Oral diseases as emerging risk factors for Alzheimer's disease: A scoping review.

This scoping review examined current evidence on the relationship between oral diseases and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Systematic searches were conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and KMbase for studies published from 1990 to December 2024, using terms of Alzheimer's disease, dementia, oral health, periodontal disease, dental caries, and tooth loss. Human and validated animal studies investigating microbiological, immunological, inflammatory, genetic, or functional links between oral health and AD were included. Of 1328 records, 841 remained after duplicates were remove

Practical Identifiability in a Viscoelastic Respiratory Model for Mechanical Ventilation.

Mechanical ventilation is a life support system for patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). As part of strategies to protect the lung during ventilation, plateau pressure can be determined via an end-inspiratory pause; however, there is no agreed-upon pause duration in medical protocols. Mechanical ventilation can be modelled using the Viscoelastic model (VEM) for respiration. The identification of static compliance is of clinical interest, as it can be used to estimate plateau pressure. Practical identifiability analysis quantifies the confidence with which model parameters

Management of sexual dysfunction in menopause: an update on evidence-based strategies.

INTRODUCTION: Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) at menopause is a group of prevalent and multifactorial conditions that significantly impair quality of life and well-being. Hormonal decline, particularly estrogen and androgen deprivation, along with aging-related changes, contribute to genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) and hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD), the two most relevant clinical entities. AREAS COVERED: This narrative review provides an updated revision of the literature regarding evidence-based strategies for FSD in menopausal women. Emphasis is placed on pharmacologic

Optimisation of Levofloxacin-loaded electrospun fibres for diabetic wound treatment.

Foot ulcers are a common and serious diabetes complication, significantly affecting patients' quality of life. Chronic diabetic wounds are difficult to treat and often resist conventional therapies. Recently, materials developed through emerging techniques have gained attention for use in wound care and tissue regeneration. This study explores the development of nanofibres through electrospinning to create therapeutic patches for diabetic foot ulcers. Electrospinning allows control over fibres composition, orientation, and diameter, offering advantages such as simplicity and adaptability. Key

Suicide by Firearm and Hormonal Imbalances: A Forensic Case Report With Literature Review.

Hormonal imbalances play a crucial role in the development of various diseases, with a significant impact on the gynecological system, especially in the onset of uterine fibroids (UFs). UFs, also known as myomas or leiomyomas, are noncancerous uterine growths commonly observed in women, particularly during their reproductive years. By age 50, many women experience fibroids, though the condition's prevalence varies significantly across different ethnic groups. While most fibroids remain asymptomatic, those that are symptomatic can lead to several issues, such as irregular bleeding, pelvic disco

Ciliary Motility and Ultrastructure in Bronchial Epithelium of Lung Transplant Recipients with Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia.

Background and Objective: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare genetic disorder that affects the mucociliary system, leading to progressive lung damage. This deterioration can result in bronchiectasis, atelectasis, and respiratory failure, necessitating lung transplantation in severe cases. This study aims to assess ciliary motility and ultrastructure in the bronchial epithelium of transplanted lungs in patients with PCD to determine whether mucociliary function is preserved post-transplantation. The findings seek to enhance scientific understanding and provide prognostic insights for th

Effects of Inadvertent Left Atrial Return During Venovenous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation: The Veno-Left Atrial Case Series.

Venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-V ECMO) is a life-saving organ support for patients with severe respiratory failure. One of the possible complications involves cannula positioning, but the literature has largely focused on recirculation. We report five cases, from a cohort of 320 patients treated at a high-volume ECMO center, in which the tip of the long, non-multiperforated return cannula in a femoro-femoral V-V ECMO configuration inadvertently crossed the interatrial septum. This resulted in a veno-left atrial (V-LA) configuration with a massive right-to-left shunt of hyper

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis is characterized by tissue factor-driven coagulopathy, endothelial injury, and immunothrombosis.

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a life-threatening hyperinflammatory syndrome marked by defective cytotoxic lymphocyte function. While its immunologic features are recognized, the contribution of immunothrombosis is less defined. We analyzed plasma from 12 HLH patients with viral, lymphomatous, and autoimmune etiologies. Hallmark features included hyperferritinemia, cytopenias, hypertriglyceridemia, elevated sIL-2Rα, and acute-phase reactants. Cytokine profiling showed high IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, TNF-α, CRP, and IL-18, with variable IFN-γ. Coagulation studies revealed compensated DIC,

Updated definition and scoring of disseminated intravascular coagulation in 2025: communication from the ISTH SSC Subcommittee on Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation.

Compelling evidence supports the need to update the 2001 definition and diagnosis of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) to reflect our current understanding of disease pathophysiology. DIC has been long considered a critical and untreatable sequela of various underlying causes, with resolution only after treatment of the eliciting etiology. Recent views have evolved to appreciate that DIC-associated mortality may be reduced by detection and treatment at an early stage. The International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis Scientific and Standardization Committee on DIC proposes an

Methionine cycle in C. elegans serotonergic neurons regulates diet-dependent behaviour and longevity through neuron-gut signaling.

The folate and methionine cycles (Met-C) are regulated by vitamin B12 (B12), obtained exclusively from diet and microbiota. Met-C supports amino acid, nucleotide, and lipid biosynthesis and provides one-carbon moieties for methylation reactions. While B12 deficiency and polymorphisms in Met-C genes are clinically attributed to neurological and metabolic disorders, less is known about their cell-non-autonomous regulation of systemic physiological processes. Using a B12-sensitive Caenorhabditis elegans mutant, we show that the neuronal Met-C responds to differential B12 content in diet to regula

Cell-free therapy using exosomes: Advancements in the field of dermatology and cosmetology.

Exosomes are a category of extracellular vesicles with a 30-150 nm diameter that serve as carriers of distinct and functional biomolecules, such as lipids, nucleic acids, and proteins. They are released by almost all types of cells and mirror the characteristics of their originating cells, making them appealing for use in cell-free therapeutic applications. The skin is the largest organ of the body. It protects the entire body from the harsh environment, helps to maintain body temperature, supports life for all other body parts, plays a significant role in regulating the immune system, etc. In

Pension reforms, economic security, and mental health: The need for a human rights-based approach.

Pension systems play a crucial role in providing economic security and supporting well-being in later life. However, as governments implement reforms to ensure financial sustainability-such as raising the retirement age, reducing benefits, and shifting to defined-contribution schemes-these measures often overlook their psychological and social consequences. Pension insecurity has been linked to heightened stress, anxiety, and depression, as well as increased social isolation, particularly among vulnerable populations, including those in physically demanding jobs, low-income workers, and indivi

Access to radical and palliative radiotherapy in low- and middle-income countries: challenges, progress, and future directions.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) bear over half of the global cancer mortality but have access to only 5% of global radiotherapy resources. As the cancer burden rises and equity in palliative care gains global attention, a focused review on palliative radiotherapy access in LMICs is both timely and necessary. RECENT FINDINGS: Barriers to radiotherapy access in LMICs are multifaceted, including infrastructure gaps, workforce shortages, geographic centralization, high out-of-pocket costs, and systemic underinvestment. Palliative radiotherapy, despite its proven cost-e

Mitochondria at the Heart of Sepsis: Mechanisms, Metabolism, and Sex Differences.

Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that occurs when the body is unable to effectively combat infection, leading to systemic inflammation and multi-organ failure. Interestingly, females exhibit lower sepsis incidence and improved clinical outcomes compared to males. However, the mechanisms underlying these sex-specific differences remain poorly understood. While sex hormones have been a primary focus, emerging evidence suggests that non-hormonal factors also play contributory roles. Despite sex differences in sepsis, clinical management is the same for both males and females, with treatment

Case Series of Anesthetic Management of Gene Therapy in Children With Aromatic L-Amino Acid Decarboxylase Deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase (AADC) deficiency is a rare life-threatening inborn error of neurotransmitter biosynthesis. It is characterized by deficient biosynthesis of neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin, leading to catecholamines deficiency and sympathetic deprivation, while the parasympathetic system remains functional. Since 2012, gene therapy has led to clinical improvements in symptoms and motor function with a severe phenotype. General anesthesia of children with AADC deficiency is challenging. AIM: Describe prolonged anesthesia management of children with arom
