In recent years, deep learning models have been applied to neuroimaging data for early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) images provide structural and functional information about the brain, respectively. Combining these features leads to improved performance than using a single modality alone in building predictive models for AD diagnosis. However, current multi-modal approaches in deep learning, based on sMRI and PET, are mostly limited to convolutional neural networks, which do not facilitate integratio

It is widely known that personality traits collectively discussed as the Dark Triad are antagonistic and associated with poor interpersonal relationships, but few studies have examined how specific facets of antagonism are associated with psychosocial adjustment or how antagonism relates to psychosocial adjustment other than interpersonal functioning. The purpose of this study was to examine how 6 antagonism facets-manipulativeness, grandiosity, attention-seeking, hostility, callousness, and deceitfulness-relate to comprehensive psychosocial functional domains (i.e., well-being, interpersonal

BACKGROUND: While cancer screening is proven to be effective in the early detection of the disease and early detection enables better treatment options, screening uptake has been declining. Research shows that online health information helps people to make health-related decisions. However, not all online health information is credible, and misinformation might play a role in people's choice to take part in screening.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze online discussions about cancer screening programs using corpus analysis. Specifically, we aimed to investigate the full dataset through c

BACKGROUND: The recent emphasis on shared decision-making has increased the role of the Internet as a readily accessible medical reference source for patients and families. However, the lack of professional review creates concern over the quality, accuracy, and readability of medical information available to patients on the Internet.
METHODS: Three Internet search engines (Google, Yahoo, and Bing) were evaluated prospectively using 3 difference search terms of varying sophistication ("congenital hip dislocation," "developmental dysplasia of the hip," and "hip dysplasia in children"). Sixty-th

BACKGROUND: Secure text messages (TMs) exchanged among interdisciplinary care teams in nursing homes (NHs) contain clinical information that aligns with the Age-Friendly Health Systems 4Ms: What Matters, Medication, Mentation, and Mobility, yet, this information is not captured in any structured form, making it unavailable for systematic monitoring or quality reporting. Automatically extracting 4M information accurately and efficiently from these messages could enable several downstream applications within long term care settings. This task, however, is challenging because of the fragmented sy

BACKGROUND: Estimating the size of key populations, including female sex workers (FSW) and men who have sex with men (MSM), can inform planning and resource allocation for HIV programs at local and national levels. In geographic areas where direct population size estimates (PSEs) for key populations have not been collected, small area estimation (SAE) can help fill in gaps using supplemental data sources known as auxiliary data. However, routinely collected program data have not historically been used as auxiliary data to generate subnational estimates for key populations, including in Namibia

Gastrointestinal (GI) organoids are now widely used for disease modeling, drug discovery, regenerative-, and precision medicine. As publications using GI organoids have increased exponentially, methodological reporting across GI organoid studies remains inconsistent, making results difficult to interpret, compare, and reproduce. To address this, we present community-informed guidance for reporting key experimental details in GI organoid research. Our recommendations were developed by integrating established biomedical reporting frameworks, organoid-focused resources from international organiza

Electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and wavelength dispersive spectroscopy (WDS) are ubiquitous tools for chemical analysis of geological samples. Analysis type is often confined to quantitative but spatially-limited (∼0.5-2+ µm diameter) spot analysis, or qualitative but spatially-resolved mapping. This contribution outlines a method that combines the quantitative aspect of spot analyses with the spatial resolution of EPMA mapping and associated data processing and visualization workflows. The acquisition and processing of spatially-resolved, quantitative chemical maps of geological samples a

The source of the human voice lies in the rapid oscillations of the vocal folds (VF) inside the larynx. Currently, VF diseases are diagnosed with an endoscope providing a superficial view of the VFs but no further 3D information of the underlying VF structures. With magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) the full 3D spatial information could be acquired, but MRI so far lacks the necessary temporal resolution. We propose a new MRI method based on zero echo time (ZTE)-MRI to encode the rapid periodic VF oscillation. Combined with projection navigators to compensate for laryngeal motion and simultaneou

For infectious diseases where people can experience multiple infections during their lifetime, the time between observed infections in individuals (or "time to recurrence") can provide valuable information on infection and transmission dynamics. Routinely collected data, such as electronic health records, are a potential source of time to recurrence data. However, they are challenging to analyse because patients can drop out of the data set in a way that is not visible to the data collection process. Standard epidemiological approaches, such as parametric survival analysis with imputation, can

BACKGROUND: Visual perception of face images or face pareidolia can be evaluated with event-related potentials (ERP) for healthy subjects and patients with neurological conditions. In this study, we aimed to analyse event-related potential components such as P100, N100, N170, and vertex-positive potential (VPP) in response to face pareidolia perception in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients.
METHODS: ERPs were recorded during the pareidolia test. Waveforms were analzyed and current source density (CSD) maps were generated.
RESULTS: CSD profiles were shown to be interpretable when face and

Diagnostic network optimization (DNO) is an analytical approach that enables use of available country data to inform evidence-based decision-making to optimize access to diagnostic services. A DNO methodology was developed using available data sources and a commercial supply chain optimization software. In collaboration with Ministries of Health and partners, the approach was applied in Kenya, India and the Philippines to map TB diagnostic networks, identify misalignments, and determine optimal network design to increase patient access to TB diagnostic services and improve device utilization.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the analysis of severe maternal morbidity/maternal near miss cases as complementary to the analysis of maternal deaths since the incidence is higher and the predictive factors of the two outcomes are similar. Considering that the reasons for maternal mortality in Brazil have remained constant despite the commitment made during the General Assembly of the United Nations in 2015, this article aims to propose a nationwide maternal near miss surveillance system. We propose the inclusion of maternal near miss events in the National List of Compulsory N
