Anxiolytic Effect of Citrus aurantium L. on Patients with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia.

The bone marrow aspiration procedure is used in hematological diseases and consists of a painful, invasive procedure causing anxiety-associated symptoms. The present study assessed the effect of Citrus aurantium L. essential oil on the treatment of anxiety, in the moment that precedes the collection of medullary material in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Volunteers from both sexes were divided into groups receiving either the C. aurantium essential oil through inhalation, diazepam (10 mg), or the placebo. The evaluation was performed through psychometric scales [State-Trait Anxi

[PSYCHOEDUCATIONAL PROGRAM AS A WAY OF CORRECTING MOTIVATIONAL COMPONENTS IN PATIENTS WITH PARANOID SCHIZOPHRENIA WITH ABDOMINAL OBESITY].

The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of motivational and targeted psychoeducational programs designed for patients with paranoid schizophrenia with abdominal obesity. We observed 34 women aged 18-42 with continuous-flow type paranoid schizophrenia. All patients had a concomitant abdominal obesity, which developed secondarily after long-term administration of second generation antipsychotic medications (at least 1 year). Based on clinical-psychopathological and psychometric methods of assessment and on the analysis of Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire we have developed modul

Single-day pain assessments as clinical outcomes: not so fast.

INTRODUCTION: Pain diaries are important tools for clinical trials and optimal assay sensitivity of outcomes derived from these diaries is a worthwhile goal. Jensen and colleagues recently reported results suggesting that single-day diary-based outcomes could possibly be as psychometrically sound as outcomes based on taking the average of many diaries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this paper, we attempted to replicate those results with several diary data sets. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: We come to a different conclusion than that advanced by Jensen and colleagues and conclude that their results w

Disability profile/clinician-rated: validity for Brazilian university students with social anxiety disorder.

Functional impairment scales are important to assess Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) patients. The present study aims to evaluate the reliability, internal consistency, validity and factorial structure of the Disability Profile/Clinician-Rate (DP) scale, as well as to present an interview-guide to support its application by clinicians. University students (n = 173) of both genders participated in the study (SAD = 84 and Non-SAD = 89), with ages ranging between 17 and 35 years, systematically diagnosed. The SAD group presented more difficulties when compared to the Non-SAD group. The DP presented

Atrial natriuretic peptide, arginine vasopressin peptide and cortisol serum levels in opiate-dependent patients.

Preclinical studies suggest that chronic drug abuse profoundly alters stress-responsive systems. The best studied of the stress-responsive systems in humans is the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Apart from cortisol, arginine vasopressin peptide (AVP), and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) are known to directly impact upon the HPA axis in addictive behavior. We investigated alterations in ANP, AVP and cortisol serum levels in opiate-dependent patients who received diacetylmorphine treatment within a structured opiate maintenance program. ANP serum levels were significantly increased

[Oral health related quality of life among Dutch forensic psychiatric patients].

In order to determine the effects ofa new approach to preventive oral health treatment for forensic psychiatric patients, 3 studies were carried out using a Dutch version of the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14-NL), among Dutch forensic psychiatric patients. In the first study, it was determined that the psychometric characteristics of the OHIP-14-NL were good and that attention to oral healthcare contributed positively to quality of life. The second study, which made use of an improved version of the OHIP-14-NL indicated that patients with a high level of anxiety for dental treatment an

Measuring stigma among health care and social service providers: The HIV/AIDS Provider Stigma Inventory.

Initial validation of the HIV/AIDS Provider Stigma Inventory (HAPSI), piloted on a sample of 174 nursing students, supported the psychometric qualities of a suite of measures capturing tendencies to stigmatize and discriminate against people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA). Derived from social psychology and mindfulness theories, separate scales addressing awareness, acceptance, and action were designed to include notions of labeling, stereotyping, outgrouping, and discriminating. These were enhanced to capture differences associated with personal characteristics of PLHA that trigger secondary sti

Polyunsaturated fatty acids deficits are associated with psychotic state and negative symptoms in patients with schizophrenia.

The study was aimed to examine membrane polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) profile in patients with schizophrenia (SZ) before and after antipsychotic medication and test their association with psychopathology. Erythrocyte membrane fatty acids were analysed by gas chromatography in 36 drug-free patients with SZ and 36 controls. Psychometric evaluation and blood sampling were achieved at baseline and after 3 months of antipsychotic treatment. At enrolment, levels of total PUFAs and arachidonic (AA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids were significantly lower, but ω6/ω3 PUFAs ratio was higher in pat

Mechanisms, diagnosis and management of hepatic encephalopathy.

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a serious neuropsychiatric complication of both acute and chronic liver disease. Symptoms of HE can include confusion, disorientation and poor coordination. A general consensus exists that the synergistic effects of excess ammonia and inflammation cause astrocyte swelling and cerebral edema; however, the precise molecular mechanisms that lead to these morphological changes in the brain are unclear. Cerebral edema occurs to some degree in all patients with HE, regardless of its grade, and could underlie the pathogenesis of this disorder. The different grades of HE

Cortical and subcortical sensory-motor impairment in patients with major depression: a preliminary analysis.

Assessment of patients with depression tends to focus on the psychiatric symptoms of the disorder to quantify distress, potential for suicide, and helps determine the appropriate course of treatment. However, research increasingly reveals comorbid organic and biological deficits in higher order cortical skills and subcortical processes which should be considered when assessing the depressed patient. The current study investigated the presence of cortical and subcortical sensory deficits in a group of 36 patients with Major Depressive Disorder as compared to a group of normal controls. The resu

Pilot study of the Sensory Over-Responsivity Scales: assessment and inventory.

This article describes 3 stages of construction of the Sensory Over-Responsivity (SensOR) Scales: instrument development, reliability and validity analyses, and cross-validation on a new sample. The SensOR Scales include the SensOR Assessment, an examiner-administered performance evaluation, and the SensOR Inventory, a caregiver self-rating scale. Both scales measure sensory overresponsivity in 7 sensory domains. Data were collected from 2 samples consisting of participants who were typically developing (ns = 60 and 44, respectively) and participants with sensory overresponsivity (ns = 65 and

Validation of a disease-specific quality-of-life questionnaire in a large sample of Dutch achalasia patients.

The aim of this study was to validate a translated version of an achalasia-specific quality-of-life questionnaire (achalasia-DSQoL) by examining its psychometric properties in a Dutch cohort of achalasia patients. The achalasia-DSQoL was administered to 171 treated achalasia patients together with a clinical symptom score and the RAND-36. Validation methods included factor analysis, known-group techniques, Cronbach's alpha and Spearman rank correlation with other questionnaires and feasibility. About 72.5% of the achalasia patients completed the questionnaires. The achalasia-DSQoL showed evide

[Psychosocial factors in psoriasis. A pilot study].

BACKGROUND: The successful treatment of patients with chronic plaque psoriasis depends not only on the method of therapy but also on psychosocial factors. METHODS AND RESULTS: A pilot study was performed on 22 patients with chronic plaque psoriasis. The psychosocial stress, psychiatric features and their changes were assessed over a 3-week inpatient rehabilitation stay in a specialty clinic. The severity of the psoriasis, the subjective degree of suffering and the psychometric variables related to psychosomatic symptoms were assessed before and at the end of the treatment. Repetitive behaviours in typically developing 2-year-olds.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive behaviours are an essential part of the diagnosis of autism but are also commonly seen in typically developing children. The current study investigated the frequency and factor structure of repetitive behaviours in a large community sample of 2-year-olds. METHODS: A new measure, the Repetitive Behaviour Questionnaire (RBQ-2) was completed by 679 parents. RESULTS: The RBQ-2 had good psychometric properties. A four-factor model provided the best fit for the data, accounting for 51% of the variance, and suggested 4 sub-scales: unusual sensory interests, repetitive motor m
