Epidemiology and etiology of brain cancer in Africa: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Cancer is a significant threat to public health and a leading cause of morbidity across the globe. Of all cancers, brain cancer can be particularly catastrophic as treatment often fails to achieve the desired degree of effectiveness and diagnosis remains associated with a high mortality rate. Africa, as a continent with resource-limited countries, needs to allocate the necessary proper healthcare infrastructure to significantly reduce cancer rates and improve patient survival. In addition, the relative paucity of data within this field in Africa makes effective management a challen

Potential causal effect of SLE on osteoporosis, and the mediation effect: a Mendelian randomisation study.

OBJECTIVE: This study uses Mendelian randomisation (MR) to investigate the causal link between SLE and osteoporosis across different ethnic groups. METHODS: Genetic variants associated with SLE were identified from publicly available genome-wide association studies in European and East Asian populations. Two-sample MR (TSMR) analysis and meta-analysis with inverse variance weighting (IVW) assessed their effects on bone mineral density (BMD) and fracture risk. Multivariable MR (MVMR) analysis in East Asians adjusted for potential mediators, and two-step mediation analysis evaluated mediation e

Hypertension Control Rates Before and After Implementation of a Multicomponent Quality Improvement Program in Medicare Beneficiaries Primarily of Hispanic Origin in a Large Health System in South Florida, 2011-2018.

Health care systems have a key role in improving hypertension control in large populations, a global challenge, through the implementation of modern multicomponent programs. The impact of such programs in at-risk minority populations, nonetheless, remains to be better characterized. Additionally, the extent to which hypertension control based on a single time-point blood pressure (BP) measurement (LAST-BP), the approach typically used in health system performance assessment, agrees with time-averaged BP (AVG-BP) has not been well studied. Leon Medical Centers (LMC), a major integrated health c

The burden of keratoconjunctivitis sicca in Nigeria: a scoping review of prevalence and risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Keratoconjunctivitis sicca, commonly known as Dry Eye Disease (DED), is a multifactorial disorder of the ocular surface characterised by tear film instability, ocular discomfort, and visual disturbance. The burden of DED has increased globally and is associated with several environmental, demographic, and ocular risk factors. Despite its growing public health importance, a comprehensive, nationally representative estimate of the prevalence and risk factors of DED in Nigeria is lacking, with existing evidence characterised by significant heterogeneity in study design, diagnostic cri

The Prevalence and Burden of Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction (DGBI) Before vs After the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: COVID-19 infection may increase the risk of developing disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI). However, the extent of this effect on a population level is poorly understood. We performed a 2-country survey to address this issue. METHODS: A population-based Internet survey with predefined demographic quotas was conducted across the United Kingdom (UK) and United States (U.S.) in 2017 (pre-pandemic; n = 4050) and repeated in 2023 (post-pandemic; n = 4002). The surveys included the Rome IV diagnostic questionnaire, and questions about nongastrointestinal somatic symptoms, a

Rapid reduction of maternal mortality in Uganda and Zambia through the saving mothers, giving life initiative: results of year 1 evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Achieving maternal mortality reduction as a development goal remains a major challenge in most low-resource countries. Saving Mothers, Giving Life (SMGL) is a multi-partner initiative designed to reduce maternal mortality rapidly in high mortality settings through community and facility evidence-based interventions and district-wide health systems strengthening that could reduce delays to appropriate obstetric care. METHODS: An evaluation employing multiple studies and data collection methods was used to compare baseline maternal outcomes to those during Year 1 in SMGL pilot distr

A Patient Simulation Framework for Risk Assessment of Conversational Health Care AI: Development and Evaluation Study.

BACKGROUND: Conversational AI systems are increasingly being deployed in health care for clinical decision support, but their performance varies substantially across patient communication styles, health literacy levels, and behavioral patterns. Static benchmarks cannot capture multiturn dynamics through which this variation compounds, and no current evaluation framework implements structured AI risk management guidance for conversational health care AI. The result is a structural risk: AI systems may perform well in aggregate while failing disproportionately for the populations they are intend

Cohort study to assess geographical variation in cholangiocarcinoma treatment in England.

BACKGROUND: Outcomes for cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) are extremely poor owing to the complexities in diagnosing and managing a rare disease with heterogenous sub-types. Beyond curative surgery, which is only an option for a minority of patients diagnosed at an early stage, few systemic therapy options are currently recommended to relieve symptoms and prolong life. Stent insertion to manage disease complications requires highly specialised expertise. Evidence is lacking as to how CCA patients are managed in a real-world setting and whether there is any variation in treatments received by CCA patie

Sport-based interventions for post-disaster mental health and psychosocial recovery: a multi-level systematic review and meta-analysis within the MHPSS framework.

Disasters and humanitarian crises affect both individual mental health and broader psychosocial functioning, but these outcome domains are not interchangeable. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined structured sport-, exercise-, play-, yoga/body-awareness-, physical-education-, and sport-for-protection-based interventions within a mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) framework. Web of Science Core Collection, PubMed, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar were searched for studies published from January 1, 2000, through November 1, 2025. Eligible populations wer

Prevalence of Osteoporosis and Osteopenia in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes at King Abdulaziz University Hospital: A Retrospective Analysis.

Introduction Osteoporosis mainly affects postmenopausal women and is characterized by decreasing bone mass and an increased risk of fracture. As populations age, it becomes more common and is frequently missed until fractures happen. Simultaneously, there is conflicting evidence about the relationship between bone health and diabetes, a chronic metabolic illness, with varying effects on the skeletal system. In light of the rising incidence of both disorders, this study examines the relationship between diabetes and osteoporosis/osteopenia in patients at King Abdulaziz University Hospital (KAUH

Operational Considerations for Using Deer-Targeted 4-Poster Tick Control Devices in a Tick-borne Disease Endemic Community.

CONTEXT: In the northeastern United States, recommendations to prevent diseases spread by black-legged ticks ( Ixodes scapularis ) and lone star ticks ( Amblyomma americanum ) often rely on individuals to use personal protection or yard-based strategies. The 4-Poster deer treatment stations (4-Posters) suppress tick populations by treating deer hosts with acaricide, potentially offering a community-wide approach for reducing tick-borne diseases in endemic areas. The 4-Poster deployment logistics in mainland community settings are not well documented but are needed for future public health tick

Tracking progress towards universal health coverage for essential health services in China, 2008-2018.

INTRODUCTION: We comprehensively evaluate whether the Chinese Government's goal of ensuring Universal Health Coverage for essential health services has been achieved. METHODS: We used data from the 2008, 2013 and 2018 National Health Services Survey to report on the coverage of a range of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) indicator 3.8.1. We created per capita household income deciles for urban and rural samples separately. We report time trends in coverage and the slope index (SII) and relative index (RII). RESULTS: Despite much lower levels of income and education, rural populations made

Risk factors for acute rheumatic fever: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) remain an inequitable cause of avoidable suffering and early death in many countries, including among Indigenous Māori and Pacific populations in New Zealand. There is a lack of robust evidence on interventions to prevent ARF. This study aimed to identify modifiable risk factors, with the goal of producing evidence to support policies and programs to decrease rates of ARF. METHODS: A case-control study was undertaken in New Zealand using hospitalised, first episode ARF cases meeting a standard case-definition. Populatio

Performance of Veterinary Services Pathway evolution and One Health aspects.

Animals, and the health systems which ensure their protection, play a vital role in the security and economic and social well-being of humanity, and are therefore a key component of the One Health concept. For global and national health security, prevention is better than cure, and targeting 'risk at source' in animal populations is a vital strategy in safeguarding the planet from risks of emerging zoonoses and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Neglected zoonoses - such as rabies and brucellosis - continue to have a significant global impact on human health and are also best managed at their ani

Evaluation capacity building in community health using a learning-by-doing approach: project overview and study protocol.

OBJECTIVES: Evaluation capacity building (ECB) is pivotal in advancing the quality and impact of community health services. Despite the recognised value of evidence-informed practice, ECB among community health staff remains limited, and published ECB initiatives have rarely been rigorously evaluated. The Integrated and Community Health directorate of the Western Sydney Local Health District in NSW, Australia, serves an urban population of approximately 1.1 million people characterised by high levels of cultural, linguistic and socioeconomic diversity. An internal needs assessment conducted in

Mental Health Sequelae of Cardiac Events: A Comprehensive Review of Biological Mechanisms, Prevalence, and Interdisciplinary Care Approaches.

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of mortality worldwide, with postcardiac events such as myocardial infarction, acute coronary syndrome, and sudden cardiac arrest causing significant physiological trauma and psychological effects. This study explores the complex interplay between cardiac events and mental health disorders, focusing on the biological and psychological pathways that connect these conditions in at-risk populations. The acute stress response following a cardiac event involves the activation of the sympathetic nervous system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis,

Sexual trauma and interest in mobile health among women with mental illness in Ghana.

Sexual violence against vulnerable populations is common worldwide. Many survivors of sexual assault experience long-term mental health difficulties. This study evaluated sexual violence exposure among women with mental illness in Ghana and examined their readiness to engage in mobile health interventions. We surveyed 200 women receiving inpatient or outpatient treatment at a large psychiatric hospital. Survey results indicated that 41.0 % reported having experienced sexual violence in the past. Over two-thirds of respondents had a high probability of PTSD (68.4 %) and these proportions were h
