As revealed in the present survey, during the last 3 years, against a background of decreased number of registered cases of acute hepatitis B (HB) and acute hepatitis C (HC), an increase in the proportion of patients with the chronic forms of these diseases was observed. The incidence rate of carriership of hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C viruses (HCV) is many times greater than morbidity rates in acute and chronic forms of the disease. In the summer of 2003 a community-acquired outbreak of Legionella pneumophila occurred in Rome, Italy. Three molecular typing methods, pulse-field gel electrophoresis, amplified fragment length polymorphism analysis, and sequence-based typing (SBT), were used to establish the clonal correlation among the isolates of the epidemic cluster. By comparison of the methods, SBT was the most rapid and the easiest to perform and provided unambiguous results.

The registered number of cases of early infectious syphilis and of (ano)genital gonorrhoea among the attendees of the outpatient clinic for sexually transmitted diseases of the Amsterdam municipal health service shows a strong increase for both diagnoses in the period 1990-2001, notably in the last few years. Nearly all of this increase is accounted for by homosexual men. Syphilis increased mostly among men aged 35 years and over, gonorrhoea mostly among younger men. The population of older men also showed a distinct increase since 1997 in HIV incidence.

There is compelling evidence that both human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) types emerged from two dissimilar simian immunodeficiency viruses (SIVs) in separate geographical regions of Africa. OBJECTIVES: This study assessed trends in HIV risk behaviors among injection drug users in New York City from 1990 to 1997.
METHODS: Injection drug users were recruited continuously from a large drug detoxification treatment program (N = 2588) and a research storefront located in a high-drug-use area (N = 2701). Two strains of West Nile virus LEIV 27889 Vig and Ast 986 were isolated from the brain of a dead subject and from the blood of a patient, respectively, during an outbreak of serous meningitis and meningoencephalitis in July-September, 1999, in the Volgograd region, Krasnodar territory, and Astrakhan region. These strains reacted with convalescent sera in hemagglutination inhibition test, which proves their etiological role in this outbreak.

An echovirus 11' (prime) virus caused an epidemic in Hungary in 1989. The leading clinical form of the diseases was myocarditis.
