Preclinical EEG abnormalities in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis.

Persistent electroencephalographic (EEG) abnormalities were observed for 4 years before the clinical onset of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) in a girl initially chosen as a "normal" control subject. Neurologic or mental changes were not observed during this period. Initially, there were focal paroxysmal discharges with shifting characteristics. Nonrepetitive generalized slow-wave complexes during wakefulness appeared later and persisted 3 weeks after onset of clinical manifestations. SSPE repetitive complexes were observed 1 month later. Multifocal paroxysmal EEG discharges during

A Snapshot of Poverty, Diseases and war - the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

DRC's fight with the EVD (Ebola Virus Disease) was just settling when WHO declared COVID-19 to be a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on March 12, 2020. DRC's economic growth decelerated from its pre-COVID level of 4.4% in 2019 to an estimated 0.8% in 2020. This has caused concomitant setbacks in the treatment and control of major health issues like HIV, tuberculosis, measles, rift valley fever and malaria in the country. This, coupled with civil unrest, other infectious diseases and risk to the safety of the health workers is a recipe for a 'perfect storm' waiting to un…

Characterizing spreading dynamics of subsampled systems with nonstationary external input.

Many systems with propagation dynamics, such as spike propagation in neural networks and spreading of infectious diseases, can be approximat … ns as demonstrated on spike recordings from monkey prefrontal cortex and spreading of norovirus and measles.

Vaccine-preventable diseases and vaccination among Italian healthcare workers: a review of current literature.

Protection of healthcare workers (HCWs) from biological hazards in the workplace has the added benefit of contributing to the quality of patient care and patient safety. Vaccinated HCWs act as a barrier against the spread of infections and maintain essential healthcare delivery during outbreaks. In Italy, specific recommendations for vaccination of HCWs are issued by the Ministry of Health within the framework of the National Immunization Prevention Plan. These recommendations provide advice regarding HCW vaccination for hepatitis B, influenza, pertussis, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella and…

Elevated quinolinic acid levels in cerebrospinal fluid in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis.

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a rare neurodegenerative disorder caused by a persistent infection with aberrant measles virus. Indoleamine-2, 3-dioxygenase (IDO) initiates the increased production of kynurenine pathway (KP) metabolites quinolinic acid (QUIN), which has an excitotoxic effect for neurons. We measured serum IDO activity and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of QUIN. The CSF QUIN levels were significantly higher in SSPE patients than in controls, and increased according as neurological disability in a patient studied. Elevation of CSF QUIN and progression of SSPE ind…

Rubella mass campaigns.

The availability of vaccines that contain both measles and rubella components allows for the elimination of both diseases. Although routine infant vaccination with rubella vaccine has had profound effects on the incidence of both acquired and congenital rubella, mass vaccination rapidly stops circulation of the virus and prevents paradoxical increases in susceptibility of women that might result from decreased exposure in childhood. Whereas routine rubella vaccination has eliminated the infection from many developed countries, mass vaccination has rapidly accomplished the same goal in Latin Am…

Factors underlying suboptimal childhood immunisation.

This review considers possible reasons behind parents' missed vaccination opportunities in the context of the latest immunisation coverage rates for England. Suboptimal uptake is not exclusive to measles, mumps and rubella (MMR). A substantial proportion of children also miss diphtheria, tetanus and polio vaccination. For MMR and diphtheria, tetanus and polio, uptake of primary plus booster immunisation is lower than for the primary course alone. Several reasons for suboptimal uptake are identified from the international literature. These provide insights into parental decision-making and pote…

Control of transmission with two types of infection.

The effectiveness of a vaccination strategy to control transmission of an infectious disease depends on the way vaccine doses are distributed to individuals in a community of households. Here we show that this dependence is more complicated when acquisition and severity of illness are determined by the size of the infecting dose, as is thought to be the case for measles and varicella. Two alternative formulations for the way vaccination changes an individual's susceptibility and infectivity show that vaccination coverage, the nature of the vaccine response and the distribution of household siz…

[Chickenpox: sufficient reasons for the introduction of vaccination].

The incidence of chickenpox and its complications is high enough to favour introducing varicella vaccination into the Dutch immunisation programme for children, although current Dutch figures may even underestimate the incidence. Safe and effective MMRV vaccines, in which varicella (V) vaccine is combined with measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), could well replace the MMR vaccine used at present. MMRV vaccines should be administered subcutaneously in two doses. Ten years after the introduction of varicella vaccination in the United States of America, the incidence of complications has decreased …
