A qualitative study to understand the Duchenne muscular dystrophy experience from the parent/patient perspective.

BACKGROUND: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a rare, severe, fatal neuromuscular disease characterized by progressive atrophy and muscle weakness, resulting in loss of ambulation, decreased upper body function, and impaired cardiorespiratory function. This study aimed to generate qualitative evidence to describe the primary symptoms and impacts of DMD in ambulatory and non-ambulatory patients as reported by patient/caregiver dyads. Information was also gathered on expectations for future DMD treatments. METHODS: Forty-six dyads (caregiver and patients with DMD aged 4 to 22 years) particip

Parental concern for clinically vulnerable child during first 18 months of the COVID pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The uncertainties surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic have been associated with increased parental concern. The aim of this study is to explore if this increased level of concern is associated with certain individual/household characteristics or if parents adapted to the ever-changing realities of the COVID-19 pandemic over time. METHODS: This prospective study explored COVID-19 concern trajectories and associated family characteristics of 765 UK parents caring for an immunosuppressed child during the first 18 months of the pandemic using growth mixture modelling. Qualitative analys

Factors Associated With Follow-Up Visits in Parents With Myopic Children Wearing Orthokeratology Lens.

BACKGROUND: Orthokeratology (Ortho-k) is an effective method for slowing the progression of myopia and correcting refractive error in school children. Although parents of children aged < 10 years play a major role in Ortho-k lens care, they have a generally low level of compliance in performing regular follow-up visits. PURPOSE: This study was developed to analyze the associations between follow-up visits by parents of Ortho-k lens wearers aged < 10 years and, respectively, the Ortho-k-related knowledge of these parents and information resources promoting Ortho-k use. METHODS: A cross-sectio

Comparison of mental health in individuals with primary ciliary dyskinesia, cystic fibrosis, and parent caregivers.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with chronic respiratory diseases and caregivers are at higher risk for depression and anxiety. Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) and cystic fibrosis (CF) are both rare genetic diseases, characterized by recurrent respiratory infections. This study compared depression and anxiety in people with PCD (pwPCD) and CF (pwCF), and caregivers, using the screening tools recommended in the CF guidelines. METHODS: Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) were administered to a PCD and CF sample. Given that PCD is extremely rare, they were ma

Validation of a parent report on externalizing symptoms scale: A downward extension of the behavioral health screen.

Externalizing problems are common in children ages 6-14, can have lifelong consequences, and may pose a particular risk when combined with other risk factors and symptoms (like depression and anxiety). Schools are uniquely positioned to assess and address these types of behavioral health concerns, but many school-based assessments do not focus on mental health distress (partially because they often lack the infrastructure for identification, screening, and referral). To address this gap, the Behavioral Health Works program student mental health software system has integrated teacher training,

Parents' dilemma: A therapeutic decision for children with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) type 1.

BACKGROUND: SMA type 1 is a severe neurodegenerative disorder that, in the absence of curative treatment, leads to death before 1 year of age without ventilatory support. Three innovative therapies are available to increase life expectancy. PURPOSE: (i) To increase knowledge about parents' experiences with their decision to have opted for an innovative therapy; (ii) to assess the middle-term psychological consequences in the parents' lives. METHODS: We used an in-depth interview; a self-administrated questionnaire and self-report scales (BDI-II, STAI-Y, PSI-SF, SOC-13, PBA, DAS 16 and FICD).

The nexus between gender, parental supervision, and opioid misuse among justice-involved adolescents.

Justice-involved adolescents (JIA) are at higher risk for opioid misuse (OM) and opioid-related overdose than nonoffending adolescents. Untreated OM can lead to severe consequences (e.g., trauma), which may be harsher for female JIA. Therefore, examining risk and protective factors, such as parental supervision, is essential to identify factors that may impact OM. The current study used a statewide, cross-sectional dataset including 79,960 JIA from the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice. Stratified logistic regression analyses were conducted. Results indicated that JIA who experienced spor
