Agenesis of two or more consecutive adjacent permanent teeth (consecutive tooth agenesis, CTA) is a serious manifestation of oligodontia requiring long-term, multi-disciplinary treatment. Therefore, the present study investigated the characteristics of the CTA pattern in orthodontic patients with non-syndromic oligodontia. Using panoramic radiographs, the number of agenetic permanent teeth excluding third molars in non-syndromic orthodontic patients was evaluated, and patients with six or more agenetic teeth (oligodontia group, n = 97) and with one to five agenetic teeth (hypodontia group, n =

OBJECTIVE: Baicalin mediates bone metabolism and has shown protective activity against periodontal tissue damage in a rat model of periodontitis. Therefore, we hypothesized that baicalin may inhibit the root resorption that occurs during orthodontic tooth movement and examined its effect on the histological changes in periodontal tissue that occur during tooth movement.
METHODS: First molars of rats were subjected to traction using excessive orthodontic force to produce a root resorption model. Rats in the baicalin group received baicalin for 3 weeks during tooth movement, and the amount of f

PURPOSE: During orthodontic tooth movement, pressure and tension zones develop in the periodontal ligament, and periodontal ligament fibroblasts (PDLF) become exposed to mechanical strain. Enhanced salt (NaCl) concentrations are known to modulate responses of PDLF and immune cells to different stimuli like mechanical strain. Here, we investigated the impact of tensile strain on the gene expression profile of PDLF under normal (NS) and high salt (HS) conditions.
METHODS: After preincubation under NS or HS (+40 mM NaCl in medium) conditions for 24 h, PDLF were stretched 16% for 48 h using custo

BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW: Previous studies have suggested that occlusal discrepancy is a risk factor contributing to periodontal disease. Occlusal discrepancy could increase the risk of developing infrabony defects. The authors present a case of a patient with severe periodontitis who exhibited many infrabony defects in the molar region due to malocclusion-induced trauma. They report the 7-year treatment outcomes of the patient after periodontal regenerative and comprehensive orthodontic therapies for functional recovery with implant prosthodontics.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 56-year-old woman sought

Periodontal remodeling and alveolar bone resorption and formation play essential roles during orthodontic tooth movement (OTM). In the process, human periodontal ligament cells (HPDLCs) sense and respond to orthodontic forces, contributing to the alveolar bone formation. However, the underlying mechanism in this process is not fully elucidated. In the present study, cyclic stress stimulus was applied on HPDLCs to mimic the orthodontic forces during OTM. Our results demonstrated that cyclic stretch promoted the osteogenic differentiation of HPDLCs. Moreover, our data suggested that yes-associat

BACKGROUND There is strong evidence that malocclusion and body posture are interdependent. The relationship between improvement of nasopharyngeal airway, correction of malocclusion by orthodontic treatment or orthognathic surgery, and changes in body posture were evaluated in several studies. The purpose of the present study was to analyze the effect of the orthodontic treatment with Twin-block appliance on body posture. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study group consisted of 23 children (mean age 12.45 (1.06) years). They were orthopedically (back shape analysis) and orthodontically (cephalometric

BACKGROUND: Usually, morphological parameters of the teeth are recorded to help assess the indication for orthodontic treatment. It is assumed that significant deviations from average values compromise the quality of life. The aim of this study is to analyse the impact of overbite and overjet on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of children and adolescents.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 748 subjects, aged 9.5-15.5 years, participated in the LIFE child project of the University of Leipzig, where they underwent a general medical and dental examination. Overbite and overjet were me

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Bone resorption and inhibition of bone formation occur on the compressed side during orthodontic tooth movement. Bone formation inhibitory factors such as sclerostin (encoded by SOST) are secreted on the compressed side by periodontal ligament (PDL) cells. PDL cells control bone metabolism, and compressed PDL cells inhibit bone formation during orthodontic tooth movement. The aim of this study was to identify the inhibitory factors of bone formation in PDL cells.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Changes in SOST expression and subsequent protein release from human PDL (hPDL) cells we

PURPOSE: Impacted, in particular transmigrated, lower canines are rare. If they transmigrate, then the most common treatment is extraction. Alternatively, the native tooth can be preserved; however, management is complex. This report describes a decision-making flowchart (DMFC) with surgical strategies for the management of impacted lower canines.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-six patients had impacted lower canines, of which 16 were transmigrated. A preliminary version of the DMFC was used for the development of treatment plans to decide which strategy to apply to these complex cases. After r
