Effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of general health checks in adults: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: General health checks (GHCs) are widely used for disease prevention, however, their clinical effectiveness, psychological impact, and economic value remain debated. This study systematically evaluated the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of GHCs in adults to update and expand upon existing reviews. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, CINAHL, SinoMed, CNKI, and WanFang from inception to July 1, 2025. Three reviewers independently screened titles and abstracts, and two reviewers assessed full-text eligibility, with disagreements resolved thro

Oral Health Status, Oral Hygiene, and Behavioural Factors Among Disadvantaged Children: A Cross-Sectional Comparison Between the Peruvian Amazon and Valencia, Spain.

Background/Objectives: Dental caries remains a major public health problem in childhood and disproportionately affects socioeconomically disadvantaged populations. Although toothbrushing and oral hygiene are commonly promoted as key preventive behaviours, their protective effect may be limited by structural factors such as access to dental care, fluoride exposure, and preventive services. This study aimed to compare dental caries experience, oral hygiene status, toothbrushing frequency, and sugar consumption among disadvantaged children from the Peruvian Amazon and Valencia, Spain, and to expl

Homesharing Programs: A Promising Resource to Prevent Homelessness Among Newly Unhoused or Housing Insecure Older Adults in the United States.

Older adults are increasingly becoming unhoused, yet homelessness and housing precarity among older adults are often invisible. Housing insecurity also disproportionately impacts communities of color and women due to decades of exclusion from home ownership and wealth inequities. Many policies addressing homelessness tend to employ a crisis-centered approach, silo health and housing and offer few culturally responsive options for an increasingly diverse clientele. This commentary argues that nonprofit homesharing programs provide an undervalued and underused upstream tool that could potentiall

Incidence of Late-Onset Psoriasis Following Tonsillectomy: A Longitudinal Follow-Up Study Using a National Health Screening Cohort.

Tonsillectomy has been suggested as a potential intervention to resolve psoriasis; however, its preventive effects on the development of psoriasis remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the risk of developing late-onset psoriasis among a Korean adult population who had undergone tonsillectomy. Data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort between 2002 and 2019 were utilized. Out of a total of 514,866 participants, 1082 participants aged 40 years or older who had undergone tonsillectomy were matched with 4328 control participants using overlap weighting

The Association between Statin Use and Reduced Migraine Likelihood: A Comprehensive Analysis of Migraine Subtypes and Statin Types in a Nationwide Korean Cohort.

Despite growing interest in the preventive effects of statins, as lipid-lowering agents, on migraine attacks, comprehensive nationwide studies comparing migraine likelihood between statin users and controls are lacking. Our nested case-control study within the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort (2002-2019) investigated this association using 38,957 migraine patients and 155,828 controls, considering migraine subtypes (with/without aura) and statin types (lipophilic vs. hydrophilic). Using propensity score matching and adjusting for confounders, statin use was link

Nosocomial Outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 in a "Non-COVID-19" Hospital Ward: Virus Genome Sequencing as a Key Tool to Understand Cryptic Transmission.

Dissemination of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in healthcare institutions affects both patients and health-care workers (HCW), as well as the institutional capacity to provide essential health services. Here, we investigated an outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 in a "non-COVID-19" hospital ward unveiled by massive testing, which challenged the reconstruction of transmission chains. The contacts network during the 15-day period before the screening was investigated, and positive SARS-CoV-2 RNA samples were subjected to virus genome sequencing. Of the 245 tested individuals,

Shared decision making for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) with black transgender women.

Shared decision making is a collaborative process intended to develop a treatment plan that considers both the patient's preferences and the health provider's medical recommendations. It is one approach to reducing healthcare disparities by improving patient-provider communication and subsequent health outcomes. This study examines shared decision making about HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) with Black transgender women in Chicago, Illinois, USA, given high prevalence of HIV and disparities in PrEP use. Black transgender women were recruited online and in-person to participate in semi-stru

The Effect of Socioeconomic Status on All-Cause Maternal Mortality: A Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study.

Improving maternal health is one of the 13 targets of Sustainable Development Goal 3; consequently, preventing maternal death, which usually occurs in women's prime productive years, is an important issue that needs to be addressed immediately. This study examines the association between socioeconomic status and all-cause maternal mortality in South Korea and provides evidence of preventable risk factors for maternal death. For this population-based retrospective cohort study, data on 3,334,663 nulliparous women were extracted from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database between

How to get and get rid of gonorrhea.

Gonorrhea remains as a significant public health concern with an estimated 88 million new cases per year globally. Gonorrhea is a disease of sexual networks and is most prevalent in youth, men who have sex with men, and the socioeconomically disadvantaged. Highly adaptive through years of co-evolution, gonorrhea has developed multiple ways of evading the human immune system. Although new molecular-based strategies have opened avenues for less invasive testing, education and accessibility issues persist. Novel strategies, including use of the internet and social media, are required to better ta

Comparisons of prevention programs for homeless youth.

There are six HIV prevention programs for homeless youth whose efficacy has been or is currently being evaluated: STRIVE, the Community Reinforcement Approach, Strengths-Based Case Management, Ecologically-Based Family Therapy, Street Smart, and AESOP (street outreach access to resources). Programs vary in their underlying framework and theoretical models for understanding homelessness. All programs presume that the youths' families lack the ability to support their adolescent child. Some programs deemphasize family involvement while others focus on rebuilding connections among family members.

Control of trachoma and prevention of blindness in rural communities in Burma.

Trachoma was identified as the single most important cause of blindness in central Burma in a study carried out in 1961-1962. Control measures started in 1964 considerably reduced the degree of endemicity and severity of the disease in the areas treated. According to recent simplified criteria of evaluation, the prevalence of active trachoma has been reduced by more than 60% and that of active inflammatory disease of moderate and severe intensity from 7.4% to 1.8% of the active cases. A reduction in the risk of becoming infected is evident from changes that have occurred among the younger age

Preventive measures for falls and fractures in the community.

Falls and fractures, are a major public health concern among older adults in the UK, often resulting in injury, loss of independence and increased demands on health and social care services. The causes of falls are multifactorial such as muscle weakness, poor balance, visual impairment, polypharmacy, frailty and comorbidities, as well as environmental hazards. Osteoporosis further increases the risk and severity of fragility fractures, particularly in the spine, wrist and hip. Evidence demonstrates that community-based interventions can significantly reduce falls and associated injuries. These

Resignifying the sickle cell gene: Narratives of genetic risk, impairment and repair.

Connecting theoretical discussion with empirical qualitative work, this article examines how sickle cell became a site of public health intervention in terms of 'racialised' risks. Historically, sickle cell became socio-politically allied to ideas of repair, in terms of the state improving the health of a neglected ethnic minority population. Yet, we elucidate how partial improvements in care and education arose alongside preventative public health screening efforts. Using qualitative research based in the United Kingdom, we show how a focus on collective efforts of repair can lie in tension w
