There is a little information on vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) in the neonatal period. We have measured plasma concentrations of this biologically important peptide in 159 preterm infants and 98 term neonates. Preterm neonates during the first four days of life had plasma VIP concentrations which were five times greater than the levels in 12 healthy adult controls (9.6+/-0.7 pmol/l, mean +/-S.E.M., compared with 1.9+/-0.5 pmol/l, p less than 0.001), and these elevated concentrations persisted throughout the neonatal period. A new approach for measurement of ribonucleic acid is based on extraction of ribonucleic acid by combined action of a detergent and high speed homogenization followed by precipitation of ribonucleic acid with cadmium +2 ions and its subsequent measure with orcinol. Disappearance of digesta ribonucleic acid flowing along the small intestine was measured in six rams, each equipped with three T-shaped cannulas that were placed in six sites of the small intestine. The pattern of the metastases in intestinal and diffuse types of gastric carcinoma were compared in 77 autopsy cases. Differences in the extent of the dissemination, in the distribution of metastases, and in the type of secondary involvement were found. The diffuse type of carcinoma showed a wider dissemination than the intestinal type. The intestinal type of carcinoma involved the liver more frequently and more extensively. Peritoneal metastases, lymphatic permeation of the lungs, and Krukenberg tumors were more commonly found in cases of the diffuse type.

The Authors describe two patients observed because of an acute obstructive episode and presenting at laparotomy a stenosing carcinoma of the ileum. Experimental studies were done on rats on compensatory absorptive capacity following Martin's operation for extensive aganglionosis. Experimental aganglionosis was produced in the descending colon of rats by serosal application of 0.1% benzalkonium chloride solution. Because of inadequate ureteral length or disease preventing direct ureterovesical anastomoses, antirefluxing intestinal segments were used in eight children during reconstruction of their urinary tracts. The case of a 42-year-old-man with dissociated deficiency of immunoglobulins and intestinal malabsorption is presented. The gastrointestinal symptoms included post-prandial pains and steatorrhea. Histologic and immunohistochemistry studies of small intestinal biopsies revealed subtotal villous atrophy and absence of IgA producing plasma cells. The deficiency of immunoglobulins was total for IgA and moderate for IgM. IgG was increased. HLA B8 haplotype was present Gluten-free diet gave dramatic improvement in few days on clinic symptoms. Bipolar electrodes for recording electrical discharges of colon smooth muscle and strain gages for recording associated contractions of circular muscle were implanted in six rhesus monkeys.
