A descriptive study of first presentation psychosis in old age.

OBJECTIVE: This report describes the characteristics of a sample of elderly subjects presenting with their first episode of psychosis in old age. METHOD: Forty-six (38 females and eight males) patients were assessed on a variety of cognitive, psychopathological and personality measures. RESULTS: Female preponderance, social isolation and early cognitive deficits were findings of this study which have been replicated by other studies of late-onset psychosis. In contrast, hearing loss was not overly represented in this sample. Personality style differed significantly from accepted norms of adu

Problem-focused coping and satisfaction with activities of daily living in individuals with muscular dystrophy and postpolio syndrome.

The problems, problem-focused coping and satisfaction with activities of daily living in a total of 119 persons with muscular weakness are described. The study encompasses three groups: 33 persons with various types of muscular dystrophy, 46 with myotonic dystrophy and 40 with symptoms relating to the post-polio syndrome. A self-report instrument for Assessment of Problem-focused Coping (APC) was used. Most of the problems reported were connected with mobility and transportation and work, but the subjects used problem-focused coping relatively infrequently and few differences were found betwee

Personality characteristics of treatment-seeking HIV+ pregnant drug dependent women.

Pregnant, drug dependent women present for treatment with a variety of medical and psychosocial issues. When medical sequelae include HIV infection, effective medical and psychosocial management is essential for both mother and fetus/infant. To better understand and characterize this high-risk population, the present study examined personality features and psychopathology in a sample of HIV+, pregnant, drug dependent women. Personality was assessed using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory--Revised (MMPI-2). The mean MMPI-2 codetype, (6-8), although relatively rare in standard drug

Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory correlates of panic disorder with agoraphobia: changes with treatment.

Forty-seven patients meeting DSM-III-R criteria for panic disorder with agoraphobia (PAG) were assessed by the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) at baseline and after 8 weeks of treatment with imipramine, clomipramine and placebo. At pre-treatment patients had higher MMPI scores than the local normative data, the highest scores being for depression, hypochondria and hysteria. At week 8 the scores of most MMPI scales were significantly reduced. In addition, patients who showed clinical improvement had pre- and post-treatment scores lower than the unimproved patients. The result

Video-based education is non-inferior to in-person education in patients undergoing arthroscopic partial meniscectomy: a non-inferiority randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Reduced self-efficacy and high kinesiophobia levels affect recovery after arthroscopic partial meniscectomy. Video-based patient education represents an alternative approach to in-person education to support postoperative management and home-based rehabilitation in these patients. The study investigated whether preoperative video-based patient education was non-inferior to postoperative in-person education on pain-related self-efficacy and assessed the effects of such an approach on disability and fear of movement in patients undergoing arthroscopic partial meniscectomy. METHODS

Habenula volume alterations in adults born very preterm.

Preterm birth is a major risk factor for childhood psychopathology, including higher rates of anxiety and avoidant personality traits persisting into adulthood. While extensive research has documented volumetric reductions in various brain structures associated with emotional processing in preterm individuals, the habenula, a key component in affective and reward processing, has not yet been studied in this context. This study examines whether adults born very preterm show alterations in the habenula volume and whether these alterations are linked to higher anxiety, depression and avoidant per

Impact of type D personality on bilevel positive airway pressure compliance and side-effects in sleep apnoea patients.

BACKGROUND: Type D personality, characterised by social inhibition and negative affectivity, has been linked to lower compliance with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and mandibular advancement device treatment, and increased side-effects in obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) patients. Bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP) is often prescribed as an alternative when CPAP is poorly tolerated. However, the influence of type D personality on BiPAP compliance and related side-effects has not been studied. Regarding overall treatment success, mean disease alleviation (MDA) must also be cons

Offending and clinical characteristics of adults with autism spectrum disorder: Experience at forensic psychiatry center in Türkiye between 2012 and 2022.

The forensic and clinical need for better understanding of criminal offending in adults with ASD is increasingly recognized. To date, few studies have examined the differences and similarities between criminal offenders with and without ASD with respect to demographics, offending profiles, and clinical characteristics. This study, conducted in Turkey, is the first to conduct such as comparison using a national database of forensic files. Computerized search of the forensic records of 11,853 adults assessed between January 1, 2012, and January 1, 2022, for criminal responsibility by the Turkish

Risk factors for scabies in hospital: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Annually, 175.4 million people are infected with scabies worldwide. Although parasitic infections are important nosocomial infections, they are unrecognized compared to bacterial, fungal, and viral infections. In particular, nonspecific cutaneous manifestations of scabies lead to delayed diagnosis and frequent nosocomial transmission. Hospital-based studies on the risk factors for scabies have yet to be systematically reviewed. METHODS: The study followed the PRISMA guidelines and was prospectively registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023363278). Literature searches were conducted in thre

Impact of mental health and personality traits on the incidence of chronic cough in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

BACKGROUND: Chronic cough is a common troublesome condition, but risk factors for developing chronic cough are poorly understood. The aim of this study was to understand the relationship between mental health disorders, personality traits and chronic cough. METHODS: The Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging is a prospective, nationally generalisable, random sample of adults aged 45-85 years at baseline recruited between 2011 and 2015, and followed-up 3 years later. Chronic cough was defined as a daily cough over the last 12 months. Incident chronic cough was defined as those participants who r

Primary, Recall, and Decay Kinetics of SARS-CoV-2 Vaccine Antibody Responses.

Studies of two SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccines suggested that they yield ∼95% protection from symptomatic infection at least short-term, but important clinical questions remain. It is unclear how vaccine-induced antibody levels quantitatively compare to the wide spectrum induced by natural SARS-CoV-2 infection. Vaccine response kinetics and magnitudes in persons with prior COVID-19 compared to virus-naı̈ve persons are not well-defined. The relative stability of vaccine-induced versus infection-induced antibody levels is unclear. We addressed these issues with longitudinal assessments of vaccinees wit

Within-person increase in pathological worry predicts future depletion of unique executive functioning domains.

BACKGROUND: Affective neuroscience and scar theories propose that increased excessive worry, the hallmark symptom of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), predicts future declines in executive functioning (EF). However, the preponderance of cross-sectional designs used to examine between-person chronic worry-EF relationships has blocked progress on understanding their potentially causal within-person associations. Accordingly, this study used bivariate dual latent change score (LCS) models to test whether within-person increased GAD severity might relate to future reduced EF. METHODS: Community
