Lactobacillus fermentum attenuates the alveolar bone loss in ligature-induced periodontitis in mice.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effects of Lactobacillus fermentum BELF11 on periodontitis in mice (LIP). METHODS: Sixty mice were randomly assigned to a control group (CTL), LIP/PBS group (LIP and PBS applied), or LIP/BELF11 group (LIP and L. fermentum BELF11 applied). For 14 days, PBS or L. fermentum BELF11 was applied twice daily to the mice in the LIP/PBS or LIP/BELF11 group, respectively. After 14 days, radiographic, histological, and pro-inflammatory cytokine assessments were conducted. RESULTS: The LIP/PBS and LIP/BELF11 groups demonstrated greater alveolar bone loss than the C

Bifidobacterium bifidum CCFM1163 Alleviated Cathartic Colon by Regulating the Intestinal Barrier and Restoring Enteric Nerves.

Cathartic colon (CC), a type of slow-transit constipation caused by the long-term use of stimulant laxatives, does not have a precise and effective treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the ability of Bifidobacterium bifidum CCFM1163 to relieve CC and to investigate its underlying mechanism. Male C57BL/6J mice were treated with senna extract for 8 weeks, followed by a 2-week treatment with B. bifidum CCFM1163. The results revealed that B. bifidum CCFM1163 effectively alleviated CC symptoms. The possible mechanism of B. bifidum CCFM1163 in relieving CC was analyzed by measuring the intestinal

Safety of Bifidobacterium breve, Bif195, employing a human exercise-induced intestinal permeability model: a randomised, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, parallel group trial.

We have previously shown that the probiotic Bifidobacterium breve strain Bif195 alleviates mucosal injury including ulcer formation in the upper intestine induced by non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Here, we report additional safety use of Bif195 in 126 healthy humans undergoing an exercise-induced intestinal permeability challenge in a double-blinded, placebo-controlled randomised 6-week intervention trial. Intestinal permeability was assessed by urinary lactulose/rhamnose (L/R) ratio. L/R ratio, plasma intestinal fatty acid binding protein (I-FABP) and gastrointestinal symptom r

Lactobacillus johnsonii 3-1 and Lactobacillus crispatus 7-4 promote the growth performance and ileum development and participate in lipid metabolism of broilers.

Long-term use of antibiotic growth promoter (AGP) in animal production is the main cause of antimicrobial resistance of pathogenic bacteria. Therefore, seeking alternatives to AGP is crucial for animal husbandry. Among all AGP alternatives, probiotics are promising candidates. In this study, two strains of lactic acid bacteria, L. johnsonii 3-1 and L. crispatus 7-4, were isolated from the feces of wild Gallus gallus, which exhibited obvious anti-pathogenic activity and improved the growth performance of broilers. Furthermore, we found that these two strains participated in the lipid metabolism…

Escherichia coli Shiga Toxins and Gut Microbiota Interactions.

Escherichia coli (EHEC) and Shigella dysenteriae serotype 1 are enterohemorrhagic bacteria that induce hemorrhagic colitis. This, in turn, may result in potentially lethal complications, such as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which is characterized by thrombocytopenia, acute renal failure, and neurological abnormalities. Both species of bacteria produce Shiga toxins (Stxs), a phage-encoded exotoxin inhibiting protein synthesis in host cells that are primarily responsible for bacterial virulence. Although most studies have focused on the pathogenic roles of Stxs as harmful substances capable

Lactoferrin Metal Saturation-Which Form Is the Best for Neonatal Nutrition?

We evaluated the impact of metal saturation of lactoferrin (with iron and manganese) on population numbers of pathogenic species relevant for neonatal sepsis that commonly originates from the gut due to bacterial translocation. Little attention has been paid to how metal ions bound to the protein affect its activity. Several reference and clinical strains as well as probiotic strains were incubated with different forms of lactoferrin: metal-depleted (apolactoferrin), iron-saturated (hololactoferrin) and manganese-saturated lactoferrin. We also attempted to confirm the observed effects of lacto

Future topical medications in chronic rhinosinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Research has progressed rapidly in recent decades to better understand the etiopathogenesis and management paradigms of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). Although oral antibiotics often mitigate symptoms in acute CRS exacerbations, eradication of polymicrobial biofilms and multidrug-resistant bacteria remains a challenge. The goal of this review is to summarize and discuss the potential and pitfalls of topical medications in the treatment of CRS. METHODS: A related literature review was performed using PubMed and Scopus, with only the English database included. RESULTS: The main ther

Nanocoatings for Chronic Wound Repair-Modulation of Microbial Colonization and Biofilm Formation.

Wound healing involves a complex interaction between immunity and other natural host processes, and to succeed it requires a well-defined cascade of events. Chronic wound infections can be mono- or polymicrobial but their major characteristic is their ability to develop a biofilm. A biofilm reduces the effectiveness of treatment and increases resistance. A biofilm is an ecosystem on its own, enabling the bacteria and the host to establish different social interactions, such as competition or cooperation. With an increasing incidence of chronic wounds and, implicitly, of chronic biofilm infecti

Rheumatic diseases and the microbiome.

Every human is intimately associated with a large and diverse population of microorganisms living on the skin and mucous membranes. These commensal organisms are known as the microbiome, or microbiota, and are acquired in young childhood. The microbiome is critically important in establishing a fully function immune system. For example, Th17 T helper cells are not present in a germ-free environment. The relationship of the microbiome to autoimmune disease is being explored actively. Mechanisms by which the microbiome may influence these diseases include, but are not limited to, molecular mimic

The use of direct-fed microbials to reduce shedding of Escherichia coli O157 in beef cattle: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Human illness due to infections with Escherichia coli O157 is a serious health concern. Infection occurs through direct contact with infected animals or their faeces, through contaminated food or water and/or through person-to-person transmission. A reduction in faecal E. coli O157 shedding in cattle might reduce the burden of human infections. We used systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the efficacy of direct-fed microbials (DFM), compared with placebo or no treatment, fed during the pre-harvest stage of production in reducing faecal E. coli O157 shedding in beef cattle during field
