AIMS: The aim of the study was to explore whether exposure to microbial agents determines the prevalence of acute coronary events.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Patients with unstable angina pectoris and myocardial infarction (N=335) and their paired controls were investigated. The subjects answered a questionnaire about their childhood contagious diseases: varicella, scarlet fever, measles, rubella, mononucleosis and mumps. Blood samples were taken for bacterial and viral serology. The odds ratio for CHD was highest in the upper quartile of the enterovirus (EV), herpes simplex virus (HSV) and Chlamyd

Occasional EBV infection of human NK cells may lead to malignant diseases such as naso-pharyngeal NK lymphoma although NK cells do not express CD21, the primary receptor for EBV. Here we show that during early EBV infection in patients, NK cells attacked EBV-infected autologous B cells. In vitro, NK cells activated by conjugation to CD21(+) B-EBV cell targets transiently acquired a weak CD21(+) phenotype by synaptic transfer of few receptor molecules onto their own membrane. In the presence of viral particles, these ectopic receptors allowed EBV binding to the novel NK cell host. Hence, trans-

The group of the human-pathogenic herpesviruses comprises five subgroups: Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), varicella zoster virus (VZV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Primary infection with these ubiquitous herpesviruses usually occurs in childhood or during adolescence and frequently remains inapparent. However, it can also give rise to a variety of clinical pictures. Important clinical manifestations of herpesvirus infections are mucocutaneous lesions (HSV-1, HSV-2, VZV) self-limited, lymphoproliferative diseases (CMV, EBV) and

The properties and structure of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) DNA are described. The restriction endonuclease maps of the viral genome are presented. Differences in the structure of DNAs from various subtypes of EBV and their influence on the phenotype status are discussed.

Monocytoid B cells (MBCs) are a subset of B cells that may be recognized in several reactive and tumoral lymph node conditions, including toxoplasmic lymphadenitis, infectious mononucleosis, and Hodgkin's lymphoma. Although this is a commonly observed cell population, which has even given its name to a type of lymphoma, MBC lymphoma, scarcely any information is available about the function and characteristics of this cell type. A relationship with marginal zone (MZ) B lymphocytes has been claimed for MBCs, but this has not yet been fully proven. Indeed, specific markers for MBCs are still lack…

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a herpesvirus leading to latent infections, is principally responsible for infectious mononucleosis, and also plays role in the etiology of various lymphomas and post-transplantation lymphoproliferative disease (PTLD). Laboratory diagnosis of EBV infections depends on the detection of atypical lymphocytes, heterophile antibodies, specific antibodies against viral capsid (VCA), nuclear (EBNA) and early (EA) antigens, and of the viral DNA. Since the seropositivity rate in adult population is very high (80-95%) in our country, routine serologic tests may be insufficient …

OBJECTIVE: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection was greatly common in the world. CMV infection produces usually mild or asymptomatic infections in individuals with normal immune responses, whereas it may cause serious disease in immunosuppressive patients. Clinical manifestations include suppression of myelopoiesis, a mononucleosis like syndrome, hepatosplenomegaly, lymphadenopathy, thrombocytopenia, and hemolytic anemia. In patients undergoing bone marrow transplantation CMV remains the most common infectious causes of morbidity and mortality. But the treatment drugs with specific effect for CMV w

The presence of VCA IgG in the absence of VCA IgM and EBNA-1 IgG antibodies makes classifying EBV infection more difficult as this serological picture can be seen in the case of past infection with EBNA-1 IgG loss or non-appearance, or acute infections with the early disappearance or delayed onset of VCA IgM. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of this pattern in 2,422 outpatients with suspected EBV infection examined in 2005-2006, and to interpret its significance by means of immunoblotting. One hundred and seventy-seven (7.3%) of the patients were VCA IgG-positive, VCA IgM-neg

Human thioredoxin (hTRX)/adult T-cell leukemia (ATL)-derived factor (ADF) was originally reported as an interleukin-2 (IL-2) receptor-alpha-inducing factor produced by human T-cell lymphotropic virus-1-positive (HTLV-1+) cell lines. Growing evidence indicates that hTRX/ADF plays important roles in cellular responses against oxidative stress and is involved in a variety of cellular functions. A high level of hTRX/ADF expression is also observed in other human virus-infected cell lines including those of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and human papillomavirus. In this report, we analyzed the effect of

Four patients with lymphoproliferative disease of granular lymphocytes (LDGL) coexpressing CD3 and the natural killer (NK)-related "p58" receptor for HLA-C alleles were studied. These CD3+p58+ LDGLs have been detected among a series of 44 CD3+ LDGLs analyzed. Two patients with LDGL (GI and BA) expressed only the p58 molecule defined by the GL-183 and CH-L monoclonal antibodies (MoAbs), while the cases of patients PU and MA also coexpressed the molecular form identified by EB6 anti-p58 MoAb. Three LDGL cases (GI, MA, and PU) displayed the CD8+4-CD16+ T-cell receptor (TCR)alpha/beta+ phenotype,

Chronic active Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection occurs sporadically in a small fraction of individuals infected with EBV. A clear definition of the disease and an unambiguous diagnostic test are still lacking. In an attempt to identify a serologic marker to facilitate the diagnosis, immunoblot and radioimmunoprecipitation assay (RIPA) were compared with standard immunofluorescence on 39 available sera. Results by RIPA revealed that antibodies to a 120 kDa viral protein correlated with the presence of chronic active EBV infection; these antibodies were not detected in sera from other EBV-sero
