Effects of trauma and religiosity on self-esteem.

Self-esteem is often lower among persons who have experienced trauma, but religiosity may ameliorate these psychological effects. The purpose of this paper was to examine the relationships among religiosity, self-esteem, and childhood exposure to trauma, utilizing data from the National Comorbidity Survey, a large (N = 8,098) nationally representative population survey in the 48 contiguous states of the USA that assessed religious practices, self-esteem, and exposure to trauma. Exposure to trauma in childhood was assessed through self-report of presence or absence of childhood physical abuse,

Beyond engagement: Interactive response systems, student attitudes, and technology acceptance in University EFL classrooms.

Interactive Response Systems (IRS) are increasingly used in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms to support participation, feedback, and interaction. However, less is known about how IRS-supported instruction influences students' broader classroom attitudes and how students' acceptance of IRS can be explained from a technology-acceptance perspective. This study examined whether changes in university EFL students' classroom attitudes differed between an IRS-supported intact class and a traditional-instruction intact class, and investigated whether perceived usefulness, perceived ease

BRIGHT pathways: recommendations to improve the developmental follow-up of children with CHD in Canada - protocol for a nominal group study.

INTRODUCTION: Systematic developmental follow-up for children with congenital heart disease (CHD) is essential for the timely detection of developmental delays and disorders and to put in place the supports and resources necessary to maximise function and support family well-being. Best practice guidelines recommend follow-up for children with CHD at high risk of developmental delays. However, many countries, including Canada, have faced barriers such as limitations in financial and human resources which have limited their ability to implement these important neurodevelopmental follow-up progr

Survival, trust, and compassion: persistent HIV prevention concerns faced by Black sexual and gender minority communities in the US South - a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Members of Black sexual and gender minority (BSGM) groups in the Southern US experience disparities across all pillars of the HIV prevention continuum. Social network strategy (SNS) is an intervention that trains people with reasons to test for HIV to reach out to peers to increase HIV testing and may improve uptake of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). We conducted formative research to design an enhanced SNS to implement within partner services. METHODS: In 2022-2024, we conducted four focus groups among HIV public health services staff and 12 in-depth interviews with local health

Digital device viewing behaviour in children.

INTRODUCTION: Habitual viewing behaviour is widely believed to be an important contributing factor to the onset and progression of myopia and may be task dependent. The purpose of this study was to quantify the habitual viewing distance of children performing five different tasks on a smartphone digital device. METHODS: The real-time viewing distance in 38 children with their habitual correction was measured using software (MyopiaApp) on a handheld (Google Pixel 3) device. Five tasks were performed in a randomised sequence: playing a game, watching video in a light (680 lux) and dark (5.5 lux

Retrospective Comparison of Patients Evaluated for Pediatric Autoimmune Encephalitis with Typical and Atypical Premorbid Neuropsychiatric Development.

PURPOSE: Patients with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) (i.e. autism, developmental delay, early-onset psychiatric or seizure disorders) increasingly seek evaluation of new or exacerbated symptoms concerning for autoimmune encephalitis (AE). Clinical AE evaluation can be challenging in NDD patients with symptom overlap between anti-neuronal autoimmunity and baseline atypical neurodevelopment. This study sought to explore differences in AE features by neurodevelopmental status. METHODS: This retrospective chart review included 67 children with typical development (TD) or NDD evaluated for AE
