An asymptotic approximation to the N-mixture model for the estimation of disease prevalence.

N-mixture models are probability models that estimate abundance using replicate observed counts while accounting for imperfect detection. In this article, we propose an asymptotic approximation to the N-mixture model which efficiently estimates large abundances without the computational limitations of the generalized N-mixture model introduced by Dail and Madsen in 2011. It has been suggested in the literature that N-mixture models do not perform well when counts from the same sites show weak patterns of population dynamics. Our proposed model addresses this issue by using the asymptotic infor

Application of landscape epidemiology to assess potential public health risk due to poor sanitation.

Clear identification of areas vulnerable to waterborne diseases is essential for protecting community health. This is particularly important in developing countries where unsafe disposal of domestic wastewater and limited potable water supply pose potential public health risks. However, data paucity can be a compounding issue. Under these circumstances, landscape epidemiology can be applied as a resource efficient approach for mapping potential disease risk areas associated with poor sanitation. However, in order to realise the full potential offered by this approach, an in-depth understanding

Bovine leptospirosis in urban and peri-urban dairy farming in low-income countries: a "One Health" issue?

Global trends in urbanization are increasing the spread of neglected zoonotic infections such as leptospirosis, and reducing the number of human cases of leptospirosis is best accomplished by controlling the infection in the animal reservoir. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of Leptospira borgpetersenii serovar Hardjo and L. interrogans serovar Hardjo (L. Hardjo) exposure and to assess the associated risk factors for infection in small-scale dairy farming in the urban and peri-urban area of Dushanbe, Tajikistan. The true individual seroprevalence among the dairy cows w

Factors associated with cholera in Kenya, 2008-2013.

INTRODUCTION: Kenya experienced widespread cholera outbreaks in 1997-1999 and 2007-2010. The re-emergence of cholera in Kenya in 2015 indicates that cholera remains a public health threat. Understanding past outbreaks is important for preventing future outbreaks. This study investigated the relationship between cholera occurrence in Kenya and various environmental and demographic factors related to water, sanitation, socio-economic status, education, urbanization and availability of health facilities during the time period 2008-2013. METHODS: The primary outcome analyzed was the number of cho

A tale of two communities: intestinal polyparasitism among Orang Asli and Malay communities in rural Terengganu, Malaysia.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) are still major health problems in many developing countries including Malaysia, particularly in the poor and socioeconomically deprived rural and remote communities in Peninsular Malaysia. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of IPIs and to identify the key factors associated with intestinal polyparasitism as well as to evaluate the knowledge, attitude and practices (KAP) on IPIs among rural Orang Asli and Malay communities in Terengganu, Malaysia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 340 participants (165 Ora

Adult congenital heart disease: A paradigm of epidemiological change.

Increasing survival rates for patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) represent a major achievement of modern medicine. Despite incredible progress been made in diagnosis, follow-up, early treatment and management in adulthood, many patients are faced with long-term complications, such as arrhythmia, thromboembolism, heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, endocarditis and/or the need for reoperation. In parallel, half of the patients are female, most of childbearing age, and, thus warrant specialist reproductive counseling and appropriate obstetric care. It is not surprising therefore, th

Winning the battle against the scourge of poliomyelitis in the African Region.

INTRODUCTION: Recently we have recorded some progress against the transmission of poliovirus in the African Region. This is attributable to a number of factors, including commitment of global partnerships against polio, improvement of existing strategies as well as a number of innovations in response to the disease in the Region. METHODS: The WHO Regional Office in Africa documented these practices that led to the noticeable progress in the polio eradication initiative in the African Region, as lessons learnt and as part of polio legacy planning. The documentation exercise covered eight count

Echinococcus multilocularis: Epidemiology, surveillance and state-of-the-art diagnostics from a veterinary public health perspective.

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE), caused by the larval (metacestode) stage of Echinococcus multilocularis, is considered one of the most serious parasitic zoonoses in Central and Eastern Europe and is emerging also in large parts of Asia and in North America. The red fox represents the main definitive host of E. multilocularis in Europe, but the raccoon dog, the domestic dog and to a much lesser extent the domestic cat also represent potential definitive hosts. The natural intermediate hosts of E. multilocularis are mainly voles. The spectrum of accidental hosts is broad and includes many species

Health impact assessment of cyclone Bejisa in Reunion Island (France) using syndromic surveillance.

INTRODUCTION: On January 2, 2014, Cyclone Bejisa struck Reunion Island (France). This storm led to major material damages, such as power outages, disturbance of drinking water systems, road closures, and the evacuation of residents. In this context, the Regional Office of French Institute for Public Health Surveillance in Indian Ocean (Cire OI) set up an epidemiological surveillance in order to describe short-term health effects of the cyclone. METHODS: The assessment of the health impact was based mainly on a syndromic surveillance system, including the activity of all emergency departments

[Neurologic diseases in a rural tropical area: experience at a primary health care center in the Boeny region of Madagascar].

There is, to our knowledge, no study reporting the demand for health care related to neurological diseases in rural tropical areas of developing countries. Neurology is nonetheless more or less closely related to the priority health issues in these countries. Over a 6-week period, 626 patients were seen at the primary health center in the town of Madirovalo, Madagascar. Neurological disorders accounted for 11.1% of the consultations. The neurological disorders most frequently leading to consultations were headaches (42.7%), with primary headaches accounting for 16%; next came leprosy neuropath

Incidence of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH): a 10-year follow-up study of a rural community in Japan.

BACKGROUND: The epidemiology and pathophysiology of iNPH remain unclear. We aimed to investigate the incidence of iNPH in elderly inhabitants of the community, and to identify how ventriculomegaly develops on brain MRIs and how symptoms develop in iNPH patients. METHODS: In 2000, 350 inhabitants, all 70-year-olds living in the community of Takahata in Japan, were asked to participate in a survey that included a questionnaire, physical examinations, cognitive screenings, and brain MRI studies. Using brain MRI as a screening, we defined having both Evans index of >0.3 and a narrow subarachnoid

Experiences with maternal and perinatal death reviews in the UK--the MBRRACE-UK programme.

Established in 1952, the programme of surveillance and Confidential Enquiries into Maternal Deaths in the UK is the longest running such programme worldwide. Although more recently instituted, surveillance and confidential enquiries into perinatal deaths are also now well established nationally. Recent changes to funding and commissioning of the Enquiries have enabled both a reinvigoration of the processes and improvements to the methodology with an increased frequency of future reporting. Close engagement with stakeholders and a regulator requirement for doctors to participate have both suppo

Decline in human dog-bite cases during a street dog sterilisation programme in Jaipur, India.

Human dog-bite injuries are a major public health problem, particularly where there are large populations of free-roaming or street dogs. Dog bites are also the major source of human rabies infections. There is little information on the means to reduce these injuries. Monthly human animal-bite injury records from January 2003 to June 2011 were obtained from the main government hospital in Jaipur, India. The data were analysed and compared with records of pregnancy in street dogs in Jaipur obtained from a street dog sterilisation programme. Human animal-bite injuries showed a seasonal pattern w

Mental disorders and mental health problems, active component, U.S. Armed Forces, 2000-2011.

Mental disorders account for significant morbidity, health care utilization, disability, and attrition from military service; the health care burden associated with mental disorders has increased over the last several years. During the years 2000 through 2011, 936,283 active component service members were diagnosed with at least one mental disorder. Annual counts and rates of incident diagnoses of mental disorders have increased by approximately 65 percent over the last twelve years; this overall increase is largely attributable to diagnoses of adjustment disorders, depressive and anxiety diso
