Meconium Microbiome Maturation Patterns Linked to Postnatal Growth Failure in Neonates.

Background/Objectives: This study investigated whether meconium microbial profiles differed according to postnatal growth failure (PGF) and whether gestational age (GA)-related microbial maturation patterns appeared to vary according to subsequent growth status. Methods: Meconium samples were collected from 310 neonates born at 22-40 weeks of gestation, and 16S rRNA sequencing was conducted. After excluding small-for-gestational-age infants, the analyses included 151 samples from PGF+ infants and 131 samples from PGF- infants. Microbial composition, alpha and beta diversity were compared accor

Limbus-Sparing Congenital Central Corneal Dermoid: A Rare Developmental Anomaly.

The authors report a rare case of a limbus-sparing central corneal dermoid in a 1-year-old boy, contributing to the limited existing literature of only three such documented cases worldwide. This case report describes the clinical presentation, surgical management, and histopathologic characteristics of this unique developmental anomaly. A comprehensive clinical evaluation was conducted, including ophthalmic examination, B-scan ultrasonography, and surgical intervention. The dermoid was excised along with penetrating keratoplasty, with the excised specimen undergoing detailed histopathologic a

Explainable predictive models of short stature and exploration of related environmental growth factors: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Short stature is a prevalent pediatric endocrine disorder for which early detection and prediction are pivotal for improving treatment outcomes. However, existing diagnostic criteria often lack the necessary sensitivity and specificity because of the complex etiology of the disorder. Hence, this study aims to employ machine learning techniques to develop an interpretable predictive model for normal-variant short stature and to explore how growth environments influence its development. METHODS: We conducted a case‒control study including 100 patients with normal-variant short statu

Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BL-11 promotes height growth in 3- to 7-year-Old children with below-average height: A self-controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Short stature of children has captured extensive attention since it reflects the health status of children and affects physical and psychological health throughout children's life. Compelling evidences have revealed that gut microbiota plays a critical role in growth regulation through nutrient metabolism, inflammation modulation, and endocrine signaling. Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BL-11 (BL-11) is a probiotic strain with potential benefits for gut health and metabolic function, but its effect on growth promotion in children with mild growth delay has not been fully exp

A case of SHORT syndrome with a novel genetic mutation diagnosed 19 years after the onset of diabetes.

A 33-year-old man presented with short stature, thin build, hearing impairment, Rieger anomaly, and a history of inguinal hernia. He also exhibited characteristic facies, including a triangular face with a small chin, deeply set eyes, and low-set ears. He was born with intrauterine growth restriction and developed diabetes during adolescence, requiring high-dose insulin therapy. For 19 years, an accurate diagnosis was not made. We performed direct sequencing of the insulin receptor gene and exons 11-16 of the PIK3R1 gene, identifying a c.1957A>T mutation (p.Lys653*) in the PIK3R1 gene, which c

Biomarkers of environmental enteric dysfunction associated with the linear growth of children 0-5 years in low- and middle-income countries: a systematic review.

A major driver of the link between poor water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and child stunting is hypothesised to be a sub-clinical condition of the small intestine termed environmental enteric dysfunction (EED). This systematic review aimed to collate research investigating the association between biomarkers of EED and child linear growth outcomes. A systematic search of literature was conducted to identify articles that contain a measure of a domain of EED and its association with linear growth outcomes published up to 31 December 2024. Data pertaining to the measure of EED and child linear

Anthropometry relationship with duodenal histologic features of children with environmental enteric dysfunction: a multicenter cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Environmental enteric dysfunction (EED) is a precursor of growth faltering in children living in impoverished conditions who are frequently exposed to environmental toxins and enteropathogens, leading to small bowel inflammatory, malabsorptive, and permeability derangements and low-grade chronic systemic inflammation. OBJECTIVES: We explored the association between anthropometrics and duodenal histologic features of EED among children from 3 lower middle-income country centers. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, Pakistani children (n = 63) with wasting, Bangladesh children (

Relationship between growth and ambulation loss in Duchenne muscular dystrophy boys on steroids.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Treatment with glucocorticoids (GCs) is part of the standard of care in Duchenne muscular dystrophy, but excess weight gain and height stunting are common side-effects. It is still unclear how these growth-related side-effects affect motor function. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study utilized 2228 observations from 648 participants in the UK NorthStar database who had growth and ambulation data recorded between 2006 and 2020. Joint modelling was used to analyse the effect of longitudinal growth centiles on loss of ambulation with respect to GC type and regimen.

Telemedicine Integrated Care Versus In-Person Care Mode for Patients With Short Stature: Comprehensive Comparison of a Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Telemedicine has demonstrated efficacy as a supplement to traditional in-person care when treating certain diseases. Nevertheless, more investigation is needed to comprehensively assess its potential as an alternative to in-person care and its influence on access to care. The successful treatment of short stature relies on timely and regular intervention, particularly in rural and economically disadvantaged regions where the disease is more prevalent. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the clinical outcomes, health-seeking behaviors, and cost of telemedicine integrated into care for

Correlates of early child development among children with stunting: A cross-sectional study in Uganda.

Many children in low- and middle-income countries are not attaining their developmental potential. Stunting is associated with poor child development, but it is not known which correlates of stunting are impairing child development. We explored potential socioeconomic, nutritional, clinical, and household correlates of early child development among 12-59-month-old children with stunting in a cross-sectional study in Uganda. Development was assessed using the Malawi Development Assessment Tool (MDAT) across four domains of gross and fine motor, language, and social skills. Linear regression ana

Wasting coexisting with underweight and stunting among children aged 6‒59 months hospitalised in Garissa County Referral Hospital, Kenya.

Management of undernourished children depends only on wasting yet it can coexist with underweight and/or stunting. Among children admitted to hospital with acute illness, we determined the proportion with wasting coexisting with underweight and/or stunting and their risk factors. A retrospective review of hospital records of children 6‒59 months old admitted at Garissa County referral hospital, Kenya, from January 2017 to December 2019 was conducted. Using World Health Organization 2006 growth standards, undernutrition were defined: wasting as Weight-for-height Z-score < -2, stunting Height-fo

[Biomarkers and Bone Turnover Markers in Chronic Kidney Disease - Mineral and Bone Disorders (CKD-MBD): Recent Advances].

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) provokes biochemical and systemic alterations, causing bone fragility with an increase in bone fracture risk, extraskeletal calcifications, increased morbidity, and cardiovascular mortality. The complex pathophysiological mechanism causes a syndrome called CKD-MBD (Chronic Kidney Disease - Mineral and Bone Disorders), which includes mineral and bone alterations leading to renal osteodystrophy (ROD). An early diagnosis is therefore essential to prevent the onset of more severe complications. A precise diagnosis of bone disorders and the subsequent administration of

A second hotspot for pathogenic exon-skipping variants in CDC45.

Biallelic pathogenic variants in CDC45 are associated with Meier-Gorlin syndrome with craniosynostosis (MGORS type 7), which also includes short stature and absent/hypoplastic patellae. Identified variants act through a hypomorphic loss of function mechanism, to reduce CDC45 activity and impact DNA replication initiation. In addition to missense and premature termination variants, several pathogenic synonymous variants have been identified, most of which cause increased exon skipping of exon 4, which encodes an essential part of the RecJ-orthologue's DHH domain. Here we have identified a secon

Developing and Evaluating an Online Post-Traumatic Growth Program for Firefighters.

We evaluated how an online post-traumatic growth program affected rumination, social support, and post-traumatic growth. We recruited 33 firefighters from two Korean provinces and employed a nonequivalent control group pretest-post-test design. We administered the pretest for the intervention group (n = 16), consisting of eight sessions with an online workbook and messenger group counseling. We conducted post-tests immediately after the program and 4 weeks later. Post-traumatic growth and social support increased significantly. There were no statistically significant differences for intrusive
