CT, MRI, and 18F-FDG PET/CT Findings in Untreated Pulmonary and Hepatic B-Cell Lymphoma of Mucosa-Associated Lymphoid Tissue (MALT) Over a Five-Year Period: A Case Report.

Imaging findings of hepatic lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) have been rarely reported before. We present the computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/CT findings in a patient with untreated pulmonary and hepatic MALT lymphoma over a 5-year period. On the 1st abdominal MRI scan, the hepatic MALT lymphoma showed multiple hepatic subcapsular masses. On FDG PET/CT, these hepatic tumors showed hypodenisty with FDG uptake similar to the liver on early PET images, and higher than liver

Immunohistochemical studies and fluorodeoxyglucose uptake on positron emission tomography in pharyngeal cancer for predicting radiotherapy-based treatment outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: This study correlated immunohistochemical studies with fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake on positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) and identified prognostic factors for radiotherapy (RT)-based treatment outcomes in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the oropharynx and hypopharynx. METHODS: Genomic data from pre-treatment biopsy specimens (Glut1, CAIX, VEGF, HIF-1α, EGFR, Ki-67, Bcl-2, CLAUDIN-4, YAP-1, c-Met and p16) of 76 patients were analysed using tissue microarrays. FDG uptake was evaluated using the maximum standardised uptake value (SUVmax), metabolic

The Value of PET/CT in Detecting Bone Marrow Involvement in Patients With Follicular Lymphoma.

Follicular lymphoma (FL) is the 2nd most common type of lymphoma diagnosed in the Western World. Bone marrow (BM) involvement is an adverse prognostic factor in FL, routinely assessed by an arbitrary biopsy of the iliac crest. This study was aimed to investigate the role of positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) in identifying BM involvement by FL. In this retrospective, single-center study we reviewed the records of consecutive patients with FL at diagnosis or relapse who underwent staging/restaging workup visual assessment of BM uptake was categorized as either normal, dif

FDG PET-CT imaging of therapeutic response in granulomatous lymphocytic interstitial lung disease (GLILD) in common variable immunodeficiency (CVID).

Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is the most common severe adult primary immunodeficiency and is characterized by a failure to produce antibodies leading to recurrent predominantly sinopulmonary infections. Improvements in the prevention and treatment of infection with immunoglobulin replacement and antibiotics have resulted in malignancy, autoimmune, inflammatory and lymphoproliferative disorders emerging as major clinical challenges in the management of patients who have CVID. In a proportion of CVID patients, inflammation manifests as granulomas that frequently involve the lungs, lym

The total amount of uptake may affect the input function: a theoretic approach about 18F-FDG PET imaging.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this theoretic approach is to establish an analytical relationship between the total amount of uptake (TAU), either pathological or physiological, and the time constants "αi" that describe the time decay of the tracer input function (IF). The proposed approach uses parameters of a (population-based) arterial plasma IF for 18 F-FDG PET imaging. METHODS: A previously published formula provides an estimate of the ratio "p" of 18 F-FDG molecules that are irreversibly trapped in an 18 F-FDG-positive tissue during a whole PET examination, to the number of injected molecules

The relative value of 18F-FDG PET interpretation criteria in generating a probabilistic approach for characterization of pulmonary nodules.

PURPOSE: The evaluation of pulmonary nodules constitutes a large part of PET-CT studies. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the different interpretation criteria in F-fluorodeoxyglucose PET attenuation-corrected and non-attenuation-corrected studies as individual predictors of malignancy in order to propose a useful combination of criteria that can be used in daily practice to classify nodules appropriately. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a historical prospective survey of all consecutive patients referred to our service for the initial assessment of pulmonary nodules and sought the fina

Visual versus semi-quantitative analysis of 18F-FDG-PET in amnestic MCI: an European Alzheimer's Disease Consortium (EADC) project.

We aimed to investigate the accuracy of FDG-PET to detect the Alzheimer's disease (AD) brain glucose hypometabolic pattern in 142 patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and 109 healthy controls. aMCI patients were followed for at least two years or until conversion to dementia. Images were evaluated by means of visual read by either moderately-skilled or expert readers, and by means of a summary metric of AD-like hypometabolism (PALZ score). Seventy-seven patients converted to AD-dementia after 28.6 ± 19.3 months of follow-up. Expert reading was the most accurate tool to detec

Does posterior cingulate hypometabolism result from disconnection or local pathology across preclinical and clinical stages of Alzheimer's disease?

PURPOSE: Posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) hypometabolism as measured by FDG PET is an indicator of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in prodromal stages, such as in mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and has been found to be closely associated with hippocampus atrophy in AD dementia. We studied the effects of local and remote atrophy and of local amyloid load on the PCC metabolic signal in patients with different preclinical and clinical stages of AD. METHODS: We determined the volume of the hippocampus and PCC grey matter based on volumetric MRI scans, PCC amyloid load based on AV45 PET, and PCC metabo

Diagnostic accuracy of contrast-enhanced computed tomography and positron emission tomography with 18-FDG in identifying malignant solitary pulmonary nodules.

Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) and positron emission tomography with 18-FDG (FDG-PET/CT) are used to identify malignant solitary pulmonary nodules. The aim of the study was to evaluate the accuracy of CECT and FDG-PET/CT in diagnosing the etiology of solitary pulmonary nodule (SPN). Eighty patients with newly diagnosed SPN >8 mm were enrolled. The patients were scheduled for either or both, CECT and FDG-PET/CT. The nature of SPN (malignant or benign) was determined either by its pathological examination or radiological criteria. In 71 patients, the etiology of SPN was established

Diagnostic Accuracy of PET/CT-Guided Percutaneous Biopsies for Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumors in Neurofibromatosis Type 1 Patients.

BACKGROUND: Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST) are one of the most frequent causes of death in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). Early detection is crucial because complete surgical resection is the only curative treatment. It has been previously reported that an 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) image with a T/L (Tumor/Liver) SUV max ratio > 1.5 provides a high negative predictive value; however, it is not specific enough to make a NF1-related MPNST diagnosis. A formal proof of malignant transformation from a histo

Accuracy of 18F-FDG PET-CT in triaging lung cancer patients with suspected brain metastases for MRI.

OBJECTIVE: Brain metastases are common in lung cancer. Whole-body 2-deoxy-2-[fluorine-18]fluoro-D-glucose ([F]FDG) PET/computed tomography (CT) is used for general staging, but MRI is the best modality for characterizing brain abnormalities. We aimed to determine whether PET/CT is suitable for selecting patients for MRI on the suspicion of brain metastases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: F-FDG PET/CT (from the vertex to mid-thigh) was performed in 1108 consecutive patients suspected of lung cancer. The final diagnoses were extracted from medical records as lung cancer, with or without brain metastase

The value of 18F-FDG PET in pediatric patients with post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder at initial diagnosis.

PTLD is a serious complication of both solid organ and BMT. This study assessed whether (18) F-FDG PET, when added to CT scan, had additional value in the initial evaluation of PTLD in pediatric patients and whether PET/CT at baseline can reliably guide biopsy. This retrospective study evaluated 34 consecutive pediatric patients (14 female), aged 3.5-17.0 yr (mean age: 9.9 yr, s.d.: 4.9 yr), who had undergone (18) F-FDG PET/CT from May 2007 to December 2014 at initial diagnosis of PTLD following heart (n = 13), lung (n = 8), kidney (n = 4), liver (n = 3), liver and bowel (n = 3), and bone marr

Imaging spectrum of peritoneal carcinomatosis on FDG PET/CT.

Recognition of patterns has always been extremely important in cross-sectional imaging. Peritoneal involvement, both primary and as dissemination from abdominopelvic malignancies, is manifested in different forms, purely because of anatomical complexity. We studied series of peritoneal involvement by (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron-emission tomography/computed tomography fusion imaging and derived patterns of tracer uptake on maximum intensity projection and cross-sectional fusion images.

A follow-up ¹⁸F-FDG brain PET study in a case of Hashimoto's encephalopathy causing drug-resistant status epilepticus treated with plasmapheresis.

Hashimoto's encephalopathy (HE) is a rare neuropsychiatric syndrome associated with antithyroid antibodies. It may have an acute onset (episodes of cerebral ischemia, seizure, and psychosis) or it may present as an indolent form (depression, cognitive decline, myoclonus, tremors, and fluctuations in level of consciousness). We here describe a case of encephalopathy presenting as non-convulsive status epilepticus associated with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), unresponsive to corticosteroid therapy, with improvement after plasma exchange treatment. A previously healthy 19-year-old woman, presente

Distinct pattern of hypometabolism and atrophy in preclinical and predementia Alzheimer's disease.

The goal of the present study was to determine the earliest patterns of hypometabolism and atrophy in the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Stages of AD were defined by positron emission tomography imaging evidence of cortical amyloid pathology in addition to cognitive criteria. Subjects for the study were selected from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative database and divided into 4 groups: cognitively normal (CN) amyloid negative (Aβ-) elderly subjects (n = 36), CN amyloid-positive (Aβ+) (n = 21), early mild cognitive impairment Aβ+ (n = 65), and late mild cognitive impairm
