Young chicks were fed diets deficient in proteins, iron, niacin or thiamin to study the effects on various parameters of mineral metabolism in the duodenal mucosa. None of the treatments affected mucosal alkaline phosphatase activity; however, a five-day deprivation of protein reduced the inorganic phosphate content of mucosal cell nuclei. Iron deficiency reduced mucosal Ca, Zn, Fe and phosphate content, while niacin deficiency decreased mucosal Ca and phosphate. Ferrritin can be measured in blood serum radioimmunometrically. Serum ferritin is directly correlated to body iron stores. Serum ferritins from a patient with haemochromatosis and from a patient with transfusional siderosis were compared with tissue isoferritins on the basis of their iron content, isoferritin spectrum and immunological properties. Both serum ferritins had a low iron content and corresponded to only the most basic isoferritins in liver. The serum ferritins were very similar to the natural apoferritin from liver in all respects.

Comparative studies were carried out on the effect of the application of a ferrodextran preparation (A-100), muscularly, and the oral administration of urzoferruvit and taferon-tablets to pigs. The result was read by the changes in the body weight, the hemoglobin, erythrocytes, leukocytes, and reticulocytes. It was established that the muscular application of A-100 at the rate of 0.1 Fe3+/kg prevents ferrodeficiency anaemia and affects favourably the growth of pigs.
