Integration of impulsivity and positive mood to predict risky behavior: development and validation of a measure of positive urgency.

In 3 studies, the authors developed and began to validate a measure of the propensity to act rashly in response to positive affective states … differentiated individuals at risk for problem gambling from those not at risk, and interacted with drinking motives and expectancies as predicted to explain problem drinking behavior. In Study 3, they confirmed the hypothesis that positive urgency differentiated alcoholics from both eating-disordered and control individuals.

Trichloroethylene and dichloroethylene: a critical review of teratogenicity.

Trichloroethylene (TCE) and dichloroethylene (DCE) are high-volume industrial chemicals frequently found as contaminants in public drinking water supplies. The developmental toxicity of both chemicals has been evaluated in laboratory and epidemiologic studies. It has been suggested that TCE and DCE are specific cardiac teratogens and that drinking water contaminated with them increases the risk of congenital heart defects in exposed human populations. In contrast, other laboratory and epidemiologic studies do not find an increase in developmental effects, either in general or specifically affe…

Learning the language of abstinence in addiction treatment: some similarities between relapse-prevention with disulfiram, naltrexone, and other pharmacological antagonists and intensive "immersion" methods of foreign language teaching.

Relapse-prevention (RP) is an educational process. Learning to abstain from alcohol or opiates after years of dependence involves selectivel … ve disorders. Supervised disulfiram aids RP by discouraging alcoholics from responding to real-life drinking cues in the "language" of excessive drinking, requiring them, ab initio, to practice new, alcohol-free responses. Supervised or depot naltrexone acts similarly in opiate dependence. We discuss the concept of antagonist-assisted abstinence.

Problematic substance use, depressive symptoms, and gender in primary care.

This study determined the frequency of problematic substance use and of counseling about drug and alcohol use among 867 women and 320 men who reported symptoms of depression in managed primary care clinics. Seventy-two (8.3 percent) of the women and 61 (19 percent) of the men reported hazardous drinking; 228 (26.3 percent) of the women and 94 (29.4 percent) of the men reported problematic drug use, including use of illicit drugs and misuse of prescription drugs. Only 17 (13.9 percent) of the patients who reported hazardous drinking and 18 (6.6 percent) of those who reported problematic drug us…

Is protection against shigellosis induced by natural infection with Plesiomonas shigelloides?

Shigellosis due to Shigella sonnei is rare among people growing up and living in developing countries; however, infections due to S sonnei becomes more common than those due to S flexneri as societies develop economically. The relation between risk of S sonnei infection and economic development may be explained by the exposure of developing-country populations to Plesiomonas shigelloides. P shigelloides is often found in surface water, and one serotype (serotype 17) possesses a cell-wall lipopolysaccharide identical to that of S sonnei. Thus, exposure to P shigelloides by drinking contaminated…

Validity of an MMPI classification of problem drinker-drivers.

An empirical typology of problem drinker-drivers based on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) was evaluated. Relationships were demonstrated between this typology and several kinds of external criteria: alcoholism symptoms, reasons for drinking, treatment participation and outcome and medical complications. Indicators of typological validity were further evaluated in the context of alternative means of scoring and categorizing MMPI profiles. Relationships of criteria with the drinker-driver typology were generally stronger than with other uses of the MMPI. They were, however…

OBJECTIVE: To understand the health risk behaviors prevalence and influencing factors of Dong and Bai Nationality adolescents in rural of Wuling mountainous area. METHODS: By the method of layered, random and total sampling, 2176 Dong and Bai Nationality adolescents were recruited from September to Octomber 2016 in rural of Wuling mountainous area. The investigation was conducted based on " The scale and evaluation method of health related/risk behaviors for adolescents in China". To analyze the behaviors on dietary bias, lack of physical exercise, suicidal ideation, smoking, drinking and int…

Barriers and Facilitators to implementation of the Free Water Protocol in the Acute Stroke Unit Setting: A Mixed Methods Systematic Review.

Free water protocols (FWP) give patients at risk of aspiration the option to drink water between meals. Evidence is lacking about their use in acute stroke care. This systematic review evaluated the literature about barriers and facilitators to FWP implementation in acute stroke unit settings. Electronic databases and grey literature sources were systematically searched, eligible studies were critically appraised, and data extracted and mapped onto the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR). The results are presented in a narrative synthesis. Five studies were identified for

Factors associated with phosphatidylethanol (PEth) sensitivity for detecting unhealthy alcohol use: An individual patient data meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Objective measurement of alcohol consumption is important for clinical care and research. Adjusting for self-reported alcohol use, we conducted an individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis to examine factors associated with the sensitivity of phosphatidylethanol (PEth), an alcohol metabolite, among persons self-reporting unhealthy alcohol consumption. METHODS: We identified 21 eligible studies and obtained 4073 observations from 3085 participants with Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Consumption (AUDIT-C) positive scores (≥3 for women and ≥4 for men) and PEth measur

Alcohol consumption as a cause of cancer.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: There is increasing research evidence about the causal role of alcohol in cancer, accompanied by unclear and conflictin … epidemiological studies also commonly report protection from cardiovascular disease associated with drinking but a high level of scepticism regarding these findings is now warranted. CONCLUSIONS: There is strong evidence that alcohol causes cancer at seven sites in the body and probably others. Current estimates suggest that alcohol-attributable cancers a …

Pharmacological treatments for psychosis-related polydipsia.

BACKGROUND: Polydipsia is the intake of more than three litres of fluids per day. Primary polydipsia occurs when excessive drinking cannot be explained by an identified medical condition, and is not secondary to polyuria. The prevalence of this problem in psychiatric inpatients has been estimated at between 6 and 17%. It can hinder standard care and be a highly disabling, even life-threatening condition. OBJECTIVES: To review the effect of pharmacological interventions for the treatment of psychosis-related polydipsia. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Schizophrenia Group's Register …

[Alcohol Use and Cancer Risk].

Alcohol use is one of the most important and potentially modifiable risk factors for cancer in Germany. The more and the longer a person drinks, the higher the risk of cancer. Even modest use of alcohol may increase cancer risk. Statistically, every German drinks more than 100 gram of alcohol per week; this amount is currently considered to be the limit of low-risk use. Alcohol is causally associated with oropharyngeal and larynx cancer, esophageal squamous cell cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, breast cancer, and colorectal cancer. People with long-term risky alcohol use should be encouraged

The genetic basis of delay discounting and its genetic relationship to alcohol dependence.

Delay discounting is steeper for individuals who drink heavily or are alcohol dependent, but the reasons for this are unclear. Given the substantial genetic component for alcohol dependence it is not unreasonable to ask whether discounting and alcohol dependence have a genetic relationship. For there to be a genetic relationship, delay discounting must have a genetic component (heritability). A review of the human and animal literature suggests that this is the case. Other literature examining whether discounting is a correlated phenotype in individuals who are genetically predisposed to drink
