Integrated transcriptomic analysis and machine learning for characterizing diagnostic biomarkers and immune cell infiltration in fetal growth restriction.

BACKGROUND: Fetal growth restriction (FGR) occurs in 10% of pregnancies worldwide. Placenta dysfunction, as one of the most common causes of FGR, is associated with various poor perinatal outcomes. The main objectives of this study were to screen potential diagnostic biomarkers for FGR and to evaluate the function of immune cell infiltration in the process of FGR. METHODS: Firstly, differential expression genes (DEGs) were identified in two Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) datasets, and gene set enrichment analysis was performed. Diagnosis-related key genes were identified by using three machine

Advancing Rheumatology Care Through Machine Learning.

Rheumatologic diseases are marked by their complexity, involving immune-, metabolic- and mechanically mediated processes which can affect different organ systems. Despite a growing arsenal of targeted medications, many rheumatology patients fail to achieve full remission. Assessing disease activity remains challenging, as patients prioritize different symptoms and disease phenotypes vary. This is also reflected in clinical trials where the efficacy of drugs is not necessarily measured in an optimal way with the traditional outcome assessment. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has catalyzed a digita

Is Maximal or Usual Walking Speed from Large Scale Wrist Sensor Data Better at Predicting Dementia, Depression and Death?

Older people are at increased risk of many adverse health outcomes, including dementia and depression, that burden the global health system. This paper presents algorithms for the large-scale assessment of daily walking speeds. We hypothesize that (i) data from wrist-worn sensors can be used to assess walking speed accurately; and that (ii) maximal daily walking speed is a better predictor of health outcomes than usual daily walking speed. First, algorithms were developed and tested using data from 101 participants aged 19 to 91 (47 ± 18) years. Participants wore an AX3 accelerometer (Axivity,

SVM-RFE: selection and visualization of the most relevant features through non-linear kernels.

BACKGROUND: Support vector machines (SVM) are a powerful tool to analyze data with a number of predictors approximately equal or larger than the number of observations. However, originally, application of SVM to analyze biomedical data was limited because SVM was not designed to evaluate importance of predictor variables. Creating predictor models based on only the most relevant variables is essential in biomedical research. Currently, substantial work has been done to allow assessment of variable importance in SVM models but this work has focused on SVM implemented with linear kernels. The po

Prognostic implications of the high sensitivity C-reactive protein to albumin ratio for major cardiovascular adverse events in patients undergoing noncardiac surgery.

The prognostic significance of the C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratio (CAR) in patients undergoing noncardiac surgery has not been conclusively determined. This study aimed to investigate the correlation and predictive capacity of the CAR for major perioperative adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) in noncardiac surgical patients. Individuals who underwent noncardiac surgical procedures were identified within the perioperative medicine database (INSPIRE 1.1) and stratified into tertiles on the basis of the CAR. The associations between the CAR and the risk of MACEs (all-cause death, perioper

Development of predictive models for lymphedema by using blood tests and therapy data.

Lymphedema is a disease that refers to tissue swelling caused by an accumulation of protein-rich fluid that is usually drained through the lymphatic system. Detection of lymphedema is often based on expensive diagnoses such as bioimpedance spectroscopy, shear wave elastography, computed tomography, etc. In current machine learning models for lymphedema prediction, reliance on observable symptoms reported by patients introduces the possibility of errors in patient-input data. Moreover, these symptoms are often absent during the initial stages of lymphedema, creating challenges in its early dete
