Essential oils (EOs) are known to have varying degrees of antimicrobial properties that are mainly due to the presence of bioactive compounds. These include antiviral, nematicidal, antifungal, insecticidal and antioxidant properties. This review highlights the potential of EOs and their compounds for application as antifungal agents for the treatment of skin diseases via conventional and nonconventional approaches. A search was conducted using three databases (Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar), and all relevant articles from the period of 2010-2020 that are freely available in English we

The Tibellus oblongus spider is an active predator that does not spin webs and remains poorly investigated in terms of venom composition. Here, we present a new toxin, named Tbo-IT2, predicted by cDNA analysis of venom glands transcriptome. The presence of Tbo-IT2 in the venom was confirmed by proteomic analyses using the LC-MS and MS/MS techniques. The distinctive features of Tbo-IT2 are the low similarity of primary structure with known animal toxins and the unusual motif of 10 cysteine residues distribution. Recombinant Tbo-IT2 (rTbo-IT2), produced in E. coli using the thioredoxin fusion pr

Schistosomiasis is a severe neglected tropical disease caused by trematodes and transmitted by freshwater snails. Snails are known to be highly tolerant to agricultural pesticides. However, little attention has been paid to the ecological consequences of pesticide pollution in areas endemic for schistosomiasis, where people live in close contact with non-sanitized freshwaters. In complementary laboratory and field studies on Kenyan inland areas along Lake Victoria, we show that pesticide pollution is a major driver in increasing the occurrence of host snails and thus the risk of schistosomiasi

Diazinon is a synthetic molecule known as an organophosphorus insecticide. It is used for gardens and for agriculture. This molecule represents a toxicological concern for humans. For this reason, the detection and the quantification of the diazinon in human samples are important in order to monitor an exposure and to diagnose intoxications. The aim of this work is to develop a selective method for the quantification of diazinon in human plasma by means of a gas chromatography (GC) with a mass spectroscopy (MS) detector. The method presented in this article includes a liquid-liquid extraction

Spider venoms contain many functional proteins/peptides such as proteinases, serine/cysteine proteinase inhibitors, insecticidal toxins, and ion channel toxins. However, to date, no peptide toxin with procoagulant activities has been identified from spider venom. In this study, a novel toxin LCTX-F2 with coagulation-promoting activity was identified and characterized in the venom of the spider Lycosa singoriensis (L. singoriensis). LCTX-F2 significantly shortened activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), clotting time, and plasma recalcification time. This toxin directly interacted with se

Cassia leiandra is an Amazonian plant species that is used popularly for the treatment of mycoses. Recently, a protease inhibitor, named ClTI, with insecticidal activity against Aedes aegypti, was purified from the mature seeds of C. leiandra. In this work, we show that ClTI has antifungal activity against Candida species and describe its mode of action towards Candida albicans. This study is relevant because the nosocomial infections caused by Candida species are a global public health problem that, together with the growing resistance to current drugs, has increased the urgency of the search

Comparatively little attention has been paid to the bryophytes for use in the human diet or medicine in spite of the presence of 23 000 species globally. Several hundred new compounds have been isolated from the liverworts (Marchantiophyta), and more than 40 new carbon skeletons of terpenoids and aromatic compounds were found. Most of the liverworts studied elaborate characteristic odiferous, pungent, and bitter-tasting compounds, of which many show antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral, allergic contact dermatitis, cytotoxic, insecticidal, anti-HIV, plant growth regulatory, neurotrophic, NO pr

The malaria situation in India is complex as a result of diverse socio-environmental conditions. India contributes a substantial burden of malaria outside sub-Saharan Africa, with the third highest Plasmodium vivax prevalence in the world. Successful malaria control in India is likely to enhance malaria elimination efforts in the region. Despite modest gains, there are many challenges for malaria elimination in India, including: varied patterns of malaria transmission in different parts of the country demanding area-specific control measures; intense malaria transmission fuelled by favourable

Insecticide-treated mosquito nets were first put to practical use in the Western Pacific Region. Less than a decade after conducting workshops and other promotional activities, millions of people were protected by 1989. This occurred before the availability of commercially produced pretreated nets and before global funding for mass net distribution. This paper describes the sequence of steps leading to regional control success. The beginning stages in 1979 recognized that treating torn mosquito nets was a viable control option. Basic net treatment procedures were established by 1983 and worksh

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a public health problem that threats the entire world today. Japanese Encephalitis virus (JEV) mostly became a threat due to the significant number of increase of susceptible mosquito vectors and vertebrate hosts in Asia by which around 70,000 cases and 10,000 deaths per year took place in children below 15 years of age. In this paper, a mathematical model of JE due to JEV from the vector source (infected mosquito) and two vertebrate hosts (infected human and infected pig) is formulated. The disease can be controlled by applying several control measures such as va

Trachoma is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. Infection with C. trachomatis produces characteristic changes to the inner surface of the eyelids, resulting in sequela that when left untreated, leads to vision impairment and blindness. Repeated trachoma infections can cause severe scarring of the inside of the eyelid and can cause the eyelashes to scratch the cornea (trichiasis). The objective of this overview was to synthesize the evidence from Cochrane systematic reviews regarding the treatment of trachoma, and to provide a brief and user-friendly front end f

The biosynthesis of secondary metabolites provides higher plants with mechanisms of defense against microbes, insects, and herbivores. One common cellular target of these molecules is the highly conserved microtubule cytoskeleton, and microtubule-targeting compounds with insecticidal, antifungal, nematicidal, and anticancer activities have been identified from plants. A new retro-dihydrochalcone, taccabulin A, with microtubule-destabilizing activity has been identified from the roots and rhizomes of Tacca species. This finding is notable because the microtubule-stabilizing taccalonolides are a

Pellitorine (PLT), an active amide compound, is well known to possess insecticidal, antibacterial and anticancer properties. However, the anti-coagulant functions of PLT are not studied yet. Here, the anticoagulant activities of PLT were examined by monitoring activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), prothrombin time (PT), and the activities of cell-based thrombin and activated factor X (FXa). Furthermore, the effects of PLT on the expressions of plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 (PAI-1) and tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA) were tested in tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α activat

The paper considers horizontal transmission routes of baculovirus infection in the gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar L.). The original method for modeling natural processes in controllable conditions allowed one to estimate the influence of factors on the occurrence of epizooties. The authors investigated 3 possible models of virus transmission from infected to uninfected gypsy moths: 1) infected and test caterpillars were kept and fed together (a complex route); 2) those which were in the immediate vicinity, but deprived of eating together (an aerial route); 3) test caterpillars were fed on the le
