Epistaxis though common, is rarely life threatening. Routinely nose pinching, anterior find posterior nasal packing and endoscopic cauterization of bleeding points is sufficient to control epistaxis in 99% of the cases. It is mandatory to rule out local and systemic causes before labeling a case as idiopathic by using a battery of investigative modalities. Here are two interesting cases of epistaxis which did not respond to conventional therapeutic modalities in which transantral internal maxillary artery ligation was attempted leading to complete cure.

Rhinitis is characterised by the presence of two or more of the following symptoms: nasal blockage, sneezing, rhinorrhoea (a persistent watery mucous discharge from the nose) and nasal itching which last for an hour or more on most days. Allergy is the commonest cause of chronic symptoms. Patients with allergic rhinitis often have a clear relationship between symptoms and allergen exposure, for example, during the tree/grass pollen season. Viral or bacterial infection is the commonest acute cause of symptoms and is usually self-limiting.

The middle facial necrosis is a rare pathology that can be found related to multiple processes that can provoque it: traumatic, chemical, infections, inflammatory and tumorals. So for its diagnosis we require a wide differential diagnosis. We present a clinic case of a nose aspirated cocaine female patient who came to our department with a middle-facial necrosis not telling to us in the anamnesis the cocaine use. We were obliged to do multiple diagnostic tests searching other possible causes.

The existence of a combined benign schwannoma and lymphoma presenting as a nasal polyp has not been described in the English literature. We are reporting this rare combination in a 50-year-old male whose presenting symptoms were nasal obstruction, nasal deformity and headache. Examination of the left nasal cavity revealed a mass which was confined to the nose on computed tomography (CT) scan examination. Histopathology of the mass revealed a major component to be a benign schwannoma and a minor component a large B-cell lymphoma.

The majority of bad breath originates within the oral cavity. However, it is also possible that it is caused by other extra-oral sources. Ear-nose-and-throat causes and systemic diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, uremia, liver failure, pulmonary carcinoma, bronchiectasis, are the most frequent problems. In 65-85% of the cases of bad breath, we find the cause in the parodontium and/or tongue. Components from tongue coating and periodontal pockets circulate through the saliva in the whole oral cavity and also reach the tonsils.

When looking at some figures of the Cranach altar in the St. Wolfgang church at Schneeberg/Saxony, congenital syphilis and other diseases must be taken into diagnostic consideration. An earlier edition of this magazine contained a reference to a quite similar, possibly luetic saddle nose on a carved figure in the monastery of Waldsassen, which was made almost 200 years later. For iconographical reasons and because of the very early time of its creation around 1530, the deliberate representation of such a diagnosis, at least for Schneeberg, seems doubtful.

Rhinophyma is a disfiguring soft-tissue hypertrophy of the nose. It is an uncommon disease that primarily affects Caucasian men in the fifth to seventh decades of life. Nine cases from the authors' series and a comparison of results following various treatment modalities are presented. Eight of the patients were Caucasian and one was African American. Excision of the diseased tissue with a scalpel or Goulian dermatome using loupe magnification provided the safest means of preserving the underlying sebaceous gland fundi that permit spontaneous re-epithelialization with the least scarring.

A fibroglandular hamartoma of the nasal cavity was found in a patient with nasal polyposis. The only symptom had been bilateral nasal obstruction for years. The tumor was removed by lateral rhinotomy. Our initial differential diagnosis included nasal glioma and inverted papilloma, but this rare tumor was not suspected. Four years after surgery, the patient is well and the risk of recurrence is deemed to be very low. Surgeons and pathologists must be aware of these and other uncommon tumors of the nose because some may require special diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Johanson-Blizzard syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by aplasia of alae nasi, pancreatic insufficiency, aplasia cutis, anorectal anomalies and postnatal growth restriction. In this case report, we describe the prenatal sonographic findings of Johanson-Blizzard syndrome in a 21-week pregnancy of a consanguineous couple. Sonographic findings of aplastic alae nasi (beak-like nose) and dilated sigmoid colon led to the prenatal diagnosis. This is the first report of the prenatal sonographic diagnosis of Johanson-Blizzard syndrome.

Prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is common in the adult US population, but likely is underestimated as many patients present with symptoms other than heartburn or regurgitation. Ears, nose, throat, pulmonary, and cardiac symptoms also frequently are related to GERD. Fractures of the nasal complex are the most common facial fracture. This is due to the fact that the nose is the most anteriorly projecting facial structure and is a composite structure of bone, cartilage, and soft tissue. Furthermore, the forces required to cause significant injury are less than that causing other facial fractures. Because of the wide range of activities and mishaps that cause nasal trauma, the instruments of injury range from bicycle handles to elbows. The causes, clinical anatomy, and future considerations regarding nasal septal trauma are discussed in this article.

We report on three brothers, aged 6, 3, and 2 years, with a hitherto undescribed combination of microcephaly, facial abnormalities, micromelia, and mild mental retardation. Their facial abnormalities included a forehead with bitemporal constriction, upslanting palpebral fissures, synophrys, a short nose with anteverted nostrils, a short columella, a cupid bow-shaped, thin vermilion border of the upper lip, and micrognathia. Their mother had similar clinical manifestations, but was of normal intelligence. The disease was apparently transmitted in a dominant fashion.

A simple technique can be used to prevent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage through the nose and the wound in translabyrinthine surgery. This method, evolved from Glasscock's technique of packing the eustachian tube, adds only 5 to 10 minutes to the procedure. The procedure was modeled in the temporal bones of 20 human cadavers, and the findings are described. With this technique, no nasal CSF leaks occurred in a consecutive series of 25 patients who underwent acoustic tumor surgery. Factors thought to be necessary for the success of the technique are discussed.

Epistaxis typically originates from the nasal septum when the nasal mucosa overlying a dilated blood vessel is injured. Epistaxis may, however, signal an underlying condition such as a coagulation disorder, so the treating physician must be alert for signs of serious illness. Most nosebleeds stop spontaneously within 5 minutes with or without pressure to the forehead, nose, or upper lip. Some require anterior nasal packing. A few arise from posterior arteries and require anterior-posterior nasal packing and a referral.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common disease with many typical and atypical forms of presentation. In the classic presentations of GERD with heartburn and regurgitation, esophageal testing, except for endoscopy, is only required for poorly responding patients or prior to surgical therapy. The atypical presentations of GERD, including chest pain, asthma, and ear, nose, and throat complaints, frequently are not associated with heartburn or regurgitation. Esophageal testing, particularly 24-hour pH monitoring is key to making the diagnosis and ensuring adequate acid suppression.

45 patients with UCLP/UCL and BCLP/BCL had a lip repair at a mean age of 4 months according to the principles of Delaire from 1989 to 1993. Their aesthetic results and the influence upon growth and symmetry of the face was evaluated by standardized checking of possible negative points of the lip, nose and alveolus, by measuring different distances of the mid-face in standardized photographs and by comparing the data with the literature. The aesthetic results are equal to other studies and there are some indications of a better stimulation of growth and harmonization of the face.

The present work shows 13 cases of inverted papillomas of the nasal fossae treated at the Fundación Jiménez Díaz from 1954 to 1992. Four of them were found in the lateral wall of the nose, one in the nasal septum and the other one in the frontal sinus. The latter coexisted with a transient carcinoma. One of them suffered a secondary malignant process. This paper discusses the etiology of these tumors, their histology, clinical features, radiological aspects, trend to relapse or malignancy, as well as the most effective treatment in the authors' opinion.

A newborn male patient presented with complete cutaneous syndactyly of fingers 3-5 in the left hand and fingers 4-5 in the right hand. The mother and maternal grandmother were born with the same hand malformation. Facial features in the mother showed a thin nose and small teeth; eyes were normal. In the grandmother, teeth had been very small with enamel hypoplasia; eyes were normal. The present family provides evidence of the variable expression in oculodentodigital dysplasia. Inheritance is autosomal dominant.

The authors discuss four cases of indigenous strongyloidiasis, which were detected in northern France during the past twenty years. In our hemisphere, the limits of this helminthiasis range between the 50th and the 53rd parallels of latitude. In two cases, indoor contamination must be suspected; in the third case, transmission has been facilitated by insalubrity and crowding; the fourth case was related to the activities of a dustman in camping sites. Nose bleedings were noticed in two cases and the haemorrhagic manifestations in strongyloidiasis are mentioned.
