Diarrhea is one of the major public health issues worldwide. Although the infections of individual enteric virus have been extensively studied, elucidation of the coinfection involving multiple viruses is still limited. In this study, we identified the coinfection of human adenovirus (HAdV) and human astrovirus (HAstV) in a child with acute gastroenteritis, analyzed their genotypes and molecular evolution characteristics. The sample was collected and identified using RT-PCR and subjected to whole-genome sequencing on the NovaSeq (Illumina) platform. Obtained sequences were assembled into the c

Tick-borne bacteria of the genera Rickettsia and Coxiella cause several emerging veterinary and human infectious diseases. Ticks of the genus Hyalomma are medically important vectors due to their potential role in the transmission of pathogens to vertebrate hosts. There is an inadequate knowledge on tick-borne Rickettsia spp. and Coxiella spp. in ticks infesting transhumant camels in Pakistan. In this study, we conducted a molecular survey for screening of Rickettsia spp. and Coxiella spp. in ticks infesting camels. Seven hard tick species including Hyalomma dromedarii, Hyalomma anatolicum, Hy

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disorder affecting multiple organs, primarily the lungs and digestive system. Over the years, advancements in medical care and treatments have significantly increased the life expectancy of individuals with CF. However, with this improved longevity, concerns about the potential risk of developing certain types of cancers have arisen. This narrative review aims to explore the relationship between CF, increased life expectancy, and the associated risk for cancers. We discuss the potential mechanisms underlying this risk, including chronic inflammation, immune sy

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a childhood-onset neurobehavioral disorder, often perturbs scholastic achievement and peer-relationship. The pivotal role of glutamate (Glu) in learning and memory indicated an influence of Glu in ADHD, leading to the exploration of Glu in different brain regions of ADHD subjects. We for the first time analyzed GluR genetic variations, Glu levels, as well as expression of Glu receptors (GluR) in the peripheral blood of eastern Indian ADHD probands to find out the relevance of Glu in ADHD prognosis. Turner syndrome (TS) is a common chromosomal disorder resulting from complete or partial absence of the second sex chromosome. Hyperglycemia, ranging from impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) to diabetes mellitus (DM), is common in TS. DM in individuals with TS is associated with an 11-fold excess in mortality. The reasons for the high prevalence of hyperglycemia in TS are not well understood even though this aspect of TS was initially reported almost 60 years ago. Karyotype, as a proxy for X chromosome (Xchr) gene dosage, has been associated with DM risk in TS - however, no specific Xchr genes or

INTRODUCTION: Despite the existence of over 30 anti-seizure medications (ASM), including 20 over the last 30 years, a third of patients with epilepsy remain refractory to treatment, with no disease-modifying or preventive therapies until very recently. The development of new ASMs with new mechanisms of action is therefore critical. Recent clinical trials of new treatments have shifted focus from traditional common epilepsies to rare, genetic epilepsies with known mechanistic targets for treatment and disease-specific animal models.
AREAS COVERED: ASMs in phase 2a/b-3 clinical trials target ch

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex, chronic autoimmune disease, whose etiology includes both genetic and environmental factors. Individual genetic risk factors likely only account for about one-third of observed heritability among individuals with a family history of SLE. A large portion of the remaining risk may be attributable to environmental exposures and gene-environment interactions. This review focuses on SLE risk associated with environmental factors, ranging from chemical and physical environmental exposures to lifestyle behaviors, with the weight of evidence supporting p

A rare disorder in the USA is one that affects <200,000 people, making inherited myopathies rare diseases. Increasing access to genetic testing has been instrumental for the diagnosis of inherited myopathies. Genetic findings, however, require clinical correlation due to variable phenotype, polygenic etiology of certain inherited disorders, and possible co-existing independent neuromuscular disorders. We searched the Mayo Clinic Rochester medical record (2004-2020) to identify adult patients carrying pathogenic variants or likely pathogenic variants in genes causative of myopathies and having

Virtual care in cancer care existed in a limited fashion globally before the COVID-19 pandemic, mostly driven by geographic constraints. The pandemic has required dramatic shifts in health care delivery, including cancer care. We conducted a systematic review of comparative studies evaluating virtual versus in-person care in patients with cancer. Embase, APA PsycInfo, Ovid MEDLINE, and the Cochrane Library were searched for literature from January 2015 to 6 August 2020. We adhered to PRISMA guidelines and used the modified GRADE approach to evaluate the data. We included 34 full-text publicati

BACKGROUND: Polydactyly is one of the most common congenital limb dysplasia in many animal species. Although preaxial polydactyly (PPD) has been comprehensively studied in humans as a common abnormality, the genetic variations in other animal species have not been fully understood. Herein, we focused on the pig, as an even-toed ungulate mammal model with its unique advantages in medical and genetic researches, two PPD families consisting of four affected and 20 normal individuals were sequenced.
RESULTS: Our results showed that the PPD in the sampled pigs were not related to previously report

The mosquito vector Aedes aegypti transmits arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) of medical importance, including Zika, dengue, and yellow fever viruses. Controlling mosquito populations remains the method of choice to prevent disease transmission. Novel mosquito control strategies based on genetically manipulating mosquitoes are being developed as additional tools to combat arbovirus transmission. Genetic control of mosquitoes includes two basic strategies: population suppression and population replacement. The former aims to eliminate mosquito populations while the latter aims to replace wi

Cryptosporidium, a waterborne protozoan parasite, has a substantial veterinary and medical impact worldwide. This parasite is more often recognized during waterborne outbreaks because of its resistance to chlorine disinfection, small size making it difficult to inactivate/eliminate through filtration, and presence in many animal species including humans. Migratory waterfowl, in addition to acting as mechanical carriers of Cryptosporidium oocysts, can also serve as natural reservoirs of infection by host-specific Cryptosporidium species. For better understanding of the extent of genetic diversi

In France, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and the leading cause of cancer deaths. Identifying women with a "high" or "very high" breast cancer risk, according the terminology of the Haute Autorité de Santé 2014 guidelines, is essential to offer them special cares in term of screening and prevention. Women genetically predisposed have a very high risk of breast cancer. During the oncogenetic specialist consultation, familial and personal history of cancer is taken into account to evaluate the risk of hereditary Breast/Ovarian syndrome and thus the need of a genetic screenin

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The application of advanced genetic techniques has recently begun to unravel the genetic basis for familial primary aldosteronism type 2 (FH-II).
RECENT FINDINGS: Whole-exome sequencing in a large family with FH-II revealed a shared rare damaging heterozygous variant in CLCN2 (chr.3: g.184075850C>T, p.Arg172Gln) in three severely affected members. The gene encodes a chloride channel, ClC-2. A cohort of 80 unrelated individuals diagnosed with early-onset primary aldosteronism was also examined for CLCN2 mutations finding three further occurrences of p.Arg172Gln mutations and

Pediatric sudden death is a devastating problem worsened by the fact that the death may have been preventable. Sudden cardiac death (SCD) defined as unexplained death within 1 hour after the onset of witnessed symptoms or within 24 hours from the moment when the decedent was last seen alive in the absence of symptoms or any obvious non-cardiac causes. Pediatric sudden cardiac arrest can result from a variety of cardiac conditions such as genetic/heritable, trauma, or use of medications/drugs. The sentinel event can be fatal. Fortunately, not all cases are fatal and suspicion may be evoked by s

OBJECTIVES: A family with homocarnosinosis was reported in the literature in 1976. Three affected siblings had spastic paraplegia, retinitis pigmentosa, mental retardation, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) homocarnosine concentrations 20 times higher than in controls. Based on the clinical findings and new genetic techniques, we have been able to establish a precise genetic diagnosis.
METHOD: The medical records were re-evaluated, and genetic analyses were performed post-mortem in this original family. SNP array-based whole genome homozygosity mapping and Sanger sequencing of the SPG11 gene were

Puberty is a complex biopsychosocial process that can affect an array of psychiatric and medical disorders emerging in adolescence. Although the pubertal process is driven by neuroendocrine changes, few quantitative genetic studies have directly measured puberty-relevant hormones. Hair samples can now be assayed for accumulation of hormones over several months. In contrast to more conventional salivary measures, hair measures are not confounded by diurnal variation or hormonal reactivity. In an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse sample of 1286 child and adolescent twins and multiples fro
