Treatment of zygomatic fractures: a follow-up study of 105 patients.

One hundred and five patients with zygomatic fractures are presented. The main cause of the fracture was violence, followed by traffic accidents, fall and sport. In more than 25% of the cases, the fractures were accompanied by another fracture of the facial skeleton, viz maxillary, mandibular and nasal fractures. In severe cases of traffic accidents there were associated fractures in more than half of the cases. The follow-up study showed visible asymmetry of the face in 17 patients and sensory disturbances in 37 patients. We did not find the X-ray subdivision by Knight & North useful in the e

[The assessment results of patients with neurootological symptoms (author's transl)].

Neurootological symptoms in 710 patients were assessed by otorhinolaryngological examination, audiometry, vestibulometry, electroencephalography, echoencephalogram, ophthalmological and neurological examination, skull, temporal bone and cervical spine X-rays, electrocardiography, and lumbar puncture. Where abnormal findings occurred further assessments such as brain-scan, vertebral angiography, Xenon clearance and computerized axial tomography were done. Analysis of the case histories showed that there were 45 patients with organic lesions of the brain, 79 with cerebrovascular disease, 68 with

[Facial and head pain from the otorhinolaryngologist's point of view (author's transl)].

From the otolaryngologist's point of view, there are multiple causes for the frequent symptom of facial and head pain: headaches due to ear diseases: pain extending to the ear region, with special regard to "referred otalgia" involving the cranail nerves V, IX, X; facial pain due to temporomandibular dysfunction; rhinological causes of facial and head pain, including posttraumatic trigeminal neuralgia and "facial sympathalgies"; the syndrome of the elongated styloid process. The diagnosis and therapy of the "typical" ENT diseases is not described in detail since the paper deals mainly with les

[Computerized tomography of the facial skeleton (part II). Pathological changes (author's transl)].

The value and main task of computerized tomography in the diagnosis of benign and malignant processes in the middle and upper facial skeleton lies in its accurate demonstration of the extent of the disease; this is important in relation to the planning of treatment, prognosis and to other complementary procedures. CT is a new and potent method for the TNM classification of tumours of the nose, paransal sinuses and nasal pharynx. The ability of the CT to demonstrate deeply situated structures in the face, without disturbing overlying shadows, makes precise staging of deep tumours possible, eg.

Victims of a rabid wolf in india: effect of severity and location of bites on development of rabies.

A rabid wolf attacked 12 humans and six animals in six villages in the course of a day before it was surrounded and killed. Of the 12 human victims, three had severe wounds to the face and head, five had severe lacerations, two had less severe wounds on the trunk and limbs, and two had minor wounds or scratches. Nine of these victims received antirabies treatment with Semple vaccine (preceded by immune serum in one case). No persons with trunk and limb bites died. All three patients with head wounds died. One of these patients received vaccine and serum, one received vaccine, and the third had

Peripheral trigeminal branch stimulation for refractory facial pain: A single-center experience.

OBJECTIVE: Facial pain refractory to medical treatments may benefit from neurosurgical interventions. Only a few studies have reported on the efficacy of peripheral trigeminal stimulation and more specifically supraorbital nerve (SON) and infraorbital nerve (ION) stimulation for the treatment of facial pain. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In the present study, we identified all patients at our institution who underwent SON and/or ION stimulation for treatment of facial pain due to post-herpetic, traumatic or idiopathic etiology. Relevant pre and post-operative outcomes were analyzed. RESULTS: We iden

Pterional keyhole approach to middle cerebral artery aneurysms through an outer canthal skin incision.

OBJECT: The supraorbital keyhole approach via an eyebrow skin incision provides a method for the minimally invasive clipping of aneurysms located in the circle of Willis, but has disadvantages for aneurysms located in the lateral Sylvian fissure. The pterional keyhole minicraniotomy via an outer canthal skin incision is proposed for the clipping of unruptured aneurysms of the middle cerebral artery (MCA). METHODS: The procedure consists of a 35-mm outer canthal skin incision, partial temporal muscle dissection restricted in the pterion, a 20-25-mm keyhole minicraniotomy, and a 15-20-mm dural

Facial fractures in children.

Facial trauma in children differs from adults. The growing facial skeleton presents several challenges to the reconstructive surgeon. A thorough understanding of the patterns of facial growth and development is needed to form an individualized treatment strategy. A proper diagnosis must be made and treatment options weighed against the risk of causing further harm to facial development. This article focuses on the management of facial fractures in children. Discussed are common fracture patterns based on the development of the facial structure, initial management, diagnostic strategies, new co

The Utility of Polyether-Ether-Ketone Implants Adjacent to Sinus Cavities After Craniofacial Trauma.

PURPOSE: Polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) implants have become increasingly popular for use in reconstructive procedures. It is imperative to understand the consequences of using this biomaterial in anatomic sites that can pose a risk of infection. Specifically, the use of PEEK in paranasal sinus cavity reconstruction is not well documented. This study examined postoperative complications, namely surgical site infection and implant loss, in patients who underwent paranasal sinus cavity reconstruction using PEEK implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study is a single-center case series. Patients

Facial Nerve Function and Quality of Resection in Large and Giant Vestibular Schwannomas Surgery Operated By Retrosigmoid Transmeatal Approach in Semi-sitting Position with Intraoperative Facial Nerve Monitoring.

INTRODUCTION: Large and giant vestibular schwannomas pose a real problem in their management. The preservation of facial nerve function may limit tumor resection despite the use of intraoperative monitoring of the facial nerve. In Algeria, vestibular schwannomas represent 5% of all intracranial tumors operated on, 80.5% of which are large or giant. METHODS: From January 2010 to December 2015, 151 large and giant vestibular schwannomas were operated in our department. Tumor diameter was between 30 and 60 mm. The most common presenting symptom was hearing loss, which was observed in 41.66% of a

Less invasive transjugular approach with Fallopian bridge technique for facial nerve protection and hearing preservation in surgery of glomus jugulare tumors.

For the past three decades, surgery of glomus jugulare tumors (GJTs) has been characterized by extensive combined head and neck, neuro-otologic, and neurosurgical approaches. In recent years, the authors have modified the operative technique to a less invasive approach for preservation of cranial nerves while achieving satisfactory tumor resection. We evaluated and compared the clinical outcomes of our current less invasive approach with our previous more extensive procedures. The clinical records of 39 cases of GJT surgically treated between 1992 and 2011 were retrospectively reviewed. The le

Comparison of various approaches for the treatment of fractures of the mandibular condylar process.

UNLABELLED: Fractures of the mandibular condyle process are the most common fractures of the lower jaw. Unfortunately, the type of treatment is still a matter of debate. PURPOSE: The aim of this investigation was to compare the outcome of different treatment approaches regarding function and surgical side-effects. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 111 fractures of the mandibular condyle representing all types according to the classification of Spiessl and Schroll were included. Both closed reduction (CR) and open reduction with internal fixation (ORIF) including the retromandibular/transparotid, submand

Current opinion in otolaryngology: update on vascular injuries in craniomaxillofacial fractures.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The primary purpose of this chapter is to define current recommendations for vascular work-up of patients with craniomaxillofacial (CMF) trauma with emphasis on imaging to include intraoperative fluorescence, angiography, and surgical exploration. The second goal is to review current management recommendations for observation versus surgical exploration based on the neck zones of injury. RECENT FINDINGS: Over the past two decades, endovascular techniques are increasingly utilized, particularly in zones I and III of the neck. Additionally, modern advances in radiographic tec
