Susceptibility of Yellow Clingstone Peach Cultivars to Inking Disorder.

Inking disorder is a peach quality defect in which fruits manifest a dark epidermis discoloration; this disorder reduces the commercial value of peach fruits. In red pigmented peach fruit, it has been proposed that inking is associated with mechanical damage and reactions involving metal ions (Fe, Cu, and Zn) and anthocyanins, but in yellow peach cultivars inking mechanism is unknown. The objective of the present investigation was to evaluate the effect of mechanical damage and contamination with Fe metal ions in the development of inking disorder in three yellow peach cultivars. The present s

Curcumin Attenuates Aroclor 1254-Induced Oxidative, Genotoxic, and Apoptotic Alterations in HepG2 Cells.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), particularly Aroclor 1254 (A1254), are persistent environmental contaminants with hepatotoxic, genotoxic, and pro-oxidant properties. The liver, as the main organ for xenobiotic metabolism, is highly vulnerable to PCB-induced oxidative stress and DNA damage. Curcumin, a polyphenolic compound from Curcuma longa, exhibits potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective effects. This study investigated the oxidative, genotoxic, apoptotic, and mutagenic effects of A1254 in HepG2 cells and evaluated curcumin's protective potential. Cells were exposed to s

"Identification of curcumin and pyrazole as potential inhibitors of Klebsiella pneumoniae S-ribosylhomocysteinase (LuxS): An integrated computational and experimental approach".

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) represents a significant global threat to public health. Its ability to form robust biofilms controlled by quorum-sensing (QS) mechanisms and their ability to acquire new virulence factors and resistance mechanisms leads to urgent need for the development of new antimicrobial strategies and discovering novel therapeutic targets like S-ribosylhomocysteinase (LuxS). The enzyme LuxS is critical for autoinducer-2 (AI-2) generation which functions as a main signaling molecule between interspecies and intraspecies communication through

Mitigating copper toxicity in Carthamus tinctorius L. through 6-benzylaminopurine during seed germination and vegetative growth.

Cytokinins are essential regulators of plant growth and development and are actively involved in plant responses to both biotic and abiotic stresses. In the present study, the role of 6-Benzylaminopurine (BAP) in modulating growth performance and copper (Cu) tolerance in Carthamus tinctorius L. was examined. Treatments consisted of four CuSO4 levels and three BAP levels in a factorial design. High Cu levels significantly reduced seed germination parameters, growth characteristics, photosynthetic pigments, root and shoot protein content, and peroxidase (POX) activity, while increasing soluble c

Oxygen-driven shift from Pb(II) lattice incorporation to reversible surface complexation: Exploiting hydrothermal sludge DOM for high-purity vivianite recovery.

Recovering phosphorus from sewage sludge hydrolysate via vivianite crystallization is a promising route for resource recovery, yet Pb(II) enrichment can undermine product purity and stability. Here we reveal a ligand-directed mechanism by which sludge dissolved organic matter (DOM) regulates Pb(II) partitioning between mineral lattices and interfacial complexes. Increasing the hydrothermal temperature to 220 °C promoted the transformation of DOM toward oxygen-rich aromatic components, including highly oxidized carboxyl-rich alicyclic molecules and polyphenolic species, which preferentially bin

Successional dynamics of microbial communities and remediation of petroleum-contaminated soils during pilot-scale bioaugmentation.

Petroleum-contaminated soils pose serious global ecological and health risks. This pilot-scale study (120 days, 25 m2) aimed to evaluate the field efficacy of a compound microbial agent, ECT (composed of Ralstonia sp. CP, Rhizobium sp. BX, and Acinetobacter sp. FL), for bioaugmented remediation of heavily petroleum-polluted soil (initial TPH: 45,178 mg kg-1). ECT achieved an excellent TPH removal rate of 91.61%, with exogenous strains successfully colonizing the soil and maintaining high relative abundances (Ralstonia 42.1%, Rhizobium 10.0%, Acinetobacter 12.3% at day 120). High-throughput seq

Mass Spectrometric Footprinting and DFT Calculations Explain the Effect of Curcumin on the Aggregation of Amyloid β 42 (Aβ42).

Curcumin, a polyphenolic natural product, binds to Aβ42, a protein involved in Alzheimer's Disease, to inhibit self-aggregation in vitro. Molecular understanding of the binding is important in designing new molecules to inhibit Aβ42 aggregation. We performed OH radical footprinting of Aβ42 in the presence and absence of curcumin by using fast photochemical oxidation of proteins (FPOP), followed by mass spectral analysis, to monitor changes in Aβ42 protein dynamics in the presence of curcumin. The results reveal that curcumin binding reduces oxidative footprinting at the N-terminus and middle r

Flavonoids and polycystic ovary syndrome.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a heterogeneous endocrine disorder affecting women, characterized by irregular menstrual cycles, elevated androgen levels, and ovulatory dysfunction. Current clinical treatments, such as combined oral contraceptive pills (COCP), metformin, and clomiphene, can alleviate symptoms but are often associated with adverse effects including gastrointestinal discomfort, the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), and potential deterioration of cardiometabolic indices. Thus, there is an urgent need for safer and well-tolerated alternative therapies. Flavonoi

Electrodeposited Janus collagen membrane with tunable barrier protection, controlled degradation, and synergistic immunomodulation for bone regeneration in complex defects.

Bone regeneration in complex pathological environments (e.g., infection or diabetes) is particularly challenging. Traditional collagen barrier membranes often degrade quickly and lack multifunctional bioactivity, limiting their effectiveness under such conditions. Here, we describe a collagen-based Janus membrane for advanced guided bone regeneration in these challenging settings. The membrane features an asymmetric bilayer architecture: the soft-tissue side comprises a dense barrier layer formed by electrodeposition, whereas the bone-defect side consists of a porous repair layer. The repair l

Blood-Coagulation-Inspired Dual-Network Hydrogel with Delayed In Situ Gelation for Enhancing Intradiscal Diffusion and Promoting Intervertebral Disc Degeneration Repair.

Injectable hydrogels offer a promising strategy for treating intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD), a leading cause of chronic low back pain. However, effective intradiscal diffusion and timely in situ gelation remain challenging within the confined high-pressure nucleus pulposus. Inspired by the temporal regulation of blood coagulation, we developed a biomimetic dual-network hydrogel (named HAD-HPTC) that achieves time-programmed diffusion and delayed solidification to enhance delivery and retention. Upon injection, an initial physical network, formed through dynamic hydrogen bonding and co

Postbiotics and the gut-brain axis: A mechanistic review on modulating neuroinflammation and cognitive aging.

Aging triggers gut microbiota dysbiosis that disrupts the gut-brain axis (GBA), promoting neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration. Elderly exhibit reduced microbial diversity, depleted beneficial bacteria, and expanded pathobionts, elevating neurotoxic metabolites-lipopolysaccharides (LPS), trimethylamine-N-oxide, kynurenine derivatives, and secondary bile acids. These drive "inflammaging," blood-brain barrier breakdown, microglial activation, mitochondrial impairment, and proteinopathies in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Conversely, neuroprotective metabolites from commensals-short-chai

Rosmarinic Acid Ameliorates Obesity-Associated Metabolic Disturbances and Hepatic Steatosis in Mice with High-Fat Diet-Induced Obesity.

Obesity and obesity-associated hepatic steatosis represent major metabolic health challenges, yet effective pharmacological interventions remain limited. Rosmarinic acid (RA), a natural polyphenol, has been reported to exert anti-obesity effects; however, its specific roles in restoring hepatic lipid homeostasis and modulating glucose metabolism under diet-induced obesity remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the metabolic effects and underlying mechanisms of RA in mice with high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity. RA significantly reduced body weight gain and adipose tissue mass without

EGCG inactivates tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFα) by inducing its higher-order assembly.

BACKGROUND: Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFα) is an important therapeutic target for treating a range of inflammatory and autoimmune disorders. The TNFα trimer functions by interacting with its receptors (TNFRs) on the immune cell surface and triggers downstream intracellular signaling. (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is the primary bioactive polyphenol compound in green tea. Our previous study found that EGCG can inhibit TNFα activity; however, the underlying molecular mechanism remains unclear. PURPOSE: In this study, we investigated the interaction between EGCG and TNFα to elucidate
