Understanding Malaria Treatment Adherence in Rwanda: Implications for Artemisinin Resistance.

Prompt diagnosis and effective treatment are key malaria interventions that rely on community knowledge and adherence to treatment. With the emergence of artemisinin resistance in Rwanda, ensuring optimal malaria treatment practices within communities is essential. This study examined malaria knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) among febrile patients at government clinics to identify factors affecting influencing malaria treatment practices. A cross-sectional study was conducted in six health facilities in moderate to high malaria transmission areas of Rwanda. Patients or caregivers of c

Knowledge, Attitudes, Practices (KAP) of Italian Occupational Physicians towards Tick Borne Encephalitis.

Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE) is an occupational health threat with increasing incidence in the geographic area of Italy. Despite this, TBE vaccination rates have ranged from 10% to 40% in Italy, even in at-risk workers. The reasons for this low rate are investigated in this present study of the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of occupational physicians (OP) regarding TBE disease and vaccination in at-risk workers. A total of 229 OP participated in an internet-based survey by completing a structured questionnaire. Adequate general knowledge of TBE disease was found in 58% of OP. Accurate p

Fluid balance monitoring in congestive heart failure patients in hospital: a best practice implementation project.

OBJECTIVES: This aim of this project was to promote best practice in fluid balance monitoring in congestive heart failure patients. INTRODUCTION: Fluid overload or pulmonary/vascular congestion is a common clinical feature in patients with heart failure and is associated with adverse outcomes. Maintaining records of patients' fluid intake and output (I&O) has long been considered an important aspect of nursing care to assess hydration status. In clinical practice, a prevalence of incongruence between I&O results and clinical signs and symptoms has been noted. We postulate that this incongruen

Impact of the colistin ban on antimicrobial use and resistance-related practices among layer farmers in Indonesia: a comparative KAP study.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global public and animal health threat, to which the misuse of antimicrobials in humans and livestock contributes. Here we describe the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of Indonesian layer farmers regarding AMR and antimicrobial use (AMU) before the national ban on colistin use, as well as the awareness of farmers of the ban. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The first phase, conducted in 2014 as part of a study carried out between 2013 and 2016, involved a cross-sectional survey of small-scale layer poultry farmers, assessing their KAP to

Multifactorial beliefs about the role of genetics and behavior in common health conditions: prevalence and associations with participant characteristics and engagement in health behaviors.

PURPOSE: Many common health conditions arise due to a combination of genetic factors and lifestyle-related behaviors. People's understanding of the multifactorial nature of health conditions has implications for their receptivity to health messages regarding genomics and medicine, and may be related to their adoption of protective health behaviors. Although past work has investigated aspects of either genetic or behavioral causal beliefs, multifactorial beliefs have not been evaluated systematically. METHODS: Utilizing nationally representative cross-sectional data from the Health Information

Assessing employee attitudes in a community-based AIDS service organization.

This study surveyed employees of the Comprehensive AIDS Program of Palm Beach County, Florida, a community-based AIDS service organization, to understand employees' motives for working for the organization and their attitudes toward their jobs, the organization, its clients (persons with AIDS), and governments. The study revealed that the primary reasons employees work for the organization are a desire for personal involvement in the AIDS fight and the personal lifestyle and/or feeling of each employee. These employees were highly motivated, showing some very positive attitudes toward their jo

Effects of an educational health promotion intervention to improve human papillomavirus vaccination acceptance and uptake among adolescent girls: a cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually-transmitted infection worldwide and the primary cause of cervical cancer. Although timely vaccination can prevent HPV infection and reduce the risk of cervical cancer, vaccine uptake among target groups such as adolescent girls is suboptimal. This study aimed to investigate the effects of a school-based educational health promotion intervention to improve HPV vaccine acceptance and uptake among young adolescent girls. METHODS: A cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted with 1,340 female adolescents (Mean age: 15.3 yea

Male involvement in reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health: evaluating gaps between policy and practice in Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Male involvement in maternal and child health is a practice wherein fathers and male community members actively participate in caring for women and supporting their family to access better health services. There is positive association between male involvement and better maternal and child health outcomes. However, the practice is not always practiced optimally, especially in low- and middle-income countries, where women may not have access to economic resources and decision-making power. AIM: This study investigates how key stakeholders within the health system in Uganda engage

Childhood Obesity Declines Project: A Different Methodology.

BACKGROUND: The evidence for and our understanding of community-level strategies such as policies, system, and environmental changes that support healthy eating and active living is growing. However, researchers and evaluation scientists alike are still not confident in what to recommend for preventing or sustaining declines in the prevalence of obesity. METHODS: The Systematic Screening and Assessment (SSA) methodology was adapted as a retrospective process to confirm obesity declines and to better understand what and how policies and programs or interventions may contribute as drivers. Australian primary school communities' understandings of SunSmart: a qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: Skin cancer represents a major health issue for Australia. Childhood sun exposure is an important risk factor and evidence suggests the use of sun protection measures by Australian school children could be improved. This study examines how the SunSmart Program, a school-based skin cancer prevention resource, can be supported to further increase sun protection behaviours to assist in lowering skin cancer incidence. METHODS: The Health Promoting Schools (HPS) framework was adopted to select key stakeholders from a convenience sample of five school communities. Students, teaching sta

Osteoporosis-related life habits and knowledge about osteoporosis among women in El Salvador: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disorder, characterized by reduced bone mass, deterioration of bone structure, increased bone fragility, and increased fracture risk. It is more frequent to find among women than men at a 4:1 ratio. Evidence suggests that to adopt changes on some life habits can prevent or delay development of osteoporosis. Several osteoporosis-risk factors have been confirmed in the US and western Europe, but in El Salvador there are neither reliable epidemiological statistics about this skeletal disorder nor studies addressing osteoporosis-risk factors in women

An interim report of an intervention strategy for diabetes care in Jamaica.

The high prevalence (17.9%) of diabetes mellitus and its attendant costs have been recognized for some time. The diabetic public has hitherto been too oriented to seeking health care at the secondary and tertiary health care centres; a much too costly approach. As a part of a wellness promotion thrust as well as an awareness and intervention strategy, a number of health care agencies have collaborated in a training programme of lay diabetes facilitators. This was intended to allow a domino effect of "each one teach one" within the community. This intervention programme was undertaken over an 1
