Bloom syndrome (BS) is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder caused by variants in the BLM gene. BS is characterized by distinct facial features, elongated limbs, and various dermatological complications including photosensitivity, poikiloderma, and telangiectatic erythema. The BLM gene encodes a RecQ helicase critical for genome maintenance, stability, and repair, and a deficiency in functional BLM protein leads to genomic instability and high predisposition to various types of cancers, particularly hematological and gastrointestinal malignancies. Here, we report a case of BS with a previou

Firearm injuries can result in varying degrees of trauma, depending on factors such as the type of firearm, range, and wound location. This case report presents the role of X-ray imaging in detecting a projectile causing fatal penetrating abdominal trauma in a 45-year-old male. The patient was found with a gunshot wound in his abdomen, and despite medical interventions, he succumbed to his injuries. X-ray imaging revealed a hyper-dense area resembling a bullet lodged in the abdominal cavity. Autopsy confirmed a close-range gunshot with significant internal damage to the peritoneum, mesentery,

A 63-year-old woman with a history of acute myeloid leukemia followed by stem cell transplantation presented with acute heart failure. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed a preserved left ventricular ejection fraction with severe ventricular hypertrophy and signs of elevated filling pressures indicating infiltrative cardiomyopathy. She died from cardiac arrest due to cardiogenic shock. The autopsy revealed an enlarged heart with a fish-flesh appearance. Here, we describe a rare case of a myeloid sarcoma of the heart.

Groove pancreatic cancer is a malignant tumor that originates from the groove between the pancreas, duodenum, and bile duct. Groove pancreatic cancer shares similarities with groove pancreatitis in terms of clinical symptoms and imaging findings, which often makes it difficult to distinguish between the two diseases. We describe the case of a patient with a cystic lesion associated with groove pancreatic cancer. A 54-year-old male patient presented with sudden vomiting, hematemesis, and persistent epigastric pain. Enhanced computed tomography revealed a hypoenhanced, ill-defined lesion extendi

Gastroduodenal perforation commonly due to spontaneous perforation of a pre-existing peptic ulcer is a surgical emergency. On laparotomy, approximately 60%-70% perforations are duodenal and 15%-20% gastric. The most prevalent etiology are Helicobacter pylori infection in 65%-70% and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) abuse in 30%-50% cases depending on the prevalence of H. pylori infection. We report here the autopsy findings in a 29-year-old male who collapsed suddenly in the emergency room of our hospital after a bout of massive hematemesis.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is classified as one of the skin-related neglected tropical diseases by the WHO. There have been limited reports of CL in Côte d'Ivoire, with fewer than 20 cases reported from Côte d'Ivoire in the literature since 1967, when it was first identified. Here, we report a case of CL originating in Côte d'Ivoire that we diagnosed during our active case finding activity in the Zounan Hounien District. The patient, a 15-year-old male, presented with multiple noninflammatory skin lesions on the face and trunk that had progressed from nodular to ulcerated lesions over the pr

BACKGROUND Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a common herpesvirus that often causes asymptomatic or mild infections. In immunocompromised patients, CMV can lead to severe complications, including Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) and encephalitis. While these conditions have been described in the immunocompetent population, simultaneous presentation of CMV-associated GBS and encephalitis in such individuals has not been previously reported. CASE REPORT We present a case of a 58-year-old woman with poorly controlled diabetes who developed concurrent GBS and encephalitis following a CMV infection. The patien

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a plasma B-cell malignancy characterized by immune dysfunction, with infection representing a major complication. Bacteria, including Streptococcus pneumoniae, are common pathogens in patients with MM, but reports on infections with nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) have been limited. We herein report a case of disseminated NTM infection in a patient with MM undergoing treatment with immunomodulatory drugs. At the diagnosis, the patient showed lymphocytopenia and was treated with clarithromycin, rifampicin, and ethambutol; however, culture positivity persisted, and the

Tuberculosis (TB) is a significant global health challenge, particularly in developing countries. One rare complication of TB is vasculitis, involving inflammation of the blood vessels by Mycobacterium tuberculosis TB vasculitis typically results from the haematogenous spread of bacteria to the cerebral vasculature or extension from adjacent tuberculous lesions, such as tuberculomas. The pathogenesis includes direct invasion of vessel walls, leading to inflammation, luminal narrowing, thrombosis and ischaemic brain damage. Lesions usually affect smaller vessels or limited brain regions. This c

Hyperammonemia after lung transplantation is a rare but potentially fatal condition. A 59-year-old male patient affected by pulmonary fibrosis underwent an uncomplicated bilateral lung transplant. Fourteen days after the procedure, the patient developed severe encephalopathy caused by elevated serum ammonia levels. Ureaplasma parvum and Mycoplasma hominis were found on bronchial aspirate and urinary samples as well as on pharyngeal and rectal swabs. Despite the initiation of multimodal therapy, brain damage due to hyperosmolarity was so extensive to evolve into brain death. The autopsy reveale

Angle grinders are one of the most dangerous and frequently used tools in industrial settings. Angle grinder injuries range from superficial cuts to deep penetrating injuries with underlying fracture-dislocation and vascular trauma. The injuries caused by angle grinders mostly involve the head, face, or upper limbs, while the lower limb is an unusual site. The high-speed rotating disc of the angle grinders does not respect anatomical boundaries or structures; therefore, the injuries caused may be disfiguring, permanently incapacitating, or even fatal. We report a fatal case of an angle grinder

This case report describes a fatal case of a young woman with superior sagittal, transverse and sigmoid sinus thrombosis after administration of the ChAdOx1 nCov-19 vaccination. Eleven days post-vaccination she was found unconscious and transferred to the Emergency Department. Blood parameters showed low platelets, and a CT scan showed an extensive left intracranial hemorrhage and the presence of an occlusive thrombus of the superior sagittal sinus. She under-went a craniectomy, but after the intervention, she remained in a comatose state. After a few days, her clinical conditions worsened, an

Patients with cirrhotic liver disease are in a state of fluctuating hemostatic balance. Hepatic synthetic dysfunction is commonly complicated by coagulation disorders that constitute an important parameter of most prognostic scores. The dominant feature of this dysfunction is bleeding tendencies, but cirrhotic patients may also exhibit inappropriate clotting and pro-coagulation placing them at risk for thromboembolism. We present a case of perioperative fatal pulmonary embolism in an 8-year-old patient with biliary cirrhosis secondary to drug-induced vanishing bile duct syndrome undergoing a d

BACKGROUND: Canine lymphoma is one of the most frequently occurring malignant neoplasms in dogs. Anthracycline-based chemotherapy for the treatment of canine lymphoma is very effective; however, there is not enough evidence for the development of cardiac toxicity using several anthracyclines as chemotherapeutic agents.
CASE DESCRIPTION: An 8-year-old, castrated, mixed-breed dog was diagnosed with multicentric lymphoma and received multi-agent chemotherapy. Complete remission was achieved, but the patient had a relapse of lymphoma. After third-line chemotherapy with epirubicin, the patient was

INTRODUCTION: Amyloidosis derived from leukocyte chemotactic factor 2 (ALECT2) may be associated with slowly progressive renal failure that is clinically unsuspected at the time of transplantation. While this is typically clinically insignificant, we report a case with extensive systemic ALECT2 amyloidosis that also involved the myocardium, contributing to perioperative death post renal transplantation.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 72-year-old Hispanic woman presented for renal transplantation due to end-stage renal disease secondary to hypertension. She was bradycardic on admission. Cardiac workup pr
