Systems' Electroacoustic Verification.

The remote microphone system (RMS) must be appropriately working when fitting it in a person with hearing loss. For this verification process, the concept of transparency is adopted. If it is not transparent, the hearing aid (HA) may not capture the user's voice and his peers appropriately, or the RMS may not have the advantage in gain needed to emphasize the speaker's voice. This study investigates the influence of the receiver's gain setting on the transparency of different brands and models of RMS and HAs. It is a retrospective chart review with 277 RMS from three distinct brands (RMA, RMB,

Is the posterior cingulate cortex an on-off switch for tinnitus?: A comparison between hearing loss subjects with and without tinnitus.

As the human brain works in a Bayesian manner to minimize uncertainty toward external stimuli, the deafferented brain may generate tinnitus in an attempt to fill in missing auditory information, e.g. due to hearing loss. However, not everybody with hearing loss develops tinnitus. Understanding the differences between people with hearing loss who develop tinnitus versus those who do not offers a unique opportunity to unravel critical brain areas involved in the generation of a phantom sound. In this study, we compared resting-state quantitative electroencephalography between hearing loss patien

The impact of mild-to-severe hearing loss on the neural dynamics serving verbal working memory processing in children.

Children with hearing loss (CHL) exhibit delays in language function relative to children with normal hearing (CNH). However, evidence on whether these delays extend into other cognitive domains such as working memory is mixed, with some studies showing decrements in CHL and others showing CHL performing at the level of CNH. Despite the growing literature investigating the impact of hearing loss on cognitive and language development, studies of the neural dynamics that underlie these cognitive processes are notably absent. This study sought to identify the oscillatory neural responses serving

Blastomyces Induced Otomastoiditis With Local Soft Tissue Invasion: A Case Report.

The aim of this report is to document a very rare case of Blastomycosis dermatitidis mastoiditis with extension into the retromastoid soft tissue and surrounding muscle. Blastomycosis dermatitidis is a dimorphic fungus of endemic areas which classically infiltrates the lungs; however, dissemination presenting as otomastoiditis is exceedingly rare. The patient was an immunocompetent 27-year-old male with no significant preexisting health conditions. He had significant work exposure to dust and soil and was referred to our department for evaluation of otalgia with headaches, hearing loss, and in

Phonological Awareness Skills in Children With Early and Late Cochlear Implantation: Effects of Task and Phonological Unit.

Purpose Phonological awareness (PA) skills are critical for spoken language acquisition and literacy. PA manifests in various skills that can be identified based on task performance and speech sound unit size. This study compared the PA skills of children with early cochlear implantation (E-CI), children with late cochlear implantation (L-CI), and children with typical hearing (TH) in relation to task and phonological unit. It also attempted to identify the significant predictors of PA skills in each CI and TH group. Method Twenty children with E-CI, 20 children with L-CI, and 20 children with

Comparing spontaneous and stimulus frequency otoacoustic emissions in mice with tectorial membrane defects.

The global standing-wave model for generation of spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SOAEs) suggests that they are amplitude-stabilized standing waves and that the spacing between SOAEs corresponds to the interval over which the phase changes by one cycle as determined from the phase-gradient delays of stimulus frequency otoacoustic emissions (SFOAEs). Because data characterizing the relationship between spontaneous and evoked emissions in nonhuman mammals are limited, we examined SOAEs and SFOAEs in tectorial membrane (TM) mutants and their controls. Computations indicate that the spacing betw

Interchangeability of three different methods of calculating Pure Tone Average in patients with vestibular schwannoma to assess the risk of surgery-related hearing loss.

<b>Background:</b> Patients with vestibular schwannoma (VS) most commonly present with hearing threshold reduction for high frequencies and a falling type of audiometric curve. However, it is doubtful whether all Pure Tone Averages described in the literature characterize patients with VS correctly, as the type of PTA which comprises higher frequencies may be more appropriate for hearing status assessment in those patients. <br><b>Aim:</b> The aim of this study was to analyze 3 common methods of calculating Pure Tone Averages (PTA1 - 500, 1000, 2000 and 3000 Hz; P

[Conductive hearing loss with a normal eardrum].

Conductive hearing loss with a normal eardrum. Conductive hearing loss with a normal eardrum is defined by a hearing loss in in relation to a disturbance in the transmission of sound waves from a normal eardrum to an intact cochlear nerve. The interest in diagnosing these kinds of hearing loss is due on the one hand to their high frequency, on the other hand to the socio-professional repercussions that they can induce and finally to the fact that a large part of them are accessible to surgical treatment or, hearing aid. The CT-scan contributes to the diagnostic orientation and the preoperative

Auditory rehabilitation in neurofibromatosis type 2: a case for cochlear implantation.

Cochlear implantation has a limited but definite role in the rehabilitation of certain neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) patients. The presence of a dead ear either before, or after, tumour removal does not necessarily imply loss of function in the eighth nerve; in some instances the hearing loss will be cochlear. Promontory or round window electrical stimulation may help to identify those individuals with surviving eighth nerve function. In such patients multichannel cochlear implantation promises a better level of audition than the auditory brain stem implant. This paper highlights such a case
