Development of insula connectivity between ages 12 and 30 revealed by high angular resolution diffusion imaging.

The insula, hidden deep within the Sylvian fissures, has proven difficult to study from a connectivity perspective. Most of our current information on the anatomical connectivity of the insula comes from studies of nonhuman primates and post mortem human dissections. To date, only two neuroimaging studies have successfully examined the connectivity of the insula. Here we examine how the connectivity of the insula develops between ages 12 and 30, in 307 young adolescent and adult subjects scanned with 4-Tesla high angular resolution diffusion imaging (HARDI). The density of fiber connections be

Methylphenidate effects on prefrontal functioning during attentional-capture and response inhibition.

BACKGROUND: Methylphenidate improves motor response inhibition, typically assessed with the stop-signal task. The exact underlying mechanism for this, however, remains unknown. In addition, recent studies highlight that stop signals can have a confounding attentional-capture effect because of their low frequency in the task. In the current study, we assessed the effects of methylphenidate on neural networks of inhibitory control and attentional-capture within the context of two inhibitory control tasks. METHODS: The effects of methylphenidate (40 mg) were assessed using functional magnetic re

Functional brain connectivity and neurocognitive functioning in patients with long-standing type 1 diabetes with and without microvascular complications: a magnetoencephalography study.

OBJECTIVE: Hyperglycemia-associated microvascular disease may underlie changes in cerebral functioning and cognitive performance in patients with type 1 diabetes. Functional connectivity, an indicator of functional interactions and information exchange between brain regions, provides a measure of cerebral functioning. This study addresses functional connectivity and cognition in type 1 diabetic patients with and without proliferative retinopathy, relative to healthy control subjects, using magnetoencephalography. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Fluctuations in magnetic field at scalp for Delta,

[Retention of the skill to perform adaptive bio-control of bioelectrical activity synchronization in the human brain cortex in an argon-nitrogen-oxygen atmosphere with various oxygen content].

The best method to prevent fire incident in space vehicles and other habitable pressurized modules is reduction of atmospheric oxygen concentration (hypoxia). Atmosphere doping with argon may ease tolerance of this hypoxia by humans. Mental performance in Ag-N2-O2 atmosphere with various oxygen content was assed by: retention of the skill to perform adaptive biocontrol (ABC) of bioelectrical activity synchronization in the frontoparietal and parietooccipital cortex (EEG); emotional and mental state (Luscher test); work successfulness (completion of PC games "Miner"and "Tetris"). The Ag-N2-O2 a

The left fusiform area is affected by written frequency of words.

The recent neuroimaging literature gives conflicting evidence about whether the left fusiform gyrus (FG) might recognize words as unitary visual objects. The sensitivity of the left FG to word frequency might provide a neural basis for the orthographic input lexicon theorized by reading models [Patterson, K., Marshall, J. C., & Coltheart, M. (1985). Surface dyslexia: Cognitive and neuropsychological studies of phonological reading. London: Lawrence Erlbaum]. The goal of this study was to investigate the time course and neural correlates of word processing in right-handed readers engaged in an

Developmental delay in children: assessment with proton MR spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The cause of developmental delay frequently is unknown, and clinicians and families can be frustrated by the lack of neuroimaging correlation especially when considering therapeutic options and long-term prognosis. We sought to determine if proton MR spectroscopy can depict abnormalities in patients with developmental delay who have structurally normal brain MR images. METHODS: Children with developmental delay who were older than 2 years (mean age, 5.0 years; range, 3.0-10.0 years) and those aged 2 years or younger (mean age, 1.5 years; range, 0.5-2.0 years) and age-m

Learning face-name associations and the effect of age and performance: a PET activation study.

Learning face-name associations is a complex task to be mastered in every day life that approaches the limits of cognitive capacity in most normal humans. We studied brain activation during face-name learning using positron emission tomography (PET) in 11 normal volunteers. The most intense activation was seen in occipital association cortex (BA 18) bilaterally, also involving lingual and fusiform gyrus (BA 37). In the left hemisphere additional activation were located in inferior temporal gyrus, the inferior part of pre- and postcentral gyrus, and orbitofrontal cortex (BA 11), whereas in the

Spatiotemporal maps of brain activity underlying word generation and their modification during repetition priming.

Spatiotemporal maps of brain activity based on magnetoencephalography were used to observe sequential stages in language processing and their modification during repetition priming. Subjects performed word-stem completion and produced either novel or repeated (primed) words across trials. Activation passes from primary visual cortex (activated at approximately 100 msec after word presentation), to left anteroventral occipital ( approximately 180 msec), to cortex in and near Wernicke's ( approximately 210 msec) and then Broca's ( approximately 370 msec) areas. In addition, a posteroventral temp

Human brain regions involved in direction discrimination.

To obtain further evidence for the functional specialization and task-dependent processing in the human visual system, we used positron emission tomography to compare regional cerebral blood flow in two direction discrimination tasks and four control tasks. The stimulus configuration, which was identical in all tasks, included the motion of a random dot pattern, dimming of a fixation point, and a tone burst. The discrimination tasks comprised the identification of motion direction and successive direction discrimination. The control tasks were motion detection, dimming detection, tone detectio

Assessment of dopamine metabolism in brain of patients with dementia by means of 18F-fluorodopa and PET.

By means of positron emission tomography (PET) and 18F-fluorodopa (FDOPA), a study was initiated to analyze the cerebral dopamine (DA) metabolism of 32 subjects including those with AD/SDAT and vascular dementia (VD, multi-infarct type). A semiautomated irregular ROI drawing routine to identify the striatum was developed that interactively defined the PET threshold pixels referring to the count histograms and location of the corresponding pixels. A comparative study by five examiners showed significant improvement in the area size definition and count linearity particularly for low contrast ob

Gray Matter Differences Between Premature Pubertal Girls With and Without the Reactivation of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal Axis.

The onset of puberty and related hormones exerts significant effects on brain morphometric and psychosocial development. The biological mechanisms underlying how the reactivation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis and puberty-related hormonal maturation sculpts human brain architecture remain elusive. To address this question, 105 premature pubertal girls (age 8-11 years) without menstruation underwent brain structural scanning on a 3T MR system, and the luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH) stimulation test was used to identify the reactivation of the HPG axis. Among the

Reciprocal deterioration of visual and auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia presents V-shaped cognition impairment and widespread reduction in brain gray matter-A pilot study.

Schizophrenic patients often experience visual hallucinations (VHs) and auditory hallucinations (AHs); however, brain aberrations associated with combined VH and AH in schizophrenic patients remains poorly documented. Changes to the brain and cognition during the first episode of untreated schizophrenic patients (FUSCH) with both VHs and AHs (FUSCHVA) were evaluated. One-hundred and fifty-seven patients were enrolled that had FUSCH (1) with VHs but not AHs (FUSCHV), and (2) with AHs but not VHs (FUSCHA), plus FUSCHVA and healthy controls (n = 30). Gray matter volume (GMV) and MATRICS Consensus
