Prevalence of Depression and Anxiety Disorders and Associated Psychosocial Risk Factors Among Pregnant Women Attending an Outpatient Clinic at a Tertiary Care Hospital.

Background Pregnancy is a period of significant biological and psychosocial change that may predispose women to mental health disorders. Antenatal depression and anxiety are increasingly recognized as important public health concerns due to their adverse impact on maternal well-being, pregnancy outcomes, and offspring development. Despite this, these conditions often remain underdiagnosed in routine antenatal care, particularly in low- and middle-income settings. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of depressive and anxiety disorders among pregnant women attending a tertiary care outp

Mental health interventions for carers of individuals with eating disorders: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials assessing efficacy on anxiety and depressive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Carers of individuals with eating disorders (EDs) often experience high levels of psychological distress, which can lead to anxiety and depressive symptoms. While several interventions have been developed to support carers, the effectiveness on their mental health remains unclear. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing mental health interventions for carers of individuals with EDs, with anxiety and depressive symptoms defined as outcomes of interest. Searches were performed across major electronic databases up to 31 October 2025.

Mediating role of sleep disorders in the association between depression and infertility: A cross-sectional study using the National Health and nutrition examination survey.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders and depression are prevalent conditions that can affect reproductive health. However, the complex interplay between these factors and infertility remains poorly understood, particularly the potential mediating role of sleep disorders in the association between depression and infertility. METHODS: We analyzed data from 2068 female participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), including 244 women with self-reported infertility. Multivariable regression analyses examined associations between depression, sleep disorders, and infertility

The gut-brain axis as a therapeutic target in alcohol use disorder: dietary fiber, intestinal barrier integrity, and neuroinflammatory mechanisms underlying depression.

Alcohol use disorder is frequently accompanied by major depressive disorder, yet the biological mechanisms linking both conditions remain incompletely understood. Increasing evidence suggests that chronic alcohol consumption disrupts the gut-brain axis by damaging intestinal tight junctions and inducing gut dysbiosis characterized by depletion of short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria. The resulting impairment of intestinal barrier integrity may facilitate the translocation of bacterial lipopolysaccharide, promoting peripheral and central neuroinflammation through Toll-like receptor 4-depen…

Assessment of glymphatic system function using DTI-ALPS in depressive disorders: a study of its correlation with clinical features and plasma GFAP levels.

BACKGROUND: The function of the glymphatic system (GS) in patients with depressive disorders (DDs), as well as its relationship with clinical characteristics and plasma glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) levels, remains poorly understood. In this study, the Diffusion Tensor Imaging-Analysis along the Perivascular Space (DTI-ALPS) method was applied to assess glymphatic function in individuals with DDs. Correlations between the DTI-ALPS index, clinical features of DDs, and plasma GFAP concentrations were analyzed to explore potential underlying mechanisms of DDs. METHODS: Between August 20…

Dynamic and static changes of amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations associated with childhood trauma in youth major depression disorder patients with atypical features.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) with atypical features often characterized with increased misdiagnosis and poor response to standard treatment. This research explores the neurobiological mechanisms underlying atypical depression (AD) by examining spontaneous brain activity and childhood trauma contrasting these findings with non-atypical depression (NAD). METHODS: A total 93 youth patients with MDD (31 with AD and 62 NAD) and 52 healthy controls (HCs) were studied using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We employed the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuati…

Insomnia Symptoms Co-Fluctuate With Depression and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms From Pre- To 10 Years Post-Deployment in Military Personnel.

Insomnia symptoms are strongly associated with mental health problems such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression in uniformed personnel, and are often considered a risk factor for adverse post-deployment outcomes. However, the directionality of these relationships remains unclear. This study aimed to disentangle the longitudinal associations between insomnia, PTSD and depression symptoms from pre-deployment up to 10 years post-deployment in military personnel. Data were drawn from the Dutch PRISMO cohort (N = 846 deployed participants) across six timepoints: pre-deployment an

Age and Sex as Moderators of Sleep Architecture in Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, and Unipolar Depression: A Case-Control Polysomnographic Systematic Review and Meta-Regression.

Sleep architecture alterations have been shown in major psychiatric disorders, but the contribution of demographic factors to between-study heterogeneity remains insufficiently characterized. This study reports a transdiagnostic systematic review and meta-regression of case-control polysomnographic studies comparing schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and unipolar depression with healthy controls. The factors age and sex as possible moderators across harmonized case-control polysomnographic studies have been analyzed. Eligible studies reported diagnostic criteria, treatment status, age, and sex.

Individual Participant Data Meta-Analysis Identifies Risk Factors for Acute and Persistent Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Depression Symptoms Following Trauma.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are common sequelae to trauma. Identifying individuals at risk for persistent symptomology allows for targeted interventions. METHODS: We conducted an individual participant data meta-analysis (IPD-MA) by pooling data from five prospective emergency room and critical care unit studies (N participants = 2571) to examine risk factors for PTSD and MDD. We derived harmonized measures of PTSD and MDD in the acute period (0-60 days) following a traumatic event and in the follow-up persistent period (122-456 days). …

Mood Monitoring, Mood Tracking, and Ambulatory Assessment Interventions in Depression and Bipolar Disorder: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

BACKGROUND: Mood monitoring is widely used by people with depression and bipolar disorder (BD) to prevent relapse and improve insight into their condition, but it is unclear if these interventions have an impact on symptoms and for whom. As the capacity for passive mood monitoring increases, it is vital to improve our understanding of frequent mood assessment. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis assessed the effect of mood monitoring interventions in people with depression and BD to decrease relapse risk and symptoms of depression and mania. METHODS: We conducted a systematic

Infraslow Closed-Loop Brain Training for Anxiety and Depression (ISAD): A pilot randomised, sham-controlled trial in adult females with internalizing disorders.

INTRODUCTION: The core resting-state networks (RSNs) have been shown to be dysfunctional in individuals with internalizing disorders (IDs; e.g., anxiety, depression). Source-localised, closed-loop brain training of infraslow (≤ 0.1 Hz) EEG signals may have the potential to reduce symptoms associated with IDs and restore normal core RSN function. METHODS: We conducted a pilot randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled, parallel-group (3-arm) trial of infraslow neurofeedback (ISF-NFB) in adult females (n = 60) with IDs. Primary endpoints, which included the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale

Multi-sector determinants of implementation and sustainment for non-specialist treatment of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder in Kenya: a concept mapping study.

BACKGROUND: The global shortage of trained mental health workers disproportionately impacts mental health care access in low- and middle-income countries. In Kenya, effective strategies are needed to scale-up the workforce to meet the demand for depression and post-traumatic stress disorder treatment. Task-shifting - delegating specific tasks to non-specialist workers - is one workforce expansion approach. However, non-specialist workers remain underutilized in Kenya due to a paucity of research on how to scale-up and sustain such service models. METHODS: Purposive sampling was used to recrui
