INTRODUCTION: Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) can cause cardiovascular manifestations including myocardial injury and thromboembolic events.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report a case of a 27-year-old female with dilated cardiomyopathy, right atrial and biventricular thrombi infected with COVID-19.
DISCUSSION: There are several complex coagulation abnormalities in COVID-19 patients that have been suggested to create a hypercoagulable state. Evidence have shown that endothelial injury potentially leading to thromboembolic events is caused by direct invasion of endothelial cell by SARS-CoV-2 and co

BACKGROUND: The multiple beneficial effects of sacubitril/valsartan in the treatment of heart failure with reduced ejection fraction are vastly known, but still no or few mentions have been made regarding its effects on endothelial dysfunction and arterial stiffness.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: To understand more deeply if sacubitril/valsartan may have a role on endothelial function and arterial stiffness, 15 patients with dilated cardiomyopathy with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) were evaluated through transthoracic echocardiography, peripheral arterial tonometry (EndoPAT®) and

RBM20 is one of the genes predisposing to dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Variants in the RS domain have been reported in many DCM patients, but the pathogenicity of variants within the RNA-recognition motif remains unknown. Two human patients with the I536T-RBM20 variant without an apparent DCM phenotype were identified in sudden death cohorts. A splicing reporter assay was performed, and an I538T knock-in mouse model (Rbm20I538T) was generated to determine the significance of this variant. The reporter assay demonstrated that the human I536T variant affected the TTN splicing pattern compared t

INTRODUCTION: Erosive pustular dermatosis of the scalp (EPDS) is an inflammatory scalp condition that usually affects the elderly, while only few cases have been reported in childhood. In children, it may mimic fungal or bacterial infections, especially kerion.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the usefulness of trichoscopy as a supportive diagnostic tool in 2 cases of pediatric EPDS.
DISCUSSION: Clinical distinction between EPDS and different types of alopecia in children is difficult, with a significant likelihood of diagnostic errors and delay in therapy. Trichoscopy may provide a noninvasiv

Background Studies over the past 15 years have demonstrated that a considerable number of patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) who died from sudden cardiac death (SCD) had a left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction (LVEF) of 35% or higher. Purpose To identify clinical and cardiac MRI risk factors for adverse events in patients with DCM and LVEF of 35% or higher. Materials and Methods In this retrospective study, consecutive patients with DCM and LVEF of 35% or higher who underwent cardiac MRI between January 2010 and December 2017 were included. The primary end point was a composite of SC

The etiologies and pathogenesis of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) with heart failure (HF) remain to be defined. Thus, exploring specific diagnosis biomarkers and mechanisms is urgently needed to improve this situation. In this study, three gene expression profiling datasets (GSE29819, GSE21610, GSE17800) and one single-cell RNA sequencing dataset (GSE95140) were obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. GSE29819 and GSE21610 were combined into the training group, while GSE17800 was the test group. We used the weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) and identified fif

BACKGROUND: The clinical course of acute myocarditis ranges from the occurrence of a few symptoms to the development of fatal fulminant myocarditis. Specifically, fulminant myocarditis causes clinical deterioration very rapidly and aggressively. The long-term prognosis of myocarditis is varied, and it fully recovers without leaving any special complications. However, even after recovery, heart failure may occur and eventually progress to dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), which causes serious left ventricular dysfunction. In the case of follow-up observation, no clear guidelines have been establish

A 52-year-old man was transported via an ambulance because of syncope and the passage of tarry stools, which had been noted the previous day. He was diagnosed with upper gastrointestinal bleeding from a gastric ulcer and underwent endoscopic hemostasis. Prior to endoscopy, abdominal computerized tomography performed for gastrointestinal bleeding revealed pancreatic duct dilation. After discharge, abdominal imaging revealed a strongly enhancing tumor (5 mm) with caudal pancreatic duct dilation. Endoscopic retrograde pancreatography revealed that the main pancreatic duct was interrupted at the b

We investigated the effects of cell therapy on local mechanical dyssynchrony (LMD) in patients with nonischemic dilated cardiomyopathy (NICM). We analyzed electromechanical data of 30 NICM patients undergoing CD34+ cell transplantation. All patients underwent bone marrow stimulation; CD34+ cells were collected by apheresis and injected transendocardially. At baseline and at 6 months after therapy, we performed electromechanical mapping and measured unipolar voltage (UV) and LMD at cell injection sites. LMD was defined as a temporal difference between global and segmental peak systolic displace

BACKGROUND: Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a clinically common and refractory disease; however, few cases of dilated cardiomyopathy have been reported in patients with moyamoya diseases treated by combining traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Western medicine, which has a higher risk of rehabilitation.
CASE SUMMARY: A 31-year-old man was admitted due to paroxysmal chest tightness and shortness of breath. He denied a history of DCM, hypertension, diabetes, pericarditis, smoking, and alcohol consumption. On admission, his transesophageal echocardiography (Fig. 1A) showed the larger heart wi

BACKGROUND: Typical late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) patterns in dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) include intramyocardial and subepicardial distribution. However, the ischemic pattern of LGE (subendocardial and transmural) has also been reported in DCM without coronary artery disease (CAD), but its correlates and prognostic significance are still not known. On these bases, this study sought to describe the prevalence and prognostic significance of the ischemic LGE pattern in DCM.
METHODS: A total of 611 DCM patients with available cardiac magnetic resonance were retrospectively analyzed. A compo

Objective Spontaneous mechanical alternans (MA), or pulsus alternans, has been observed in heart failure patients with hypertension or tachycardia for 150 years and is considered a sign of a poor prognosis. However, in some dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) patients with MA, optimal medical therapy (OMT) brings left ventricular reverse remodeling (LVRR), a preferable prognostic indicator. This study examined the probability of LVRR in DCM patients with spontaneous MA and whether or not LVRR can be predicted by the baseline blood pressure or heart rate. Methods We conducted a single-center, retrospe

BACKGROUND: Endothelial dysfunction appears early in the development of cardiovascular disease and is associated with type 2 diabetes. We, therefore, tested the hypothesis that endothelial dysfunction is already present in healthy Chinese adolescent participants at risk of type 2 diabetes and associates with physical activity.
METHODS: We investigated the flow-mediated dilation in 65 first-degree relatives (normal tension, normal glucose tolerance) and 62 age-, sex- and BMI-matched controls without a family history of type 2 diabetes by ultrasound. Physical activity level was assessed using t

Achalasia cardia is an idiopathic esophageal motility disorder. It is rare in children and infrequent in below school-going age groups. The "bird's beak" appearance of the lower esophagus on the esophagogram (barium swallow) is a classical radiological finding in the cases of esophageal Achalasia. The goals of achalasia therapy are symptom relief and improvement of esophageal emptying to prevent megaesophagus. The most effective treatment options are pneumatic dilation and surgical myotomy (Heller's myotomy). Pneumatic dilation is the initial treatment of choice and does not preclude myotomy.

We report here the case of a 92-year-old woman with atrial fibrillation bradycardia in which leadless pacemaker implantation was performed with a difficult delivery of the catheter sheath due to an extremely large right atrium. Using a snare technique with correction of the direction of the force on the catheter toward the right ventricle (RV) can result in successful delivery of the pacemaker catheter and stable placement of the pacemaker system in the RV septum. This specific snare technique has the potential to facilitate leadless pacemaker implantation safely in a severely dilated chamber
