Outcomes of extremely-low-birth-weight infants between 1982 and 1988.

Infants with birth weights under 750 g are disproportionately represented in perinatal mortality and morbidity rates. We reviewed the outcomes of 98 infants delivered at our perinatal center between July 1982 and June 1985 (period 1) whose lengths of gestation were 20 or more weeks and whose birth weights were under 750 g, and compared them with the outcomes of 129 such infants born between July 1985 and June 1988 (period 2). The frequency of cesarean section increased from 12 to 19 percent between the two periods. During the entire six-year period, 12 percent of the infants with birth weights…

Global, regional, and national progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 3.2 for neonatal and child health: all-cause and cause-specific mortality findings from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019.

BACKGROUND: Sustainable Development Goal 3.2 has targeted elimination of preventable child mortality, reduction of neonatal death to less than 12 per 1000 livebirths, and reduction of death of children younger than 5 years to less than 25 per 1000 livebirths, for each country by 2030. To understand current rates, recent trends, and potential trajectories of child mortality for the next decade, we present the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 findings for all-cause mortality and cause-specific mortality in children younger than 5 years of age, with multiple

Contributory factors and potentially avoidable neonatal encephalopathy associated with perinatal asphyxia.

BACKGROUND: The recently published monograph, Neonatal encephalopathy and neurologic outcome, from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists calls for a root cause analysis to identify components of care that contributed to cases of neonatal encephalopathy to design better practices, surveillance mechanisms, and systems. All cases of infants born in New Zealand with moderate and severe neonatal encephalopathy were reported to the New Zealand Perinatal and Maternal Mortality Review Committee from 2010. A national clinical review of these individual cases has not previously been un

Prophylactic versus selective use of surfactant for preventing morbidity and mortality in preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Clinical trials have proven that surfactant therapy is effective in improving the immediate need for respiratory support and the clinical outcome of premature newborns (Soll 1992, Jobe 1993). Trials have studied a wide variety of surfactant preparations used either to prevent (prophylactic or delivery room administration) or treat (selective or rescue administration) respiratory distress syndrome. Using either treatment strategy, significant reductions in the incidence of pneumothorax, as well as significant improvement in survival, have been noted. It is unclear if there is an adv

[Mortality results in SENTIERI Project].

SENTIERI Project (Mortality study of residents in Italian polluted sites) studies mortality of residents in 44 sites of national interest for environmental remediation (Italian polluted sites, IPS). The epidemiological evidence of the causal association between causes of death and exposures was a priori classified into one of these three categories: Sufficient (S), Limited (L) and Inadequate (I). In these sites various environmental exposures are present. Asbestos (or asbestiform fibres as in Biancavilla) has been the motivation for defining six sites as IPSs (Balangero, Emarese, Casale Monfer

Reforming early intervention for premature infants: insights into integrated nursing and medical care in Western China.

BACKGROUND: Premature births has imposed substantial burdens on medical resources. Consequently, a specialized team was established and a model focused on early intervention, namely the Delivery Room Intensive Care Unit (DICU) emphasizing "care, support, and treatment" was introduced and its impact on the morbidity and mortality outcomes of newborns was assessed. Additionally, we aimed to develop a nomogram model for predicting the risk of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in preterm infants. METHODS: A retrospective study involving 2,788 infants was conducted to compare the characteristics a

Long-term outcomes following antenatal exposure to low-dose aspirin: study protocol for the 4-year follow-up of the APRIL randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: The use of low-dose aspirin by pregnant women to prevent preterm pre-eclampsia is gradually increasing. The administration of aspirin during pregnancy improves perinatal outcome, which could translate into improved child outcome in the long term. However, antenatal exposure to aspirin could have adverse effects on child development that may manifest later in life. The aim of this follow-up study is to assess the long-term effects of antenatal exposure to low-dose aspirin compared with placebo on survival, (neuro)development, behaviour and general health at 4 years corrected age.

The burden and management of neonatal jaundice in Nigeria: A scoping review of the literature.

Neonatal jaundice is a leading cause of hospitalization in the first week of life worldwide. If inappropriately managed, it may result in significant bilirubin-induced mortality and disability. We set out to describe the epidemiology of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia as well as the practices and challenges in the care of infants with significant neonatal hyperbilirubinemia (SNH) in Nigeria, as basis for policy intervention and research priorities. We systematically searched PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, WHO Library Database, African Index Medicu

Interventions to address maternal and childhood undernutrition: current evidence.

The global burden of undernutrition remains high with little evidence of change in many countries. We reviewed the evidence of the potential nutritional interventions and estimated their effect on nutrition-related outcomes of women and children. Among the maternal interventions, daily iron supplementation results in a 69% reduction in incidence of anemia, 20% in incidence of low birthweight (LBW) and improves mean birthweight. MMN supplementation during pregnancy has been shown to significantly decrease the number of LBW infants by 14% and small for gestational age (SGA) by 13%. Balanced prot

[What is the cost of neonatal respiratory distress for the Brazilian Unified National Health System? A national analysis of direct costs, regional distribution, and temporal variation].

Neonatal respiratory distress syndrome shows high clinical severity and economic burden for the Brazilian Unified National Health System. This study estimated the direct costs of hospitalizations from 2018 to 2021 and described their distribution by diagnosis, region, and period. A cost-of-disease study with a top-down approach and authorizations for hospitalization of newborns aged from 0 to 27 days was carried out. Values were updated to December 2025 and standardized per 1,000 live births. The period included 1,449,694 neonatal hospitalizations, of which 227,130 (15.7%) were due to respirat

TRIP10 as a Key Regulator in Fetal Growth Restriction: a Study Integrating Bioinformatics Screening with Experimental Validation.

Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is a leading cause of perinatal mortality, yet its molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study integrated bioinformatic analysis with experimental validation to identify key genes involved in FGR pathogenesis. Transcriptome datasets GSE114691 and GSE24129 from the GEO database were analyzed, revealing 5,788 differentially expressed genes (1,450 upregulated, 4,338 downregulated) between FGR and control placental samples. Functional enrichment analysis indicated that downregulated genes were primarily involved in mitochondrial function, aerobic respir…

METTL14 promotes trophoblast dysfunction by elevating SZRD1 expression in an m6A-dependent manner.

Preeclampsia, a common hypertensive pregnancy disorder associated with shallow trophoblast invasion, is a leading cause of perinatal and maternal mortality worldwide. Many studies have indicated that genes are differentially expressed between normal and diseased states. This study found that SUZ RNA binding domain containing 1 (SZRD1) expression was increased in placenta from preeclamptic pregnancies. However, the role and mechanism of SZRD1 in patients with preeclampsia are unclear. Gene expression was determined by RT-qPCR and Western blot. Cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration, invasion,

Optimal management of pregnancies presenting with membrane prolapse.

INTRODUCTION: Membrane prolapse represents a severe manifestation of cervical insufficiency, occurring in 0.3-1.0 % of pregnancies and posing significant risks for extreme prematurity and perinatal mortality. Despite decades of clinical experience, optimal management remains controversial. CONTENT: This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of membrane prolapse. We examine biomechanical and inflammatory mechanisms, diagnostic criteria, including cervical length assessment and amniocentesis, as well as therapeutic strategies, such as emerge…
