INTRODUCTION: Surgical resection is a cornerstone of curative treatment for early-stage lung cancer. Multimodal prehabilitation, a comprehensive, patient-centered program integrating physical exercise, nutritional status, and psychological support, has emerged as a promising approach to enhance patients' physiological and psychological resilience prior to surgery. While multimodal prehabilitation is valuable for optimizing patients' tolerance of oncological treatment, there is a scarcity of studies incorporating multimodal interventions, likely due to the absence of clear guidelines for lung c

INTRODUCTION: Sarcopenia, characterized by progressive skeletal muscle loss, has emerged as a significant public health concern, with a global prevalence of 10-27%. While traditionally studied in geriatric populations, recent evidence indicates its impact on individuals aged 40 and above, with early manifestations of muscle decline. Primary care settings play a pivotal role in the early identification and management of sarcopenia, facilitating timely diagnosis and intervention. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of sarcopenia and its associated factors among individuals aged 40 and abo

Older adults living in nursing homes (NH) are considered a population group that could be at risk in terms of nutrition, even more so than their community-dwelling peers. Evidence on the nutritional status of NH residents is scarce, as they are commonly excluded from population-based dietary studies. This is also the case in Slovenia. In the presented pilot study, we assessed the intake of macronutrients as well as the intake and status of vitamin D and vitamin B12 on a sample of NH and NH daycare center users to explore the need for a larger representative study. The pilot study included 37 p

OBJECTIVES: Hip osteoarthritis and knee osteoarthritis cause significant disability and pain in older adults, often leading to hip or knee replacement surgery. Prehabilitation programs have been established for these surgeries, but there are few programs for orthogeriatrics. We evaluated the feasibility of a new multimodal prehabilitation program (MPP) for older adults before hip or knee replacement due to arthrosis: the Prehabilitation for Os (PRE4OS) study.
DESIGN: We conducted a multicenter feasibility study in the Greater Paris area.
SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Eligible adults were aged ≥7

INTRODUCTION: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is a standard treatment for aortic stenosis, particularly in older adults. Reduced exercise capacity and frailty significantly impact outcomes in TAVR patients, yet current management lacks strategies to address these issues. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of home-based mobile-guided exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation in TAVR patients, led by a multidisciplinary team with clear progression milestones.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The study involves 90 patients aged 60-89 in a single centre who will be randomised to a 3-month

To reduce the use of antibiotics, research into nutritional strategies designed to improve the gut health of weaned pigs is underway. This study sought to examine the effects of reducing dietary crude protein (CP) and/or supplementing the feed with sodium butyrate protected by the sodium salts of medium-chain fatty acids on the growth performance and gut health of weaned piglets. Ninety-six weaned piglets (Landrace × large white, 21 days of age) were allotted to four experimental treatments for 14 d. The experimental design was factorial with 2 CP levels and 2 feed-additive doses (0 vs. 1 kg/t

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Vegetarians and vegans are more vulnerable to vitamin B12 deficiency with severe risks of megaloblastic anemia, cognitive decline, neuropathy, and depression. An easy and simple method of supplementation consists of taking one weekly dosage of 2000 μg. However, single large oral doses of vitamin B12 are poorly absorbed. The present research evaluates the ability of two different sublingual dosages of vitamin B12 (350 μg/week vs 2000 μg/week) in improving cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12) nutritional status in vegans and vegetarians with a marginal deficiency.
METHODS: A 12-week

Infants with short bowel syndrome (SBS) and associated liver failure are often referred for combined liver/intestinal transplantation. We speculated that in some young children, nutritional autonomy would be possible with restoration of normal liver function. Features we believed to predict nutritional autonomy include history of at least 50% enteral tolerance, age less than 2 yr, and no underlying intestinal disease. This report documents our experience with liver transplantation alone in children with liver failure associated with SBS. Twenty-three children with SBS and end-stage liver disea

Objective: Diabetes is a defining disease of the 21st century because of its rising prevalence, association with obesity, and enormous health impact. Abundant evidence shows that lifestyle interventions can delay or prevent type 2 diabetes (T2D) in adults, offer relief, and sometimes achieve complete remission. Despite this empowering message, there are no clinical practice guidelines that focus primarily on lifestyle interventions as first-line management of prediabetes and T2D. Our objective, therefore, is to offer pragmatic, trustworthy, and evidence-based guidance for clinicians in using t

Urban areas are sprawling and densifying worldwide, with the main negative impacts on biodiversity, yet they are also increasingly valued to contribute to conservation efforts. Urban food resources are typically modified and heterogeneous due to human influence, resulting in pronounced gradients that shape the feeding of urban-dwelling species. These conditions influence biodiversity by filtering species through feeding traits and reshaping the diets of urban-adapted species. Here, I synthesise research on arthropod feeding behaviour in urban ecosystems, focusing specifically on diet breadth a

This study assessed how high-moisture extrusion (HME) alters the structural, functional, and in vitro digestibility properties of two barley flours with contrasting starch architectures: waxy barley (Annapurna®) and high-amylose barley (Hilose®). The flours were processed at three moisture contents (50%, 60%, and 70%) and two screw speeds (100 and 150 rpm). Moisture content emerged as the main processing factor influencing the response of both barley matrices, although the magnitude and direction of the changes depended strongly on barley composition. At 50% moisture and 150 rpm, the higher sp

Lycium ruthenicum Murr., commonly known as black goji berry, is a solanaceous shrub distributed in saline-alkaline desert environments of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and other arid regions. Its growing interest as a functional food resource is closely related to a rich nutritional profile and a phytochemical pattern that differs from that of the common red goji berry (Lycium barbarum). The most distinctive feature is the abundance of anthocyanins, particularly petunidin-derived compounds, which contribute to its dark fruit color and many of its reported biological properties. This review brings

Many transfer programs target women based on evidence that mothers are more likely than fathers to allocate resources toward child welfare. However, findings on gendered impacts remain mixed-likely because parental knowledge, preferences, and household decision-making roles differ across contexts. In this study, we experimentally vary the intrahousehold informational context itself through a randomized controlled trial in rural Ethiopia. Specifically, employing a factorial design, we cross-randomize two key dimensions: (1) which parent receives nutrition behavior change communication (BCC) - n

Infant milk formula (IMF) is designed to support infants during a highly sensitive stage of development, yet its trace-level bioactive composition remains less explored than its nutritional profile. Among these minor constituents, hormones are of particular interest because they link infant nutrition with endocrine regulation, food safety, and analytical chemistry. Hormones in IMF may originate naturally from milk-derived ingredients, result from veterinary practices, or occur as hormone-like endocrine-active residues. However, their determination is challenging due to their low concentrations
