Using Group Model Building to Describe the System Driving Unhealthy Eating and Identify Intervention Points: A Participatory, Stakeholder Engagement Approach in the Caribbean.

Many Small Island Developing States of the Caribbean experience a triple burden of malnutrition with high rates of obesity, undernutrition in children, and iron deficiency anemia in women of reproductive age, driven by an inadequate, unhealthy diet. This study aimed to map the complex dynamic systems driving unhealthy eating and to identify potential points for intervention in three dissimilar countries. Stakeholders from across the food system in Jamaica (n = 16), St. Kitts and Nevis (n = 19), and St. Vincent and the Grenadines (n = 6) engaged with researchers in two group model building (GMB

Association of Plasma Total Cysteine and Anthropometric Status in 6-30 Months Old Indian Children.

High-quality protein has been associated with child growth; however, the role of the amino acid cysteine remains unclear. The aim was to measure the extent to which plasma total cysteine (tCys) concentration is associated with anthropometric status in children aged 6-30 months living in New Delhi, India. The study was a prospective cohort study including 2102 children. We calculated Z-scores for height-for-age (HAZ), weight-for-height (WHZ), or weight-for-age (WAZ) according to the WHO Child Growth Standards. We used multiple regression models to estimate the association between tCys and the a

Fetal Head Growth during Early to Mid-Gestation Associated with Weight Gain in Mothers with Hyperemesis Gravidarum: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

The epigenetic impact of malnutrition in mothers with hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) on their offspring has not been fully elucidated. Recently, several reports have demonstrated that children born to mothers with HG were small for gestational age and had low birth weight, reduced insulin sensitivity, and neurodevelopmental delays during childhood. Therefore, we examined the relationship between fetal growth and changes in the maternal body weight in HG cases. A total of 34 patients with HG were hospitalized and delivered at term between 2009 and 2012. The records of 69 cases of pregnant women wi

A descriptive study of double burden of malnutrition in mothers of children with severe acute malnutrition admitted in Children Hospital and Institute of Child Health, Multan.

OBJECTIVES: Behçet's disease (BD) is a multisystem autoimmune disease of unknown origin typically affecting the triad of oral and genital mucosa and the eye. Limited data are available in the literature regarding the otolaryngology-related manifestations of BD, particularly in northern Europeans. This is a novel study detailing surprising and significant laryngeal structural changes in a northern European cohort of BD. METHODS: Patients meeting the International Study Group for Behçet's Disease (ISGBD) and the International Criteria for Behçet's Disease (ICBD) criteria for diagnosis were iden

[Child malnutrition, infrastructure and income in Mexico].

OBJECTIVE: Explain the variation in child malnutrition (CM), understood as low height for age (0 to 5 years old) for the period 1999-2006. MATERIALS AND METHODS: State estimations of child malnutrition and several indicators of subjacent probable causes of CM were employed, such as poverty indices, state product per capita, women scholar attainment and access to health and the sewage system. Panel data regression analysis with fixed and random effects were used to analyze the data. RESULTS: The results indicate that the lack to access to health and sewage systems and poverty worsen CM, where

Improving the neurodevelopmental outcomes of low-birthweight infants.

Infants born with low birthweight (LBW) have poorer neurodevelopmental outcomes compared with their term counterparts with appropriate weight for gestational age. The perinatal period is a time of high energy and high nutrient needs, and any process, such as preterm birth, poor nutrition or placental insufficiency, that interrupts the concentrated flow of nutrients to the fetus may result in babies with LBW. Therefore, it makes logical sense that at least part of the cognitive deficits may be explained by nutritional deprivation. The nutrients commonly deficient in LBW infants include protein

Predictors of early-onset permanent hearing loss in malnourished infants in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The objective of this study was to determine the predictors of early-onset permanent hearing loss (EPHL) among undernourished infants in a low-income country where routine screening for developmental disabilities in early childhood is currently unattainable. All infants attending four community-based clinics for routine immunization who met the criteria for undernutrition by the Growth Standards of the World Health Organization (WHO) based on weight-for-age, weight-for-length and body-mass-index-for-age were enlisted. EPHL was determined after two-stage screening with transient-evoked otoacous

Lessons from successful micronutrient programs. Part III: program impact.

Micronutrient-deficiency control programs have been greatly extended at the national level in the last 10 to 15 years. However, rigorous evaluations of these are scarce, so that conclusions on impact are tentative and based mainly on indirect evidence. The coverage of vitamin A capsule distribution programs has exceeded 70% in most study countries. In countries implementing national iodized salt programs, the coverage reaches 60% to 90% of households with adequately iodized salt. Of the three micronutrients, coverage of iron tablet supplementation is the least well documented due to inadequate

Childhood obesity: a societal problem to solve.

In contrast to other threats to American children's health, the treatment and prevention of childhood obesity are considered the responsibility of individual children and their parents. This pressure exists in the context of the societal stigmatization of overweight children and the powerful environmental inducements aimed directly at children to eat nutritionally poor foods. Parents of overweight children are left in the difficult position of fearing the social and health consequences of their child's obesity, and fighting a losing battle against the omnipotent presence of the media and const

Malnutrition in long-term haemodialysis survivors.

BACKGROUND: Long survival is now common in patients with end-stage renal disease owing to improvement in dialysis techniques and kidney transplantation. As malnutrition is commonly reported in dialysis patients, we evaluated the nutritional status of patients treated with haemodialysis (HD) for more than 20 years. METHODS: Ten patients (59.5 years old; 4F/6M; HD treatment for 304 months; group A) underwent an extensive nutritional examination and were compared to a control group of 10 patients treated with HD for an average of 51 months and strictly matched for age (58.6 years old), gender, a

Oral protein calorie supplementation for children with chronic disease.

BACKGROUND: Growth failure and poor nutritional status are common features in children with chronic diseases due to reduced appetite, malabsorption and increased nutritional requirements associated with some diseases. The provision of oral protein calorie supplements is one of a number of interventions used to improve nutritional status in these children. The use of these products, which are expensive, may be associated with a number of adverse effects, for example, they may effect development of normal eating behaviour patterns or lead to unpleasant symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea. Managing oral health related nutrition issues of high risk infants and children.

Dental professionals are in an ideal position to recognize children at high nutritional and oral health risk and provide early intervention. Some of the children at highest risk for nutritional and oral health problems include those born prematurely, children with failure to thrive, those on multiple medications, special needs children with developmental delays, children with gastroesophageal reflux, and those with lactose intolerance. Nutrition and oral health guidelines are provided to aid the dental practitioner in providing preventive nutrition intervention to these high risk children.

Malnutrition and experimental lung allergy.

BACKGROUND: Although it is commonly accepted that the immune response is affected by malnutrition there are very few data about its effect in allergic diseases. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of malnutrition in allergic lung inflammation. METHODS: An anaphylactic reaction was induced in rat lungs and the increased vascular permeability was measured in the trachea, internal and external bronchi and parenchyma by the Evans blue extravasation method. These studies were conducted in two dietary groups: one fed a normoproteic diet (18%) and the other a hypop

City studies on nutrition: Bangalore, India.

The size of urban population in developing Asian countries grows at a faster rate than in the developed West. Urban cities in India are being crushed by the onslaught of population growth, migration of rural poor and industrialization, the urbanization in turn inducing social and economic changes. During the decade 1972-81, India's population grew by 25%, urban population by over 40% and that of Bangalore city by 76%. The 1991 Census records the population of Bangalore city at 4.1 million, though the decennial growth rate seems to have begun to decline. The current sex ratio is 900 females to

Osteopenia assessed by body composition analysis is related to malnutrition in alcoholic patients.

Osteopenia is frequent among alcoholics. Its pathogenesis seems to be multifactorial, including ethanol intake, hormonal changes, liver cirrhosis, and malnutrition. Our objective is to determine the relative role of malnutrition on bone loss. One hundred and eighty-one male alcoholic patients, drinkers of more than 80 g ethanol/day, were included, recording data on the intensity of alcoholism, liver cirrhosis, nutritional assessment based on feeding habits, body mass index (BMI), midarm anthropometrics, subjective nutritional assessment, lean and fat mass by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (D
