Motivated by the occurrence of a case of suspected tick-borne meningoencephalitis (TBE) in a forestry worker of the Delnice Forestry Enterprise, 139 sera samples were collected from his co-workers, for TBE-specific IgG antibody testing. PURPOSE: To investigate pathogenesis underlying endogenous uveitis, macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) was quantified in sera of patients.
METHODS: Sera were obtained from the 55 patients with uveitis (24 with Behçet's disease; 9 with Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada's [VKH] disease; 22 with sarcoidosis) and 58 healthy control subjects. MIF levels were determined by a human MIF enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Thus, monoclonal antibody D8/17, found to be 100% specific for rheumatic fever/rheumatic heart disease (RF/RHD) patients from New York, identified only 62% to 68% in the north Indian population.

The humoral immune response of sheep to wohlfahrtiosis was studied. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was developed to compare four different types of antigens obtained from the third-stage larvae of Wohlfahrtia magnifica. The antigen prepared from salivary glands detected a humoral response in all 35 infested sheep and was more specific in the ELISA than cuticular, intestinal or whole larval antigens. The level of the humoral response in sheep to wohlfahrtiosis differed according to the location of the wounds.

The prevalence of Loa loa infections in non-endemic areas such as Korea is very low, even though it is quite common in the endemic regions of West and Central Africa. We describe a patient who presented with temporary localized edema (classical Calabar swellings) after travelling to Cameroon and in whom the diagnosis of loiasis was made by ELISA. This is the second reported case of loiasis in Korea. As international travel is becoming more frequent, Loa loa infection should be considered in the differential diagnosis for patients with eosinophilia and Calabar swellings in Korea.
