Chitosan-sunflower meal biochar hydrogel incorporated with green synthesized NiO nanoparticles for enhanced catalytic reduction of anthropogenic water pollutants.

Anthropogenic activities have been one of the crucial driving factors for water pollution globally, thereby warranting a sustainable strategy for its redressal. In this study, we have developed a hydrogel-biochar nanocomposite for catalytic reduction of water pollutants. To begin with, green synthesis of nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiO NPs) was accomplished from waste kinnow peel extract via the environmentally benign microwave method. The formation of NiO NPs was affirmed from different analytical techniques namely ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffrac

Oxidized sodium alginate hydrogel-mouse nerve growth factor sustained release system promotes repair of peripheral nerve injury.

In recent years, mouse nerve growth factor (mNGF) has emerged as an important biological regulator to repair peripheral nerve injury, but its systemic application is restricted by low efficiency and large dosage requirement. These limitations prompted us to search for biomaterials that can be locally loaded. Oxidized sodium alginate hydrogel (OSA) exhibits good biocompatibility and physicochemical properties, and can be loaded with drugs to construct a sustained-release system that can act locally on nerve injury. Here, we constructed a sustained-release system of OSA-mouse nerve growth factor

Self-enhanced PTX@HSA-HA loaded functionalized injectable hydrogel for effective local chemo-photothermal therapy in breast cancer.

Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that poses a significant threat to women's health and single therapy fails to play a good oncological therapeutic effect. Synergistic treatment with multiple strategies may make up for the deficiencies and has gained widespread attention. In this study, sulfhydryl-modified hyaluronic acid (HA-SH) was covalently crosslinked with polydopamine (PDA) via a Michael addition reaction to develop an injectable hydrogel, in which PDA can be used not only as a matrix but also as a photothermal agent. After HSA and paclitaxel were spontaneously organized into nanopartic

Thermosensitive hydrogel with emodin-loaded triple-targeted nanoparticles for a rectal drug delivery system in the treatment of chronic non-bacterial prostatitis.

BACKGROUND: The complex etiology and pathogenesis underlying Chronic Non-Bacterial Prostatitis (CNP), coupled with the existence of a Blood Prostate Barrier (BPB), contribute to a lack of specificity and poor penetration of most drugs. Emodin (EMO), a potential natural compound for CNP treatment, exhibits commendable anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-fibrosis properties but suffers from the same problems as other drugs. METHODS: By exploiting the recognition properties of lactoferrin (LF) receptors that target intestinal epithelial cells (NCM-460) and prostate epithelial cells (RWPE-1

Mitigating Critical Peripheral Nerve Deficit Therapy with Reactive Oxygen Species/Ca2+-Responsive Dynamic Hydrogel-Mediated mRNA Delivery.

Critical peripheral nerve deficiencies present as one of the most formidable conundrums in the realm of clinical medicine, frequently culminating in structural degradation and derangement of the neuromuscular apparatus. Engineered extracellular vesicles (EVs) exhibit the potential to ameliorate nerve impairments. However, the advent of Wallerian degeneration (WD), an inexorable phenomenon that ensues post peripheral nerve injury, serves as an insurmountable impediment to the direct therapeutic efficacy of EVs. In this investigation, we have fashioned a dynamic network for the conveyance of PTE

Development and evaluation of an injectable ChitHCl-MgSO4-DDA hydrogel for bone regeneration: In vitro and in vivo studies on cell migration and osteogenesis enhancement.

Nonunion and delayed union of the bone are situations in orthopedic surgery that can occur even if the bone alignment is correct and there is sufficient mechanical stability. Surgeons usually apply artificial bone grafts in bone fracture gaps or in bone defect sites for osteogenesis to improve bone healing; however, these bone graft materials have no osteoinductive or osteogenic properties, and fit the morphology of the fracture gap with difficulty. In this study, we developed an injectable chitosan-based hydrogel with MgSO4 and dextran oxidative, with the purpose to improve bone healing throu

Topical treatment of tyrosine kinase 2 inhibitor through borneol-embedded hydrogel: Evaluation for preventive, therapeutic, and Recurrent management of psoriasis.

Psoriasis, an immune-mediated inflammatory skin disorder characterized by a chronically relapsing-remitting course, continues to be primarily managed through topical therapy. While oral administration of tyrosine kinase 2 inhibitors (TYK2i) stands as an effective approach for psoriasis treatment, the potential efficacy of topical application of TYK2i remains unexplored. Herein, the carbomer/alginic acid hydrogel is embedded with borneol (BO) as a new topical carrier of TYK2i for achieving enhanced transdermal permeation and anti-psoriasis efficacy. The hydrogel system, i.e., TYK2i-BO-gel, exhi

Tricalcium phosphate-loaded injectable hydrogel as a promising osteogenic and bactericidal teicoplanin-delivery system for osteomyelitis treatment: An in vitro and in vivo investigation.

Osteomyelitis is an inflammation of bone tissue usually caused by pyogenic bacteria. The most recurrent clinical approach consists of bone debridement followed by parenteral administration of antibiotics. However, systemic antibiotic treatment has limitations regarding absorption rate and bioavailability over time. The main challenge of osteomyelitis treatment consists of coupling the persistent infection treatment with the regeneration of the bone debrided. In this work, we developed an injectable drug delivery system based on poloxamer 407 hydrogel containing undoped Mg, Zn-doped tricalcium

Multifunctional Scaffold Comprising Metal-Organic Framework, Hydrogel, and Demineralized Bone Matrix for the Treatment of Steroid-Induced Femoral Head Necrosis.

Overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) results in oxidative stress, a critical factor in the pathogenesis of steroid-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head (SONFH). Excess ROS not only hinders the osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) but also impairs mitochondrial structure and function, resulting in irreversible cellular damage. Herein, a biomimetic multifunctional scaffold comprising Zn-modified metal-organic framework 818 (Zn-MOF-818) loaded with deferoxamine (DFO), gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogel, and demineralized bone matrix (

Effect of Mechanical Stimuli on the Phenotypic Plasticity of Induced Pluripotent Stem-Cell-Derived Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells in a 3D Hydrogel.

Introduction: Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) play a pivotal role in vascular homeostasis, with dysregulation leading to vascular complications. Human-induced pluripotent stem-cell (hiPSC)-derived VSMCs offer prospects for personalized disease modeling and regenerative strategies. Current research lacks comparative studies on the impact of three-dimensional (3D) substrate properties under cyclic strain on phenotypic adaptation in hiPSC-derived VSMCs. Here, we aim to investigate the impact of intrinsic substrate properties, such as the hydrogel's elastic modulus and cross-linking density i

A Physiologically Responsive Nanocomposite Hydrogel for Treatment of Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma via Proteolysis-Targeting Chimeras Enhanced Immunotherapy.

Although immunotherapy has revolutionized oncotherapy, only ≈15% of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients benefit from the current therapies. An immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME) and dysregulation of the polycomb ring finger oncogene BMI1 are potential reasons for the failure. Herein, to promote immunotherapeutic efficacy against HNSCC, an injectable nanocomposite hydrogel is developed with a polymer framework (PLGA-PEG-PLGA) that is loaded with both imiquimod encapsulated CaCO3 nanoparticles (RC) and cancer cell membrane (CCM)-coated mesoporous silica nanoparticl

Endoscopically injectable and self-crosslinkable hydrogel-mediated stem cell transplantation for alleviating esophageal stricture after endoscopic submucosal dissection.

Esophageal stricture after extensive endoscopic submucosal dissection impairs the quality of life of patients with superficial esophageal carcinoma. Beyond the limitations of conventional treatments including endoscopic balloon dilatation and the application of oral/topical corticosteroids, several cell therapies have been recently attempted. However, such methods are still limited in clinical situations and existing setups, and the efficacies are less in some cases since the transplanted cells hardly remain at the resection site for a long time due to swallowing and peristalsis of the esophag

Injectable collagen hydrogel combines human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells to promote endometrial regeneration in rats with thin endometrium.

The regeneration of thin endometrium still remains as a great challenge in the field of reproductive medicine. Stem cells-based therapy has been considered as a promising strategy for the restoration of thin endometrium. However, the low transplantation and retention rate of stem cells and loss of stemness due to in vitro expansion limits the therapeutic efficacy. In our study, we combined collagen hydrogel and human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (uMSCs) for improving the regeneration of thin endometrium, by using the potent pluripotency and low immunogenicity of uMSCs and collagen hyd

Increasing rectum-prostate distance using a hydrogel spacer to reduce radiation exposure during proton beam therapy for prostate cancer.

SpaceOAR, a polyethylene-glycol hydrogel, reduces rectal radiation exposure during radiation therapy for prostate cancer. Previously, our group reported the modified technique of hydrogel insertion, which achieves greater separated distance at prostate-apex. This study aimed to investigate the impact of separated distance at prostate-apex and our modifier technique, on radiation exposure reduction during proton beam therapy (PBT). We included 330 patients undergoing PBT with the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of 63 Gray (Gy) for localized prostate cancer, and categorized them into gro

Alginate/gum arabic-based biomimetic hydrogel enriched with immobilized nerve growth factor and carnosine improves diabetic wound regeneration.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) often remain untreated because they are difficult to heal, caused by reduced skin sensitivity and impaired blood vessel formation. In this study, we propose a novel approach to manage DFUs using a multifunctional hydrogel made from a combination of alginate and gum arabic. To enhance the healing properties of the hydrogel, we immobilized nerve growth factor (NGF), within specially designed mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN). The MSNs were then incorporated into the hydrogel along with carnosine (Car), which further improves the hydrogel's therapeutic properties.

Liquid-like Oral Sustained-Release System Based on Acid-Sensitive in situ Hydrogel for Alleviate Gastrointestinal Side Effects of Indobufen.

Commonly, most oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have known gastric adverse reactions due to their long-term and high dose administration. In this study, a novel liquid sustained-release system based on multiple-unit in situ hydrogel beads was designed to address this issue. The system is composed of sodium alginate (SA), gellan gum (GG), zinc oxide (ZnO), and magnesium oxide (MgO). Furthermore, indobufen was loaded into the system to evaluate its gastric mucosal protection effect. This effect can be attributed to the topical antacid, pepsin inhibition, and sustained drug rel
