Conductive hearing loss (CHL) is a prevalent hearing impairment in humans. The goal of the protocol is to describe a simple surgical procedure for inducing CHL in rodents. The protocol demonstrates CHL by tympanic membrane puncture. Verification of CHL surgery was by otoscope examination and behavioral assessment by clap startle response, both replicable and reliable, and are simple methods to demonstrate hearing loss has occurred. The simple CHL procedure is advantageous due to its reproducibility and flexibility to different pursuits in hearing loss research. The limitations of inducing CHL

In hydraulic fracturing operations, small rounded particles called proppants are mixed and injected with fracture fluids into the targeted formation. The proppant particles hold the fracture open against formation closure stresses, providing a conduit for the reservoir fluid flow. The fracture's capacity to transport fluids is called fracture conductivity and is the product of proppant permeability and fracture width. Prediction of the propped fracture conductivity is essential for fracture design optimization. Several theoretical and few empirical models have been developed in the literature

Olefin-linked covalent organic frameworks (ccCOFs) have shown great advantages in the community since discovery. However, the synthesis of ccCOFs highly relies on unsaturated heteroatom-involved segments (uSHS) to activate C─H bond to produce carbanion and to further condense with aldehydes. Such electron-withdrawing uSHS have long hindered the wide applications of ccCOFs in optoelectronic devices due to the strong electron-withdrawing effect. In this work, we report a carbenium-involved synthesis of ccCOFs without uSHS' participating. As-synthesized ionic ccCOFs show good crystallinity and ul

Background/Objectives: This study presents a time-dependent mathematical model that describes how progressive amyloid-β (Aβ) accumulation drives the gradual decline of cerebral electrical conductivity during Alzheimer's disease (AD). Methods: The formulation captures the coupled evolution of molecular burden and electrophysiological function through a pair of interconnected dynamical processes, enabling a mechanistic link between early biochemical alterations and large-scale neural degradation. Results: Simulations reveal a characteristic pattern in which Aβ levels rise steadily toward a patho

Infrared (IR) machine vision systems have advanced significantly in a range of applications, including autonomous driving, security monitoring, and intelligent night vision. Despite advances in optoelectronic memristors by mixed optical and electrical operation, achieving infrared-specific fully light-modulated vision systems remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate a plasmonic optoelectronic memristor based on Te nanowires-Au nanoparticles/ι-carrageenan film. Localized surface plasmon resonanceassisted optical excitation endows the device with non-volatile, IR-programmable conductance states

Hormonal variations occurring throughout the female reproductive cycle have a significant impact on physical and mental health, particularly due to the influence of estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4). These changes are directly related to alterations in neurological systems, being associated with conditions such as premenstrual syndrome (PMS), premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), and mood disorders during hormonal transition phases, such as perimenopause and menopause. Studies conducted in humans and animal models indicate that these fluctuations affect neurotransmitters, neural plasticit

Numerous surveys using different techniques have been conducted in recent years to accurately classify Alzheimer's disease (AD). This research emphasized the identification of AD through neuroimaging data. However, it is important to identify symptoms as soon as possible when the disease-modifying medications function best during infection before a permanent cognitive impairment develops. The use of automated algorithms to detect the early symptom of AD to this information was very important. Machine Learning (ML) has been proposed for the evaluation of various image segmentation and database

Vitamin B-12 is essential for brain development, neural myelination, and cognitive function. Inadequate vitamin B-12 status during pregnancy and early childhood has been associated with adverse child health outcomes, including impaired cognitive development. However, the underlying mechanisms have not been elucidated. This review was conducted to examine the evidence that links vitamin B-12 and cognition in children. The search strategy resulted in 17 studies: 3 cross-sectional, 1 case-control, and 12 cohort studies, and 1 randomized trial. Cognitive processes assessed included attention, memo

Breathing is essential for survival and under precise neural control. The vagus nerve is a major conduit between lung and brain required for normal respiration. Here, we identify two populations of mouse vagus nerve afferents (P2ry1, Npy2r), each a few hundred neurons, that exert powerful and opposing effects on breathing. Genetically guided anatomical mapping revealed that these neurons densely innervate the lung and send long-range projections to different brainstem targets. Npy2r neurons are largely slow-conducting C fibers, while P2ry1 neurons are largely fast-conducting A fibers that cont

Klippel-Feil syndrome is a clinical triad consisting of short neck, decreased head mobility, and low occipital hairline. Additional deformities of the musculoskeletal and the neural system may also be present. Otological defects occur in about one third of these patients. They are seen either unilaterally or bilaterally and accompanied by deafness which may be perceptive, or mixed, or rarely conductive in type. They are caused either by dysplasia of the labyrinth and/or internal auditory canal, or by the middle and the outer ear. We present a report of a case of Klippel-Feil syndrome with cong

Periodontitis and peri-implantitis are the two most prevalent destructive diseases encountered in clinical dentistry, both of which arise from complex interactions among microbial challenge, host immune responses, and bone metabolism. Although these conditions share similar clinical manifestations, accumulating evidence indicates that the peripheral nervous system plays fundamentally distinct roles in their pathogenesis. In this narrative review, a structured literature search was conducted across multiple databases to synthesize and weigh current evidence on neuro-osteo-immune regulation in o

Somatic symptom disorder (SSD) is characterized by persistent physical symptoms that cannot be fully explained by structural abnormalities or laboratory findings. However, the underlying neural mechanisms of SSD remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate functional brain abnormalities in SSD patients presenting predominantly with chest pain using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). A total of 102 participants were prospectively enrolled, including 56 patients with SSD and 46 healthy controls (HCs). All participants underwent clinical assessments and st

INTRODUCTION: Dyslipidemia contributes to many retinal diseases, but underlying lipid processing pathways are not fully understood. Peroxisomes oxidize very long-chain fatty acids and generate docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Mutations in peroxisomal genes can result in severe neural retinal dysfunction. However, therapeutic approaches for peroxisomal diseases remain scarce, and dietary strategies yield inconsistent results.
OBJECTIVES: This study sought to elucidate retinal metabolic adaptations resulting from impaired peroxisomal fatty acid oxidation and to evaluate the therapeutic potential of

Neural states of impairment from intoxicating substances, including cannabis, are poorly understood. Cannabinoid 1 receptors, the main target of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary intoxicating cannabinoid in cannabis, are densely localized within prefrontal cortex; therefore, prefrontal brain regions are key locations to examine brain changes that characterize acute intoxication. We conducted a double-blind, randomized, cross-over study in adults, aged 18-55 years, who use cannabis regularly, to determine the effects of acute intoxication on prefrontal cortex resting-state measures, as

BACKGROUND: Sexual dimorphism is obvious not only in the overall architecture of human body, but also in intraoral details. Many studies have found a correlation between gender and morphometric features of teeth, such as mesio-distal diameter, buccal-lingual diameter and height. However, it's still difficult to detect gender through the observation of intraoral photographs, with accuracy around 50%. The purpose of this study was to explore the possibility of automatically telling gender from intraoral photographs by deep neural network, and to provide a novel angle for individual oral treatmen

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) exhibit distinct abnormal postures, including neck-down, stooped postures, and Pisa syndrome, collectively termed "abnormal posture" henceforth. In the previous study, when assuming an upright stance, patients with PD exhibit heightened instability in contrast to healthy individuals with disturbance, implying that abnormal postures serve as compensatory mechanisms to mitigate sway during static standing. However, limited studies have explored the relationship between abnormal posture and sway in the context of static standing. Increased muscle tone (i.e.,

Transplantation of neural stem cells (NSCs) has been proposed as an alternative novel therapy to replace damaged neural circuitry after ischemic stroke onset. Nonetheless, albeit the potential of these cells for stroke therapy, many critical challenges are yet to be overcome to reach clinical applications. The major limitation of the NSC-based therapy is its inability to retain most of the donor stem cells after grafting into an ischemic brain area which is lacking of essential oxygen and nutrients for the survival of transplanted cells. Low cell survival rate limits the capacity of NSCs to re
